help with transmission

I have a 92 Tbird that has a great motor. My transmission doesn't want to go into the last gear when I am driving it. we had the fluid & filter changed but it hasnt helped. Is my car beyond hope or could it be something simple?

How is the body?
Has everything else been maintained as required?

Worst case, you may need the transmission removed and rebuilt. That's certaintly no crime for a fifteen year old car. Let's use the number $2000 as the price for the tranny rebuild. If you saw an identical car for sale, and the price was $2000 would you be tempted to buy it?

If you went out today and purchased a new car, in the $15,000 price range do you realize the "depreciation" is going to be $3000-$4000 just driving it off the lot?

Now all of that aside, exactly what does your transmission do? Does it simply not shift to the highest gear, which would be OD I believe so it simply gets to third and stays there? Or does it slip, which means it attempts to shift but the clutch being commanded on is worn out and cannot apply. The accompaning symptom is the engine starts to race when that shift is attempted.

What happens if you drive the car in "3" instead of drive?

What did the fluid look/smell like before it was changed? What does it look/smell like now?

Many people bail on a car like this way to early IMO. Properlly repaired you can very likely expect several more years of service from it, without a guaranteed monthly payment associated with a new car.

Sir, my car is not very pretty to look at anymore but I am very attached & it has the greatest motor. I want to get it fixed but I am afraid I cant afford it at this time.We are having a very hard time.
When you start to drive, it jerks into the first gear & just wants to rev after that. I havent tried it in the last gear but my husband said it was doing the same thing.It has all just started recently, within the last few days.
My husband said the fluid smelled burnt.
someone said it sounded like the modulator valve. Could that be the problem?

Hi all, It has been awhile and I still get questions about transmissions running dry on Honda mowers. I am on my second transmission (the first one burned up) and the mower has been running for 12 years now. Here is what I learned after cooking one transmission. 1) These 3-speed tranys use 10W30 as indicated above. Synthetic is fine. It might slip more. 2) the seals around the drive shaft leak after awhile so you will likely loose some fluid over time. 3) the fluid leaks out -especially- if you lean your mower up on its side to wash it after mowing. 4) These hold about 4 oz of fluid 5) If you drill a hole, drill one that is little higher up on the pan and easily accessable when you tip the mower up on its right side. (The same way you do oil changes) You can drill it lower if you have a plug you know will seal tightly. That can be useful because you can pull the plug and see if anything comes out prior to refilling. 6) I used a larger bit (1/2")which was probably too big but I found a silicone rubber plug that fits snug. (a washer/dryer foot)I dremeled a small recessed so when I twist it in, it seats itself and stays in place. It seals surprisingly well (no leaks) 7) I used a large syringe from a turkey deep fryer kit and injected oil in through the hole measuring ~ 4 oz.. So far so good. Hope this helps. Yes, if you have a gear which gives you the ground speed you want/need at full throttle, then the gear drive is perfect . . . . until you run into some heavier cutting and need to slow down a bit. On my old gear drive, I did that by slipping the clutch until I was through the heavy stuff and could again go at the ground speed to match the gear I was in . . . . or, you can shift to a lower gear and probably go slower than you really want, but no need to slip the clutch With a hydro, you set the engine for max torque and then you have infinitely variable gound speed to match whatever the operation you're doing calls for - A real time saver, plus you have maximum torque at the exact correct ground speed I wore out 3 different gear drive tractors, used about 90% of the time for mowing. Now that I have a good hydro and know what I would be missing, I wouldn't consider another gear drive and would hate to be forced into one because I was worried about breaking the transmission in it Kubota (and others) have been manufacturing small diesel (and gas) garden tractors designed for ground engaging work with hydro transmissions for more than 20 years and you don't find many threads here about any of those models with broken or ailing transmissions. True, they are more expensive than 'box store' lawn mowers, but I've ridden (and worn out) enough junk that when I go looking for a good machine, it's NOT at one of the box stores - I would rather buy a used tried and true macine with 1,000 hours on it than a new box store model . . . . for the same money If you have a fixed budget at say $2K or less to buy your 'lawn mower' and you are dead set on a new machine, then you do have a tough choice to make because no doubt the gear drive tractors in that price range are probably less prone to transmission failures than many of the hydros are - It's just another one of those 'you can pay me now or pay me later' deals Don

Thanks to those who replied. My husband reviewed our building plans and found that Quietrock was used as the sheetrock for the the second wall that was built between the units, which is also the 1-hour firewall. We guess that the architect thought that was sufficient soundproofing. My husband sent the drawings to another architect in our area who specifically works on soundproofing. That person replied, in part, that the new walls were not properly designed to achieve sound reduction between living units. He said, for example, "The code minimum for a wall between units is STC 50 and with the resonances you now most likely have less than that. Most modern condo owners will have an expectation of STC 65+ - in your case where your living room is right up against [the other unit's] bedroom, it would have to go up to STC 70 for people to go about their lives and habits without hearing each other." He referred us to the following page (which I skimmed but didn't understand) for why the design was inadequate. http://www.greengluecompany.com/understandingTripleLeaf.php He suggested that we would need to tear out the existing walls, including the newly-built firewall, and re-build them to properly address the resonance problem. We are hoping for a less extreme solution and are going to meet and discuss other possible remediation. (After all, what if we didn't own both units? Surely there must be a way to reduce sound transmission while working only from one side.) If anyone reading this is going to remodel and is interested in soundproofing, please consult with someone with specific expertise during your planning stages. It was a costly error for us not to realize that was necessary.

That trans is very similar to the K46. Yes many have had success with sanding out the scratches with good results. Jerking into first gear can be caused by a vacuum modulator valve that has lost it's vacuum signal. This can happen if the valve starts to leak, and the transmission fluid gets to the vacuum hose. The hose swells, gets soft and eventuakll falls off of the modulator. You should even see a vacuum hose all the way up at the engine that is soft, and has oil in it. While it will cause a very late shift into second gear and third gear, it actually would not prevent the transmission from shifting. But you risk over-revving the engine to find out. (You might have to go over 40mph to get second gear, just like a full throttle acceleration)

If you get this to a good shop, one that is experienced with your car they should be able to figure it out easily.
