Beyond Comprehension

At least it surely has to be.

New Jersey lawmakers have passed the "Right To Repair" bill though their house, and now it moves to their senate.

Read the details here.

http://www.pressofatlanticcity.com/186/story/298271.html

What people fail to grasp is, shops that are making the investments that are required to keep up with the technology are not experiencing the problems that this bill is alleged to be able to solve.

The people I know who are adept at seeing through these kinds of things see this as a parts bill, not a service one. Plus they feel the lawmakers will use this as a cash cow attempting to reap in fines from the manufacturers, for problems that are both real and imagined. The issue with that approach is, the manufacturers will need to recoup those losses, and the most likely way they will do that is higher fees for the service information to the shops, who will have to charge more for the services they provide to pay the higher information fees.

I don't think it ought to be legislated. I do think manufacturers ought to disclose trouble codes and build the vehicle with an on board means to read them. Bet it wouldn't cost 2 cents to give vehicles that capablity. No reason not to disclose that info at all other than hold an already paid for vehicle for ransom. jmo

So what. How many small shops know how to read the info?
How many know how to fix it without the proper equipment ?
Prime exp. I can give you the voltages of a H.O.T. of a T.V. or monitor. Now, do you know what to do with them ?
Do you know if the transister is bad ? Do you know if the emitter voltage is proper ? How about the base voltage ?
I know what it should be. Pay me and i'll tell you. the service shop only knows what they see. I might be missing
something but i think i made my point. Anyone opposed please chime in. I might have made mistakes. Maybe i read it wrong.

Amr...we've pretty much gone over the majority of it in a few posts. 1. Have your humidity tent/chamber/cover or how ever you plan on keeping the humidity up sky high around the plants already thought out and ready to go. 2. Have your soil mix ready in large enough quantity. Make sure if you are using a raw spaghnum peat mix to pre wet the peat. Make sure it has plenty of perlite and stuff to allow good drainage. 3. Have several containers of different sizes ready. 4. If you have multiple plants, have a 5 gallon bucket handy and fill with water some Super Thrive. Does Super Thrive and similar work? Don't really know but it makes ME feel better! 5. Working in the shade...unwrap plants carefully...putting each one in the 5 gallon bucket to help re-hydrate. I also mist the foliage with the hose. 6. Allow to soak for around 15 minutes or so...while you are gauging the size of containers to use for each plant and getting some soil into them. 7. Start potting up...shaking the pots to distribute the soil all throughout the root mass evenly. 8. Water well. 9. Trim off any dead or yellowed leaves. Cut back any dead areas. 10. Get them in the shade under your humidity contraption and leave them alone. I spray the gravel/ground around the plants to keep it wet and to build up even more humidity. I also mist the plants often. You want to avoid any major heat build up. Don't over water! If you are pumping enough humidity to them, you will not need to water too often. But don't assume that either. Keep checking the soil. I would leave under the plastic for a minumum of two weeks. If the plants are looking good and you even start seeing some evidence of flushing, you can start allowing more air to the plant...slowly removing some of the covering. Do this over a few days or so. Start getting some more light too. Watch the plants closely. If you are at all hesitant about the health of the plant, get it back under plastic. Start hitting them with some light foliar ferts. This is a slow process that tests your patience. So what are you ordering?? Remember to communicate with the guy. Good luck!! J

The markup on drugs in the US is crazy! I've talked to our pharmacists at work and am told that the markup is 50 cent to $1.00 per prescription, no matter what the stores cost is on it. We make our money off prescriptions with the dispensing fees, which each drugstore decides on its own. We seem to charge the highest dispensing fee per prescription (I think it's $12.50?), but you get what you pay for, pharmacists who truly care about your health. I constantly see them spend a lot of time with our patients talking about their health and medications and they work with the doctor to ensure the patient is getting the proper help. Someone in another thread was saying what they pay for Crestor. I price checked one 20mg Crestor pill and it was $1.30 per pill. A 30 day supply would be $39 (1 pill a day), + 50 cents, + $12.50. $52.00 a month. And odds are really good the patient has drug coverage through work (I pay $45 a month for extended benefits that cover prescription, dental and eye exams), and the prescription would be either free, or about $4 for the customer, give or take a little. I can't check the actual price in the Pharmacy computer as I'm not a technician and can't use those computers as I don't have access to them, and the privacy laws prevent me from going into them... ;)

Good quotes. anneliese, men never change. Ages and ages old, and it's still true: "How absurd men are! They never use the liberties they have, they demand those they do not have. They have freedom of thought, they demand freedom of speech." Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855)

Adenauer's quotes are very much the Adenauer I know as our first chancellor after WWII. Duerrenmatt sounds pessimistic, but has not time proven him right?

This is about legislation that is supposed to force the O.E's to provide tools and information to service today's cars, that is in reality a parts bill which will force a lot more of what is now considered proprietary information into the open market. That will allow this information to be shipped overseas, and cheaper knock-off parts will be produced which will further undermine the manufacturers.

One of the results will be to actually drive up new vehicle prices. That will need to be done to cover lost revenues from parts sales. I could go on for hours as far as the damage that will occur to the industry.

Now as far as your other questions if they were in fact aimed at me. Do you suppose my background in electronics, which starts with an Associates in Digital Electronics Engineering, with twenty five years of practical applicable experience places me in a position to exceed the level of competence with electronics that you are questioning?

BTW late this winter I will be including the first class of a nine part series in each region that I instruct (five regions now) for continuing education for professional technicians that will bring them all the way up to the level you are questioning, and then some.

Not seeing the parts issue from the info provided. All I see is talk about diagnostics.

From my point of view, if the manufacturer of anything considered durable goods won't provide the means for others to repair the thing once it's out of warranty in an attempt to keep me chained by the ankle to them forever, (and it becomes an issue sometime) they can keep their cr*p.
