Tub/Shower Combo

Unlike most folks today, I have one small bathroom in my house. It is so small, that to remodel, there are few if any choices beyond the same configuration it has today. This means a replacement for a tub/shower combo.

Does anyone have any recommendations, or links to sites for these kind of combo's ?

Rachel - there are lots of people in your same position including myself. Tub/shower combinations are great for space savings. We remodeled our hallway bathroom last year, we moved the plumbing around for better space savings but still replaced with a combo. See pic:

There are lots of ways to spruce up what could be a dull bathroom. Good luck.

I'm in the same boat with a long narrow galley type bathroom. I'm trying to decide whether to rip into walls and open it up or just remodel as is. There is the idea that it really is efficient with your space to combine tub and shower, plus would be $ saving as well and I'm always into that idea. Love seeing the pic of the combo (which looks great!) and would like to see other remodels of the same for inspiration.

I know I probably went overboard, but I have been searching Houzz for shower/tub combos for myself if I decide to go in that direction. Most of these pictures have Master Bath titles - they tend to be small houses or apartments in large cities where space is an issue. They all have a generous sized tub. A few have extra shower bling and even a separate tub filler. All of them have material choices and the level of tile work that you see in a master bathroom. I'm sure that if I searched Houzz I could find just as many, or even more, remodels of small master baths where they have just built a walk in shower. I think the decision to do a shower/tub may be a personal choice because they want a soaking tub - since they are titled Master I'm assuming the bath is not the only bath in the house and they could easily just go with a shower. Bond Kerdi to Tub for Tub/Shower combo???

once you install the cement board (so that it sits above the tub flange), fill in that channel with thinset, and let it harden. once hard, go ahead and install your Kerdi, so that it's sitting no more than 1/8" off the tub. Then you can seal it with Kerdi-fix. That's the "book" explanation. If it were me, I'd use the same color siliconized latex caulking as my grout and seal it with that. Reason being that then you wouldn't have to worry about the color of the Kerdi-fix sticking out from under the tile.

Are you looking for something that adds function or for looks? A small table next to the tub would hold a drink. Do people actually read in the tub? I once tried but logistically it seemed more difficult than relaxing with a book in bed.

@catbuilder - the short answer: sometimes my partner & I like to bathe together (and a spout in the back of the neck isn't comfortable.) Longer answer: I have another bathroom with a shower that I expect to use most often for showering. While I want the option of showering in this new, master bath, I anticipate taking baths in this tub more often than showering. Edited to add: a few other spout locations would would work fine for this purpose - I just thought centered on the back would look less weird than pushed back toward the corner of the shower head wall.

oops.. I should have clarified a bit.

Am looking for product recommendations, or product links to websites to look at tub/shower combos. As I look around, most product sites that I have visited, have only individual tubs and showers, but not combos.
pkirkal - love that you did small tile all the way around in the shower, I was thinking of doing the same...

Rachel, I think we're maybe confused (I am). Are you looking for a one-piece, all-in-one tub/shower/wall unit? Or a tub that is also a shower?

Most people seem to have the latter. That's the project I'm working on right now. Cast iron tub, tiled walls and shower/tub spout valve and trim.

I'm looking for a tub that is also a shower. Maybe I haven't been able to find what I want, because I'm not identifying it correctly !
And I should add that I have been assuming that a one piece unit was used more for new construction. Again with a very small bathroom (and an older home with small doorways) - I'm not sure how this could even be gotten into my house.

Rachel, I have small bathrooms too. We had a one-piece tub/shower unit in a mountain cabin; I hated it. It was miserable (actually impossible) to keep clean, and felt weird to sit or stand in. I would not have another one.

I saw some tub/shower all-in-ones at Home Depot recently. Be sure you see them in person and try them out before purchasing one. It may be quality of material that is the problem, there may be some very nice ones.

oshn, one thing you could do would be to get a tub with a tiling flange and then put up one-piece surround pieces from Swanstone or Corian, for instance--would be like a tub/shower combination but better quality surround material.

my house also has only one full bath and it is small one. While you have to think carefully about space using it is easier on your pocket to remodel ;)
One piece tub/shower surround is mostly for new housing as usually there is no way to bring whole unit in.
Big box stores offer models that a more than one piece/ tub and 3 walls separately/. It is usually inexpensive and lower quality or made from fiberglass which is very brittle.
Unless you planning to remodel for quick sale I am not sure it is sound solution in the long run.
You can find good quality acrylic systems which will be sturdier/ Corian is acrylic too/ at specialty stores or get one installed from companies like Bathfitter, Re-bath or Luxurybath.
Or you could get new tub and tile the walls in the proper manner which will give you good shower surround as well.
