Where do you put all the toiletries and stuff??

Every time I see a beautiful bathroom with clean lines and no cabinet underneath the sinks, just a shelf, I love the look of it! But I ALWAYS wonder where the heck they put their "stuff". Are these people just clutter free?

I consider myself fairly low maintenance with regard to toiletries but one medicine cabinet for everything? Yikes! Where is the aspirin and the spare toilet paper and the travel kit and the blow dryer and all the other stuff?????

I am assuming that they have a vanity area (unpictured) or a closet nearby or something! Does anyone else wonder about this too?

yup, i also wonder. i got a pretty large medicine cabinet, 30hX24w (not installed yet) but i'm hoping the aspirin, hair spray and brushes could go in there. There are even larger medicine cabinets out there! i keep the spare toilet paper in the linen closet (in my hallway). in my case i do have a cabinet so that'll be where the hair dryer would go. but i really don't know where you'd put it without a cabinet. maybe hanging somewhere? or maybe like you said there's a cabinet or something somewhere in the room

Would never work for me, a toiletry junkie. I need cabinets under the sinks. I think you can achieve a clean, sleek look by installing a floating vanity. Besides providing storage, it has the added advantage of hiding the plumbing.

She has the most amazing amount of dishes! I can't believe how organized she is with so many places to put them. It was sort of mind-boggling, both times I looked. And I'm sure I'll look again trying to take it all in. Gotta love an over-the-top collector! LOL. And she definitely makes me feel better about having 11 china cabinets/curios and several hundred statues. I will say I think my statues take up less room than dishes tho. ;o) Then again, I can't stack mine! I was definitely ooohing and ahhhing over some of her cabinets. I love those things. I could FILL a house with cabinets, curios, and pretty, small-type tables. Heck with seating! LOL hugs, Karen

When we remodeled the kitchen in this house, I packed everything away in boxes. Once the remodel was done, I'd dig out my tools and utensils and then put them away where I used them as much as possible. Anything I did not use in a reasonable amount of time and that was left in boxes went to Goodwill. Now that we're getting closed to finished with the new house, I am thinking of doing the same thing. The new kitchen is 2-3 times as big as the old one and a completely different layout with tons more storage. I think I will do the same thing - only move what I use and put it away where I used it.

Take a look in your sink box for the templating paper that is hopefully there. I do know there is/was a thread on faucet placement awhile back... For me, I respectfully disagree with smiling in that I wanted everything on my dominant hand. And because of our bowl configuration it is. Most templaters/installers want to line them up in a straight line along your back edge. Placement issues... make sure they are far enough away from your sink lip if it is an undermounted sink. (don't ask! ;) make sure to leave enough room between the faucets and your back wall to avoid water being trapped and to make it easy to get a sponge/towel in there to cleanup I like the air switch near by to the garbage disposal and is the far right side of our setup Depending on the size of your sink to cabinet, you might have room to put the hot water faucet on the opposite corner from your main faucet. Wherever you put the two faucets, try to avoid putting them next to each other, as to avoid them banging into each other... Templating... lots of little decisions to make at this time. Have your favorite vice available afterwards for celebration!

JanJan, you might think to replace the toilets if they are that bad. The flush right ones we bought were pretty cheap & work great. It was an easy job. Our plungers and brushes have decorative storage housings but it's still evident what they are. I will move them to a spot in the garage, maybe all but one set will go to storage. Disposable brushes are a great idea. I am buying us all cheap travel bags for our toiletries and moved my son's things to our bathroom so we all use the same space and it's easier to maintain. We painted & reorganized his bathroom space, all needed. I will put up some items I bought for the new place and we just won't use that space on a daily basis anymore. While some people may feel differently, people expect to actually see signs of you living there. If your market is bad like ours, you could be spending a lot of money on disposable brushes. Do you have room under the sink? While having it look like a show house is nice, what does your neighborhood demand? With ours we don't have to "not live here" because even if I don't get stuff picked up, ours shows cleaner then most around here. I was told that you can tell it is kept up verses showing for a cleaning. I put the dish drainer in a cabinet, hubby likes to throw it in the locked shed. The offers we've had the toilet brush was where it usually is in the decorative holder and the dish drainer was in the cabinet. How much do pods cost? We are getting ready to sell and I think we have a lot of stuff to store. I have been selling things I don't think we need, but we can't sell everything. I am interested in the POD idea, but was wondering the cost. What is the market like in your area? Do you have kids? Will any of their stuff go into the PODS? For us, the PODS would have been really expensive and the location it would be kept at is a 30 minute drive, one way. They also require 24 hours IIRC notice if you want to get your stuff. I don't recall if there was a fee either if they had to bring the POD out to you so you can access it. From what I remember last year, it's put in a storage facility and some times they are stacked, so they might have to get it down. We ended up renting a garage sized storage at about $125 per month, thankfully too. The PODS would have been more expensive where we live. You also have to worry about packing it so that nothing breaks / moves during the drive to where it's going. We've been to our storage unit a few times on a moments notice. I couldn't imagine having to call someone and make an appointment.

Our bathroom is small (for a master) and since our vanity is along an exterior wall in Maine, we couldn't afford to give up insulation depth for a recessed medicine cabinet over the lavs. I was worried about where we'd put all the stuff, and planned open shelving for towels and baskets or smaller items.

However, now that we've installed the cabinetry, I found I have LOADS of space and don't need the shelves.

We designed a very sleek, simple vertical cabinet over the toilet, about 30" high by 6" deep by 16" wide. It holds feminine items and medicines and first aid stuff, and is only about 1/3 filled.

Our vanity is sleek and up on legs, but we designed the sink installation to avoid interfering with the space at the top as much as possible, so we have four cavernous drawers to use. I got divider things from Ikea (soft and girly for me, square and hard for DH, since he didn't like mine!) and you can't believe how much stuff is in there. I put a plug on my side so I can keep a hair dryer in my top drawer. All of our towels are in one bottom drawer. And there's still loads of room!

Also, our two closets are just outside the bathroom, so I figured if I have any overflow (like a big bulk package of toilet paper) it could be stashed there pretty easily.

Stacey! This is so pretty! I admire your ability to keep things organized. Love the tab pulls and the wood grain of your vanity--post more pics :)

We actually had a large medicine cabinet (6' tall) built into the toilet room. It's recessed between the studs and it will hold toilet paper--but that's the thing. Where do all those people without a cabinet put their stuff?

We have kids' aspirin, homeopathic nose stuff, boxes and boxes of band-aids, athletic tape for ankles and fingers, I mean I could keep going on!!

It could be that the pictures you're seeing are mostly of people's powder rooms, which don't require the same storage as a main or master bath.

Where do you put all the toiletries and stuff??
