Kolher Black acrylic shower base--Show stains easy?

We are remodelling our bathroom---want to install a Kolher 36 X 60 shower base with integrate seat in one corner. This will cost us between $650 to $700 including tax. My wife's first choice in Kolher colors is BLACK --- she wants a matching toilet & vanity top--- so, now we're talking big money (to me anyway). I expressed a concern that the BLACK shower base might show lime stains and/or soap scum stains too easily. True or false? --I need information from people who have actual experience with the product. (Intuitively, I believe BLACK would not be a good idea; however,I need advice from actual owners of a Kohler BLACK shower base or---tubs). If my concern about the BLACK is true, could someone please suggest a better Kohler color as an alternative to BLACK(again, the experience of actual owners would be most helpful). Thanks, ---jaes

Where do you live? You can have my very expensive, relatively new black toilet. It's gorgeous. It looks beautiful for an hour after I clean it, then no one will sit on it because it looks dirty. I'm currently shopping for a new white toilet. It will not look as good with the slate I have, but I'm over that. By the way, I'm not picky about dirt. I'm a gardener.

The problems with the black toilet in my part of the world are threefold:
1. We have hard water with lots of lime and calcium. The inside of the bowl has a thick white ring and water spots all over it. The water spots are very difficult to clean off.
2. Toilet paper is white. Little tiny bits of white paper are really obvious on a black seat. White TP dust is too. Black seats show finger prints- and butt prints!
3. Dust. Unless you have a well-sealed home and a nice air filter, dust will show like nobody's business. It doesn't help that I have big windows in a small bath, so the light picks it up, but still. Dust accumulates around the bolt covers and in all of the cracks and I have to go at it with a Q-tip.

I imagine the shower pan will have the same issues if you have hard water or use bar soap.

The other issue I have is that highly contrasting colors in a small room make it look smaller, and unless you want to go all super dark, you might have the same issue.

I have no first hand experience to add to Hosenemesis' advice. I think that black toilets and other fixtures are one of those things that may seem like a better idea than the reality actually is. Butt prints?!? Oh my!!

Lenore, who is installing the granite slab shower? Start there and make your priority be hiring a VERY experienced tile professional - one you have vetted carefully to insure that their qualifications meet your design requirements and product selections. Stone slab installations are not for the B team, and especially in a wet area. Can it be done? Yes, depending upon the structure over which a solid surface stone is installed and the methods used. We install solid surface shower walls regularly, but from an empty cavity which we build to meet all specific design and installation specifications, including the pan. A solid stone slab cannot be supported by the pan (it is not meant to support a slab wall). A slab wall is pinned and tied so it is self supported, not supported by a pan. This is a very complex installation. A LOT to consider. As one example, the thickness of your slab? 2cm. 3cm? (effects the weight load on the space). And I could go on. After you have carefully vetted the qualified tile contractor, have this conversation with them. If you question or want to clarify their recommendations, check back or seek professional advice from other qualified sources. Please consult with a professional onsite. Good luck with your project.

If you have hard water, know that it will leave deposits in the grout which will require the use of CLR and some elbow grease. We remodeled this entire house built in 1989 except for the master shower. It's HUGE, tiled with seats and the double sink counter matches it. I wasn't a fan of the existing tile, but could live with it. It is rather light beige with bunches of flowers here and there. The cost of replacing all that tile would have been prohibitive! Just know hard water will make it harder to keep clean. This is how it looked during our remodel. Took a long time to get rid of those hard water stains. The junk is from them replacing the fan and light in the ceiling. This shower has no door. It doesn't need it. HUGE!

For two years I struggled to keep our tub and shower clean. My husband works in a job where he gets full of grease. Two years ago when we had the tub and shower put in, it was stressed that the wrong cleaner could void the warranty. We tried what was recommended with no luck. It was just terrible. I was embarrassed for anyone to even see our tub and shower. A year or two ago I purchased Mr. Clean 2 in 1 Eraser. I had never tried it before. Ya know how you buy something and it sits under the kitchen sink forgotten about? Well, It resurfaced as I was cleaning this morning. I thought what the heck... I used it on my fiberglass tub and shower this morning. It was a fricken miracle. I really wish I had taken a before and after picture. It looks like the day they put it in new. Please just try it. You won't be sorry. I promise. It took about 10 minutes and it was in bad shape. Mr. Clean 2 in 1 Eraser. =-)

been having a black cast iron sink for 10 yrs your research is correct hard to maintain very prone to scratches. It only looks clean if you dont use it. it looks beautiful when first installed but over yrs even expensive cleaners will not make then look nice. If you can afford to replace it every 2 yrs then its a good choice. mine is set in dark colored granite. Neutral colors are much easier to keep clean. I have ocd that black sink and dark colored granite absolutely kills me. You can wipe it over and over it still shoes much stains from water and the sinl is basically a hazy looking grey over the years. Regular stainless steel with no glossy finish is much easy to clean and stands the test of time.

I have a black acrylic shower base that I fell in love with but yes, it shows EVERYTHING! It gets milky streaks and itsistreakits hard to get rid of. Constant cleaning! And I squeegee and rinse daily to no avail.
