what are you going to wash in it, how much , and how often.

These use condensation drying which is not bad, miele, asko and bosch all make models. Good for when a 4" vent is not possible or practical like 28 stories up in an old building!.

Trouble with the combos is you can only do one load at a time, unlike a pair where one load can be drying while another is washing. The cycles tend to last a long time too. This could be fine for you if you'll just be doing tea towels or napkins once a week, If you want to do JR's football uni, and hubby's mechanic overalls every other day then get a regular pair .

I had one in the UK, for 10 years.

They were really developed purely as space-savers, for tiny European kitchens, where there was only room for one under-counter appliance. They are, at best, a compromise: the drum is too large for water efficiency, and too small for dryer efficiency. So you can only dry half the load you can wash, never actually the whole load, unless you only run a half-load option.

Condensing drying is great, and is common in European dryers these days.

So, on the one hand, you get the greater washing efficiency of a front loader, albeit using more water than a normal under-cabinet front loader, but can only dry a very small load at a time. As long as you are aware of the drawbacks and compromises involved in making the single unit, then OK.

If you don't mind a top-loader, then stick with the usual set up, with the dryer mounted above.

Alternatively, if you have the height, consider a European sized regular front loader, with a matching sized dryer stacked above it - you can usually get a stacking kit. Worth exploring anyway.

I assume you are talking the LG Combo unit. I am also considering that unit and from what I have gleaned from the online reviews it's a love/hate scenario.
Most negatives come from larger family or bigger load size issues. As others have said, a load takes about 4 hrs. to complete, which is fine if you do the load while at work or at night. If you're used to "laundry days", then you might be dissapointed.

The reason I am considering the LG is we only have a closet to put the unit(s) in. There was a Fridgidare combo (separate W/D) in there when we bought the condo and it consumed most of the space. With the LG or similar (I only know of one combo), we would have the top of the unit to hold a clothes basket and or fold clothes on.

This is a secondary washer for the main floor will mostly be for kitchen towels and my parents who will have the room on the main floor. There is a laundry room with a full dryer and washer combo. This would be more for the convenience of doing loads on the first floor as opposed to lugging everything a flight of stairs.

Willinak, I've been looking at reviews as well and am not completely sold on the "Condensation" washers. There are new washers more common in Europe and abroad then here in the US that use Heat pumps to dry very interested in those as they appear to be more promising. Link below for you to read.

Just curious, but what's the concern about condensation? It means no dryer hose or vent is needed - the steam is allowed to condense and then drains out through the normal washer drainpipe, so much less installation needed.

In my experience it was very efficient, so I'm curious what the concerns are.

I've never used one before so its just a concern from the lack of education and experience on those types of dryers.

To clarify, it's the combo units--not condenser dryers in general--whose drums are too small for efficient drying. The LG takes forever to do a cycle, apparently. The Fagor works much faster, so I've heard, because it runs on 220v instead of regular American 120v. Of course, that means you have to have a 220v outlet installed, but I doubt that's an expense you would regret later, if it cuts your washing/drying time in half. I'm putting a link below to the five different washer-dryer combos sold on AJ Madison. I think there used to be an Asko, and perhaps another couple of brands, but they're discontinued.

I was looking into this myself and ultimately decided that while a combo unit didn't make sense, what did make sense for us was a stackable combo of 24" (compact) front-loading washer and dryer, with the dryer being either a normal vented one (if possible) or a condenser dryer. Stacking a compact washer and condenser dryer gives you almost all the advantages of a combo unit (you can put it anywhere, no need for a vent) without the disadvantages (you can do two loads at once in a normal amount of time). The only downside is that it costs you some vertical space.

Asko makes compact condenser dryers designed to stack on their compact front-loading washers. Bosch does too, and maybe Miele. Buying the two units costs you more than a single combo unit, obviously.

hey jersey - condensation dryers work fine on 220v. I have a Bosch model at an apartment and it's reg. dry cousin at another home. The condensate doesn't take much longer at all, in fact it's not even noticeable.

Re: mom & dad - if they are in residence, I don't think those units are going to be very good for you. If you're talking about for when they come to visit for 3 days to a week then, sure. If they are semi-permanent residents then get a stackable euro size pair.

We've had our 24" LG going on 6 months now. Super happy with it. It takes 3.5 hours per load, but the clothes come out clean and very dry. Last night I put in a ridiculous amount of dark clothes, really filled it up, and it still did a great job in the normal amount of time.

If you have space constraints, then they are great. We replace a stacked 27" wide vented combo and the new LG actually holds more clothes. Having no agitator really helps!

We would love one of these for our kitchen! Much cheaper than building a laundry room. We would love to get the dryer out of the kitchen, but keeping the washer is OK.

I realize it's love/hate, and Europeans have used these type of models on a regular basis.

I too have been looking at these and thought I'd check on the Asko WCAM 1812. Much to my dismay, I found many highly negative reviews having to do with constant breakdowns & in many instances parts catching fire. Also very poor customer service.
I also learned that Asko was sold years ago to the Antonio Merloni group which has since gone bankrupt & resold it to Gorenje in 2010. There was some speculation that Merloni had slapped the Asko label on an inferior product. (Don't know how true this is).
I've sent Miele an e-mail asking if they have plans for their WT 2780 which is available in the UK to be sold in the US, but my hopes are not high.

AFAIK the Asko combo machine isn't even available in the US anymore. It's just not a popular type of machine in this country. I've heard from salesmen that Asko went through a rough patch a few years ago but has cleaned up its act. We've had an Asko dishwasher for nearly a year with no problems whatsoever. We love it and are probably going to go with a stackable Asko 24" washer/dryer.

Got a reply back from Miele regarding purchasing WT2780 or equivalent in the US or importing it from the UK.

"Thank you for your interest in Miele products.

There are no plans at this time to offer the WT2780 or its equivalent in the United States.
Be advised Miele USA will not honor warranties on products not purchased within the United States due to differences in specifications."

This seems short-sighted to me. Taking into account the number of condo dwellers who would like an in-house unit as well as the very large number of downsizing boomers who would like an accessible unit so they don't have have to go to the basement or garage, I would think that there would be a good market opportunity for a high quality manufacturer like Miele. Oh well, back to researching combo units.
