Pros / Cons Banjo Vanity Top?
Comments (9)Thank you all so very much for your opinions both pro and con. And seeing your pics of actual banjos in a home, not a hotel, is priceless. Again, Thank you! I was trying to put into words what I thought the banjo top would do in our teensy bathroom and Bob_cville wrote it perfectly: "It really helped draw the space together visually." When standing in the bathroom I get the feeling I'm standing in a tall refrigerator shipping carton. My husband can stand in the middle, stretch out his arms and reach all walls. Tall but small room. I didn't account for the tile floor and thickness of the lid on the toilet tank so I'll actually have almost 11 inches of space to work on the guts of the toilet should something happen (being it's a brand new Toto I'm hoping 'something' doesn't happen for quite a long time). There is only room for a 25" wide vanity - tiled top with 1" hang-over on sides and front. Our reason for considering the Banjo ---By the time we add the 16" round sink (no holes for faucets) and the faucets in the tiled top, that leaves us room for maybe (hopefully) our liquid pump soap container. In this photo --- Window wall is 3" to the right of the toilet. Shower curb starts immediately behind the door. Again, thank you all....See Moreusing hand-held shower bar as safety bar?
Comments (24)Just so you know exactly what I have...The two rings that trim out where the grab bars attach to the wall each have circlular section that are a slightly warmer tone, almost satin nickel-ish compared to the rest of the chrome grab bar. It would probably normally bother me a lot, but after a total gut renovation on this old houseI've had to let go of perfection to save my sanity. Especially on things that I might only see for a moment each day when I turn the shower water on and off. Also, at the time I was shopping for grab bars, these deltas were the style, function and best price point for us. I'd buy them again. I might request replacement trim pieces after I get a kitchen counter, but right now they're way down on the renovation's prioritized to-do list....See Morepros & cons of shower base vs. tile floor
Comments (10)Pete summarized the main points nicely, though I'd disagree that solid surface pans are all ugly. Plain, perhaps, but I don't think they necessarily detract from the look of a beautifully tiled shower. But in the end, aesthetics are a personal opinion, so only you can decide if it matters to you. One more thing no one mentioned: pre-fabs are idiot-proof. If tiled floors (and all the stuff that goes underneath) are not installed correctly, you can end up with a mess on your hands. But you don't often see GW horror stories entitled "my contractor screwed up my solid base shower!" :-) My sister has a tiled shower floor and complains of discolored grout. That's what drove me initially to do a solid surface pan. Ease of install and idiot-proofness were bonuses for this DIY-er. And I like it fine. We're done with all the bathrooms in our house, but now that I'm much more informed about shower construction, I'm likely to try a fully tiled (and kerdi'd) shower in a future bathroom project, should it materialize someday....See MorePassing on the pros and cons of our towel warmer
