Safety Issue After Sears Installation

Sears installation neglected to install the safety clamp/ring on the appliance electrical cord. This clamp/ring is intended to keep the cord from rubbing against the metal pass-through hole in the appliance after installation. When I formally complained to Sears about this issue, they did nothing so I went to the local Sears store and they gave me a new cord (for free) which I installed myself. Just for the record, the old cord (2 days old) was nicked and cut by the sharp edges of the pass-through hole during improper installation (I presume). I also tried to post a candid review of this product on the Sears website and they refused to post it and never responded as to why. Just an honest caution to keep a watchful eye on these minimum wage Sears installation crews.

Last August, we had a new pair of Kenmore front-loading washer/dryers installed by the Sears deliverymen. When finished, they gave me a plastic bag of owners manuals and what I thought were extra, un-needed parts. By that day I had over a week of dirty laundry waiting to be washed, so I stupidly stored away the bag and started the laundry. Two weeks later while doing more laundry, I heard the sound of gushing water. I ran into the laundry room to see the drain hose twisting around in the air, spurting out water. (Which ended up in my basement, ruining a spare computer). Apparently, the delivery people failed to secure the drain hose with the plastic part that was still in that plastic bag! I wish the guys would have at least mentioned to me about the part, but they said nothing. Since I signed off on the delivery, Sears would not even re-imburse my $65 delivery fee. So, beware and be wary of any delivery/installation.

You need to make a complaint to the BBB and you also need to call Sears ask for the store manager and let them know you are going to contact the CPSC regarding their failure to comply with the National Electrical Code which requires that strain reliefs be installed on power cords. Sears is already in hot water with the CPSC concerning not installing anti-tip brackets on ranges I'm pretty sure the manager will be quite sensitive to your plight.

Replace the spark plug. You could squirt or pour a small amount of fuel into the carborator air intake and see if it fires. If you are sure you are not getting fuel into the bowl, then clean and check operation of the float, seat and needle valve controlled by the float. Check for spark. If no spark then check the safety switch associated with the blade brake. Replace the ignition coil as the last resort if there is no spark.

Also, the Honda GX200 is 200cc's. My lawn mower engine is the Tecumseh LEV120-361523A. The 120 after the LEV stands for 12.0 CID and that's 200cc's. So I doubt the Honda flange is the same as, or even close to the Tecumseh flange, as well as if the carb would fit the space. I guess I will just have to head out to a local "generic" mower repair shop and ask advise and to see what the Honda carb looks like. Heck, if they have a bunch of used units sitting around with a manual choke and of the right engine size, eyeball what I can and measure everything that looks close. I modified the hell out of my compressor with a condenser to pull the moisture out of the air before it gets to the dryer and then the main tank. In CA moisture was not an issue as the air is so dry, but out here the humidity is so bad my air tools spit water all the time, and the air tank can fill up with water fast. I also made an adapter to fit a new pulley on the tapered shaft of the pump so I could get rid of the crappy ribbed belt to add a V belt. OH, and the Toyota muffler welded to a section of flexible SS exhaust tubing and mounted to the new handle (damn thing was so loud)! And a real handle, not the crap thin wall tube that was stock and lasted a month! Why not modify the hell out of the mower? New carburetor and a quiet exhaust!

Thanks for the replies! These were really helpful. We weren't going to have a backsplash (just some high gloss paint) b/c there isn't a lot of room above the stove - we have an above-the-range microwave, and there is only a little bit of wall above the stove because of that. But a small bit of stainless steel to fill the gap might work (also, we wanted to use the Bertazzoni toekick to keep that area under the stove from collecting interesting and disgusting things that we can't reach to clean, but apparently it only works if your stove is exactly 36" high, and ours had to be placed higher to be level with the countertops - so maybe whoever does that piece could also come up with a simple toekick). It sounds like it might be a good idea to try to find a stainless steel fabricator - any tips on how to find one? This would mean going out of my way to hire yet another firm to do work in the apartment, and we are at the end of our time limit for renovations (baby due any day now, and just general renovation fatigue has set in), so I'm hoping to keep extra logistics to a minimum...

Oh crud. All you practical people who don't like split skulls and broken legs had to chime in :^) You can't really see it from the pic that includes the family room, but the wood is a perimeter there with carpet in the middle. We like that look and don't really want to put carpet all the way to the step (to provide the visual clue). Also, that wood strip (the one just below the step) is a high traffic area between the back door and door to the garage. We have friends (who have the same model) with the whole family room carpeted and that path on the carpet gets pretty dirty. So, we aren't in favor of any plan that puts carpet or anything else (e.g. bookcase) on that wood strip. We are replacing all of the wood on the upper level with the remodel (if we don't replace, there is a lot of patching that needs to be done because the wood is not currently under the cabinets. It was only $800 more to replace and when the wood was installed by the previous owner, it wasn't properly acclimated and there are large gaps). We can easily do something like Chicagoans suggested: using the wood pattern or stain color to define the edge of the step. Any ideas or pictures of this? Also, I measured the area behind the chairs to the step: 3.5 feet with the chair pushed in. 2.5 feet with someone sitting. 1.5 feet with a normal push the chair out to get up. 1 foot with a bug push the chair out to get up.
