Electrolux Refridgerator disaster

So the electrolux refridgerator I decided on, the EW28BS... FD/BF arrived last week. A total lemon! The package and wrapping didn't seem abused which is something I take note of, so I figured all systems are go. After the unit was installed the delivery crew took off, and then things really went bad. The waterline leaked, the BF wasn't sealed and off center, and there was a broken bearing that I found and I experienced difficulty with closing the freezer compartment. And on top of that, a very auditable rattling deep inside the unit. Got on the horn with Electrolux and the store where purchased. " Get this thing out of here, and pleased refund my purchase." The retailer said no problem, but said I needed a return authorization first. WHAT??? Alright, I am not an unreasonable person and $#*@! happends. Electrolux said that their policy is to have a service tech. come by and evaluate the unit first. He indicated several repairs are necessary. Bottomline. We are not repairing anything. Spoke with Electrolux and they sensed my aggravation and displeasure with good customer service. Asked if I wanted a new unit, provided the retailer with a return authorization, and even threw in a $150 check which just arrived yesterday for the inconvenience of not having a refridgerator. We just had a "hurricane" last Saturday, the day the exchange unit arrived and so far it seems to be the pick of the litter. First, I was very concerned that I couldn't backout the deal and rethink my plan. Then, I thought I would have to forcefully accept a repair alternative on a $3,000.00 never before-used, brand new appliance and with no consideration of an exchange... on and on. While I'm feeling better now, I'm still kind of on pins and needles. This global manufactoring i.e. made in Mexico, parts from China, sold in America, way of life, having so many hands at turning a product is worrisome to me.

Mango, your post was a tough thing to decode. You got a lemon; it rattled and parts fell out on the floor? You read them the riot act so they sent you a check for $150 and a whole new fridge which is working great. Is that right?

I think they did pretty well for you by giving you a like for like, if they in fact did replace the machine for you. The $150 bribe was pure bonus. No way you're behind the deal with a tasty check for $150 and a whole new fridge in hand. I think you should go out to the kitchen right now and give your new fridge a few love pats of encouragement and welcome to your house. A tender kiss and caress to overcome the shock of being placed in a strange new home. Her sickly sibling could not continue in service, but this new helpmeet, accompanied by a respectable dowry, will, with adequate encouragement and love, join your household as an honored cooler of food and cherished chiller of beverages.

    The REAL Refridgerator Manufacturers?

Does Samsung definately make the GE counter depth french door? I'm not sure of the model number but i want a counter depth stainless steel french door that does not have ice in the door. Want an ice maker and am somewhat indifferent to the water dispenser thing. Living in Florida I have a water cooler (our water kinda sucks) with 5 gallon jugs on it. I did think the interior button that you can push for water (saw that on a few different frig models/manufacturers) was pretty cool... though not critical. I'm also liking the new Fisher and Paykel counter depth french door that is coming out in March. Some ebay stores have it available but I haven't seen it in person yet.

We have the 36" French door model with no ice/water in the door. Our first one had mechanical problems, but we are happy with the replacement one. We chose it because it felt better constructed and we love the enclosed deli drawer. I know there are other French Door frig owners but sure about sxs. If you are in NorCal, this weekend, the company we bought ours from is having warehouse sale in Rohnert Park.

Wine is usually stored and served warmer than sodas and red and whites are different temps still. That being said my Sub Zero undercounter integrated fridge has a tiny freezer on the bottom, a regular fridge in the middle and a wine shelf on top - all at different temps. That being said, Sub Zero is probably the most expensive in this category. I’ve seen some drawer undercounter fridges that allow for temp setting for each drawer and that might work for you.

    Antss,

Yes. Subzero was on my list but the best $$$ knocked me out. Saw viking and the FD/BF viking I saw was really a maytag according to the clerk. Next was the monogram TD/BF. Problem is not at all American and reports indicate multiple problems. So tell ya what...What ever happen to manufacturing, logistics, offices and headquarters all located on the same grid. People will cite cost/profit ratio. But I say greed! and the complete disreguard for pride and competition is what CEO's seek to eliminate. An American made, family owned business like Subzero doesn't need to be a Kings ransom in order to be fine quality.

    mango -

"But I say greed! and the complete disreguard for pride and competition is what CEO's seek to eliminate"

Nope , their job is to maximize shareholder value, period. It one of the tenets of capitalism.

You have also answered your own question without even knowing it, just like thousands of other consumers:

"was on my list but the best $$$ knocked me out"

You cannot have it both ways - American products, from American factories by American workers making enough to afford the "American Dream" and low prices to compete with the foreign imports.

Fact is the foreign worker is willing to work for a few dollars a day because his standard is lowered and you will not get the American worker to ride a bike to work from his grass hut or 2 room government apartment.

Like /agree with it , or not. This is the landscape today, so pay the freight or stop complaining about the "foreign junk". Quality and service and good design costs $$$$ whether you are hocking fridges, candy, sweaters, or steak dinners.

Now , to bring this full circle. If you can't or won't buy the high priced domestic good, is the CEO supposed to sit by and watch his company go down the tubes cause you won't open your wallet, or should he try to find a solution (foreign workers) so he can keep a few locals employed and maintain his obligation to the owners? If there is greed it would have to be on your part because you don't want that high dollar $$$ cause you can get a really pretty one for half the price.

Nothing wrong with either case, greed is what makes the system go round and round. Just don't complain about someone else's unless you live in a monastery or convent.

I don't recall having seen any other post, where an appliance was replaced (+ and extra $150 for "Inconvenience"). Other fridge failures, we have seen, ppl complain about not being reimbursed for the food that they lost?
No one here, will accuse me of being anti-Electrolux, but I myself have posted about staying away from Elux Fridges, due to the many posts we have seen of problems with their Fridges (sorry you missed all those posts about the problems) or chose to ignor them and buy anyway?
We do hope your replacement works and continues to work well for years. I certainly don't think Elux was showing "Greed" in how they handled your problem, but they do need to spend more money on their Fridge line so that the quality of those, matches the quality of most of their other appliances--particularly their cooking appliances--cooktops-ovens and stoves---most of these we see very positive reports on---as has been my own experiences for more than 3 years now.

    Antss,

Oh yeah you are so right. And that bull on "maximize shareholder value" Let me preface this. I do not play, nor am I invested in the equity's market. I prefer casinos, because at least there's pretty women who serve free cold drinks there. And as far as shareholder value...you mean the many Ken Lays out there who, devalue stock, turn around and buy it all up, cook the books to falsify the the stocks true worth value, then sell it off only to further deplete the share and shareholder's stake and thus life savings. Is that the type of capitalism you support? And is that what makes the system go 'round??? That Antss is criminal, and at the least it is deciet and dishonesty. You sound like one of those country club types. And I suppose with an attitude like that only the little people should pay taxes...right? Or just like the so called Bernie Madeoff "victims" who were fooled into believing that they were somebody special and that their $#@&! didn't stink! and so now are demanding just compensation when in fact no just compensation is due at all. Said it youself, GREED RIGHT. Give it some thought and think maybe next month when your dividends arrive and all looks rosie and bright it might be that someone was intentionally ruined for the sake of securing your wealth. THAT IS NOT WHAT CAPITALISM IS. I humbly apologize if I came off beligerent. That wasn't my intent. Hopefully you are a better person than the response you've given to me, or maybe I missed the mark.... probably both. I hope???

    Gary,

It's all one big throw of the dice. Even with those subzeros, people have not gotten what they thought they were getting. Or a Samsung...some swear by 'em others like me would probably fill a Coleman cooler with dry ice before I risk the aggravation of a Korean made appliance. Like your friend Ass up there, he/she isn't concerned with affordability and quality just show me the money so I can over pay for something that others can't afford. " That makes me special." I'm constantly reminde of what PT BARNUM said and that there's a sucker born every minute.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with you about SZ, alto I really do hope new data will show improved reliability on their part, I hate to see all of our manufacturing go off-shore. I also agree with you about the aggravation of some off shore made appliances---they couldn't care less if a problem does develop---witness my LG DVD player/recorder that has been a piece of junk, since first bought.
I did buy US for Fridge (Jenn-air) before they were bought by Whirlpool and it has been trouble free over 3 years.
I didnt do so well with a US Made Cooktop--fancy and expensive and in the junk pile in less than 2 years. Unfortunately no ovens or speed ovens, back in 2006 that were built by US companies, caught my eye like the Elux Icons did--so I bought those and have been extremely happy with them, as am I with the Elux Icon Induction cooktop that replaced that piece of junk I bought.
Hopefully your Elux experiences will parallel Mine.
Good luck with cold beer and Hot Food!!

    Mango,

It seems pretty clear to me that inspite of the lack of visible damage that your first fridge was dropped at some point in the transportation cycle and was damaged. E-lux seems to have gone above and beyond in making this right. Any item can be damaged in shipment, you just got unlucky there. But I'd hardly call that a "disaster," in fact you were treated better than I'd expect from stories of other appliance manufacturers I've read. You have your new fridge and some small compesation in your pocket. It is examples just like this that make me want to buy from E-lux. I guess we have a different outlook on life. If I were writing this post I might have made the subject "Great E'lux Customer Support" I guess when you look for things to complain about it is not hard to find them.

I have to agree with others that to complain about buying products that are not made in America, and then buy products not made in America, you have no credibility with me. Sub-zero/Wolf is not a publically traded company. They have no stock holders to make happy, they only have thier customers to make happy or go out of business. You are free to pay the price of made in America and support your own values but you don't put your money where your mouth is. This is called hypocracy.

Feel free to call me an ass too.

    Texaskitchen,

I'm sorry. Did I call anybody an ass? And as far as complaining which I wasn't, my post indicated good customer service on the part of electrolux. It's there in black and white. I use the gardenweb occassionally to share experiences and concerns which will equivate to either fairness on behalf of the customer by the corporation or as complete unwarranted hassel. And then there's everything in between that the reader will have to determine for themself. I DO NOT! REPEAT,DO NOT! rate the company nor do I tell people how to spend their hard earned money on a particulare brand unless I can offer concrete evidence both in customer service and product performance. I will warn or share my experiences if and only if I feel it could help a person make a selection . And like I indicated, I have no stakes in the equity's market and to prove my point further you have indicated " it's examples like this that make me want to buy from E-lux"... and guess what? I didn't have to suggest that. You've determined that yourself. Case & Point. I have a concern with a global market for reasons that I won't list here for obvious reasons so I indicated that the global market concerns me and that's it. That being said, I would rather buy an American product, built for Americans and by Americans. I don't see the connection with an American product costing big $$$ just because it's American. If that were the case the slave labor of "under industrialized nations and its people should translate into a GE, Samsung, etc. appliance like a refridgerator costing what... a couple of hundred dollars instead of a few thousand $$$? And just for your editification nearly 50% of the American workforce have less than 17,000.00 dollars in their retirment plans and it's even worse for the few remaining. So, feel free in me calling you an ass... where ever that came from? And since I feel it is beneath me to even come off as inflammatory on this web I don't have to. You did a pretty good job of that yourself.

    Mojavean,

Thank you. I will admit that I probably had that thought in my mind but in no way did I intend to use any slander against Antss. Freudian indeed. Now I suppose I'm exposed as the ASS! LOL I'll bet Antss plan that out against me.

    Antss,

If you're out there, I humbly apologize.
