97 Plymouth Neon Fuel Pump

I have no power to the fuel puel motor lead, did a continuity check of the entire length of the wire, checked ok. Checked voltage at the power distribution center, voltage into the fuel pump relay (20 amp fuel pump fuse ok), but no voltage out. Replaced the relay, same problem. Looking at the schematic, my other thought is possibly a faulty power-train control module (PCM). Would appreciate any feed back before expending the $$$ for the PCM. Thanks

There is a device (probably several) controlling the fuel pump relay - the schematic should show this..Do you have the schematic of the reply itself ??
Maybe a roll-over sensor...

Chrysler strategy is to not energize the fuel pump relay unless the PCM see's crankshaft reference pulses.

Before I write a book, how good are you at electronics? I'll tell you up front "ohming" out wires isn't an indication of electronics experience. Frankly, thats a strategy that is overused, and missused. A single strand of wire making connection over a break in a wire will ohm the same as a complete wire, but there is no way it will carry the current that a circuit needs to operate.

So that being said, first question.
Does the check engine light come on when the key is turned on?
Does the check engine light go out when you are cranking the engine?
By chance is the car equipped with cruise, and have a cruise lamp, and if so is it flashing while your cranking the engine?
Are there any trouble codes?
Do you have a scan tool that shows serial data, and displays crank signal, cam signal, and sync?
Do you have a 5v reference voltage to the TPS?
Do you have an 8v reference voltage to the Crank sensor, Cam sensor, and VSS?
Do you have an ocilliscope so that you can look for the square wave created by the CAM and CRANK sensors at the PCM?
Do you have a service manual with the PCM schematic so that you can identify what pins connect to what sensors?

Hogwash. People drive the economy with demand. If people wanted cleaner more efficient America they would demand and get it. People hold the money and the big business wants it, to include the oil companies. The absolute primary reason we dont have a better option to power our world is because we demand the high performance, gas guzzling gigantic automobiles and trucks to haul our two children and all thier expensive toys. We are spoiled rotten to the core and blow energy resources like there is no tomorrow. But lawn mowers are not the way to clean air for our country and definitely not the great energy wasters of our time. America needs to learn how to go back to simpler forms of entertainment and learn contentment with fewer energy wasting toys. Get back on track with fuel efficient transportation and CLEAN UP THOSE SMOG LOVING FACTORIES! BUT what will it cost us besides money and a few toys? Well for one thing we will no longer have a problem with illegal immigrants, as there will be no more factories to leave us smog, no more jobs to fight over, and eventually no more America because we are willing and ready to keep buying products made all around the world where they dont give a tinkerers DAMN about the ecology, air polution, water and land polution, or worker safety, and especially dont give a damn about you Americans or your children! Keep on buying those cheap products specially designed to run in America, except most of us are going to be clawing around to find a way to buy food instead and only the elite rich will be buying. That is until the little guy finally gets fed up with being bottom feeders to the elite and they revolt and take their country back. Pity our poor children as we are rapidly digging them a hole they will never dig out of. America is becoming a cesspool and so many of us are not fighting it, just jumping in and swimming along with the rest of the lemmings! Good luck!

First time back on line in a long while. Finally bought a new computer (Sony Vaio) Hopefully I didn't miss too much! I don't particularly pay too much attention to CR, although sometimes I find myself browsing through their magazines while shopping around at the store just out of curiosity. Their good and bad bets are pretty much the same as they were in previous years. I find Carsurvey.com and Epinions.com to be more valuable. I have a 1996 Honda Accord with the 4-cylinder, 223,000 miles and just keeps on trucking. I've had to service it as I would with any other car, but it's never given me any unexpected problems on the road or failed to start one morning. The engine still retains most of it's original major components (such as the alternator, AC compressor, starter, PS pump, master cylinder, etc.) which is truly amazing in my opinion. I am a strong believer in preventive maintenance and upkeep, and I'm sure that has had something to do with my car's reliability... but I've definitely only had to do the very basics to keep it so. Also have a 2001 Pontiac Trans Am, which CR listed as unreliable. Currently have 56,000 miles and haven't done squat to it except change the oil/filters, brakes, tires and light bulbs. Absolutely nothing else. Had a pretty good experience with a 97 Mercury Cougar also(V8 model) The transmission and intake manifold were the only weak links in this otherwise solid car...but my transmission and manifold had already been replaced before I bought the car used with 90,000 miles. Sold it with a little over 150,000 miles.

origanly had a cam sensor code , changed that then it happened again so i tryed another sensor worked for a short time and happened again this time with a high temp code. I then found that the radaitor was leaking and put in a new hose and a new radaitor. Now I have no codes but still doing the same thing .The engine also smokes when this happens.the car is an older car and has 145,000 miles on it .

I bought a 1995 Acura Legend in 1998 with 32,000 miles on it. It was a 36-month lease turn-in and was literally in PERFECT condition. It sat unsold on the Acura dealerâs used lot because it was the least expensive model, the L 4-door, with cloth interior and 5-speed manual transmission. But it was exactly what I wanted, White with Taupe interior, Bose stereo, Power seats with memory and (the best part) the sweetest 200hp 3.2L V6 Iâve ever experienced! I paid $26,000 out-the-door, which felt like a fortune at the time (I was 23). I drove it 40-50k miles per year until I was t-boned by a commercial truck in August 2005. It had just turned 329,000 miles at the time and didnât burn a drop of oil (synthetic), the clutch had only been replaced once and the transmission shifted like new. Other than scheduled maintenance, the only thing I ever had to replace was the A/C compressor and two ABS sensors. The impact was so hard the passenger-side door panel ended up breaking my right hand and forearm (it was in the middle of the car). The rearview mirror broke loose during the crash and hit me in the head just above my right ear. It left most of the glass mirror fragments in my head and took 38 staples to close the wound! I also had damage to two discs in my cervical spine that required a 3-level c-spine fusion the following year. But I was able to recover from all of those injuries, which was pretty amazing considering how bad my poor Legend looked. I bought a 2006 Mazda3 Hatchback to replace it in December 2005. Eight years later, Iâm just past 190,000 miles and going strong!

So, this system is far more complex than just a "roll over" sensor which Chrysler may not use or even a crank sensor.
Evidently, the fuel pump relay is energized after the engine spins over, not before (the old way), and better than using a roll-over sensor..
I have read about people complaining about paying $90 to have the "codes read", whereas AutoZone will do it for "free"..
But, in all that you have described here, John, may well be worth the $90..
Certainly the guessing method has cost a lot more than $90, and thus far only waste has resulted....

Thats the thing, "having codes read" is barely one step in the routine of performing diagnostics. This circuit really isn't too complicated for someone that is both trained in electronics, and already familliar with the circuit. For anyone else, it's probably one of the most complex "systems" they have ever encountered.

You should see what newer cars have in comparison to this one!

I saw that there is a recall for 95 neons because moisture was seeping into the PCM and causing problems. I'm wondering if that is my problem. My speedometer flies up and down when I drive in the early morning or during rain. Then one day all of the gauges dropped then went back to their appropriate positions. Then this morning, my temperature gauge suddenly excelerated through the roof and a bell went off. I pulled over, checked the engine and it wasn't even hot! I started the car and the temperature gauge went back to normal. If it's the PCM, can I just buy one from ebay?
