What to do when leaving car unused in garage for 2 months?

Hi,

I have 1995 Toyota Camry with a 36-month battery that is now almost 2 years old. I have to leave for 2 months and don't know what preventative steps I should take with the car so it does not give me problems when I return.

Should I be unhooking the terminals from the battery, should I buy a battery charger and attach it to the battery?

What excactly should I do?

I would do the following......
1. Use a trickle charger to keep battery charged up.
2. Add 1 pint of Sea Foam to a full gass tank (get it into carb).
3. Keep it in a garage if possible
4. Leave it alone....2 months isnt very long.

1. So I keep the battery terminals attached but connect a charger to it.

2. Is Sea Foam something I buy from an automotive store?
Also by getting it into the carb means I should drive the car around for a few miles after I add the Sea Foam?

Yes, the car will be in the garage and its so so hot here in California.

Looks like garage is on left over by the bush. Couple of things would help to know, is the outside wall(1 away from house) on the property line or very close to property line. That would make a lot of difference what you could do. Can you strip paint off wall where brick is painted(might need sandblasting)? I was thinking you might put in a covered carport in that area if you have room to put in necessary supports. It's mostly a roof covering the area then wouldn't be so tight a space to drive through unless existing garage is on property line. Might be nice shady area for kids to play or to sit & talk when not needed as a driveway. In a heavy snow area might make things better or worse having garage gone. Plenty of storage in 2 car garage so you don't need the 1 car garage? Those are questions i would ask myself if it was my place. Hope this helps!

Hi Randy427, Thanks for your reply. I am not selling the house; we are doing a back addition and a bump out to the garage. The garage will be 16' 7" in width (for most of the length), but it is also long enough to park two cars in tandem one behind the other which is how we will park two cars. We are considering taking a bit from the width to add to the front foyer, and wondered if that would be a major turn off when it came time to sell (there would still be room to park a van and car in tandem). If the width of 16'7" is indeed considered just wide enough to park two cars side by side, we might not steal from it for the foyer. If 16'7" is already insufficient to park two cars side by side we may very well take a feet feet of width away to accommodate the foyer. Thanks for your help.

I doubt they will use the litter box during the 5 hours, and it's probably safer to just keep them confined to their crates while you are on the road- lest somebody panic and try to get away, even with the car closed up, it can be distressing. I'll give you my advice on traveling/moving with cats because we've done it a few times. Take extra blankets and/or towels, a roll of paper towels, a non-offensive cleaning agent, and some plastic grocery bags. You never know when someone is going to have an accident from one end or the other, and if you need an airtight laundry bag, a trash bag, new bedding, and something to wipe down the carrier, you'll be glad to have it. Also take along an extra bottle of water in case you have to clean up a cat as well. My very responsible cats have both messed themselves in one way or another while on the road. I also found that my cats traveled better when a light sheet was put over the carrier from the sides- not restricting their view out the front, but removing any awareness of scenery flashing by to the side.

There is significant disappointment on our end as well as the builder that this was missed by the architect along the way. In fairness to the architect, the builder allowed us to work with the architect to develop the plans we love prior to any $ commitment from us but he did not want to pay for the survey until we were invested. So, here we are. We are disappointed because the length of the home has been established for several months and the width of the property has as well. The survey and site plan were just officially performed but the inputs are the same and have been known...so we are disappointed but still love the floorplan, location, etc. and want to make the best runner up choice we can :)

You also might want to check with your insurance company to
see if you can leave your property and or car unattended
for more that 30 days. As far as the car goes. Leave it alone. 60 days won't cause any problems. If the battery is dead when you come back it was no good anyway. I've left
batteries unattended for a year and they were fine. I have a vehicle that has gas in it from 1992. Still runs.The smell is pretty bad but it does run.

Your car must get great mileage if your tank still has gas from 1992...LOL
