Help! Granite backsplash overlapping mirror?

We are in the middle of a remodel, and I have run into a bit of a problem.

We decided to leave the 4'x10' mirror up, for a variety of reasons... but let's not go there, ok?

The old vanity was really short (like 29") and the new one is 34.5". This places the top of the granite, about 1/2" above the edge of the mirror, and then the backsplash will be up another 4".

This wouldn't be too bad, but the vanity is only 6', and the other 4' of mirror is over the tub.

Any advice? Can I get a "It will look fine Dave, don't worry"?

Here is a picture of the new tub deck; the vanity will go to the right of it against the wall (where the pipes are sticking out of the wall).

Can you just do the top without a backsplash and trim a half inch off the bottom of the toe kick to make the top even with the mirror?

I am not sure that you will get significantly more splashing with no backsplash as you would with a 4" one.

Sorry, skimchi, for taking so taking so long to answer - it is a Crema Bordeaux. Just thought that I would thank everyone for taking the time to help me in my decision - much, much appreciated! I went to the granite store today and ordered a piece to go behind the stove - picked a piece that has a big splotch of the peachy coloured bit as well as the burgundy waves. I've ordered a custom bevel to match that of my cab doors, on three sides (top near the fan and then the two sides).....and to be able to accomodate the CHOCOLATE coloured matte tiles nicely. Sigh, yes, we went with chocolate. DH really really didn't like the cream, so I tried out the skinner 2 x 12 chocolate tiles behind the sink - interspersed with 2 x 2 of the little glass tiles.....and we love it!!! So I tried to be higher end, changed up the pattern, and gave it a go on the shortest of the L shaped backsplash walls....with a bit less success. The colour of the tile reminds me of hot chocolate. Maybe I'll tire of it by summer, and given the skills of the person who applied the tile (me), we'll be able to simply pop off the tiles and try something else :) I'll post photos in a couple of weeks, once the granite is in and the tiles are on! Again, thanks to everyone for sharing their opinions - it helped us truly explore our likes and dislikes!

Annab - I am sorry to say this, but my old kitchen's mirrored backsplash was the first thing I couldn't wait to rip out. I hope I haven't offended you, but the purpose of this forum is to share our experiences, and perhaps help people in their kitchen decisions. I strongly disliked the mirrored backsplash because (A) it only stayed clean-looking for about 1 minute. It's called a "backsplash" because, well, things splash on it, and the mirror shows, and reflects, every drop of spatter, grease, even water drops. (B) As Khat mentioned, and I will emphasize, the backsplash just became a reflection of everyone's torsoes. So every time you or family members walked around the kitchen, you saw torsoes. And because the torsoes weren't balanced by seeing the rest of the body, any, ahem, imperfection, was magnified. For small children, you just saw floating heads. (3) No offense, but my old kitchen was circa 1991 - it was my understanding that mirrored backsplashes were a late '80's-early '90's look. I know trends come and go and we shouldn't be a slave to them, but still I need to mention that the look can be considered by some to be dated. As you can tell, I didn't like my old mirrored backsplash, to such a degree that I felt compelled to tell you why. Sorry.

Your kitchen is rich and beautiful and all your choices reflect the traditional look you hoped to achieve. I think the espresso travertine will look perfect and IMHO the diagonal won't be too busy. Are you planning on the same BS above the pretty cream cabs as well? I was thinking that a whiter tumbled stone light Botticino or Bianco Antico might look great there. My thinking is, you'd be keeping in the same texture and family of stone as the darker travertine but matching the tone of the cream cabs like the travertine matches the tone of the darker cabs on the other run. Mixing it up could add additional interest as well. Here's one example of the tone of stone I was thinking of: It's just a thought. The travertine would look great too since it picks up the darker glazing color. Just wanted to throw another option out there.

It is simple enough. Put a couple dobs of silicone about 2" in from either end and in the middle from top to bottom. About a dime size blob will do. Gently press against the wall. If you are not a good artist with silicone, place a fine bead along the back of the vanity and set the splash on it to keep water from seeping behind the splash. If you are good, go with the blobs and silicone a very fine bead along the splash where it meets the vanity. I was taught to use as much silicone as needed, as long as you can't see it. Try some tape to keep the mess from spreading out all over the place. What do you need to grout for? Color match caulk is better. Hope this helps

Wouldn't it be weird to not have a backsplash?

I understand that it is to stop "splashing" from getting on the wall, but it seems that it is has an aesthetic quality as well.

Have you ever seen a bathroom top without a backsplash?

I didn't even consider that.

I can't shave 1/2" off the bottom because there are drawers in the toe kick area. But, 1/2" overlap is far less drastic than a 4.5" inch overlap.

I still wish I could convince LOML to just let me take down this gigantic wall of circa-1982 mirror.

Are you using 2 or 3 cm granite? If you're using 3, what about going to 2 cm? That would drop it your 1/2", give or take. The top would still be plenty strong enough.

I think that esthetically it would be better to have the mirror look even across the bottom.

A four inch backplash is standard but not necessary, I have done anywhere from no backsplash to tall backsplashes depending upon the situation.

I would also consider tiling the tub all the way up to the mirror and all the way over to the side of the vanity so there is not an odd little stripe of wall there.

The vanity top is being made from a remnant, so the thickness is cast in stone (no pun intended).

My intention was to remove this mirror and put up a much smaller one, just over the vanity. The tub wall would not have a mirror.

For some reason, my wife decided that she wanted to keep it.

I wonder if it is possible to cut a mirror that is already mounted on the wall? Meh, probably not.

I have an eight foot long mirror, it's probably 3 feet high, never measured. My friend, and countertop guy did our granite. It turned out I didn't have to move my mirror, but he asked if I'd mind. I thought it was glued on and he said nope, just those little clips. Do you have room to raise it? If not, call a mirror shop, I'm sure they'd cut it for you. Or, if it's not glued on, just take it down and put up something else.

I enjoy having the giant mirror. It's the best mirror in my house! We put wood molding around it to frame it, so it doesn't look so "builder" and the wood matches my vanity (we stained it) EASY to do!
