Oil Gel - Class Action Settlement - Toyota
Comments (25)To those searching for more on the Toyota engine oil sludge or gel matter, please see the following links: http://www.toyotaoilgel.com http://www.uc2.blogspot.com http://www.autosafety.org Follow "toyotasludge" on Twitter.com Watch the Toyota Sludge video on YouTube.com at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fs7WI2s-CVw If you have blue/white smoke from the exhaust, especially on start up; check engine light on; excess oil consumption or sudden disappearance of engine oil; failed emissions control components such as the oxygen sensor or catalytic converter; a thrown engine piston rod; or complete engine failure, then be on alert! Notify Toyota via CERTIFED letter with return receipt requested about your problem and ask for full repair coverage under Toyotas Customer Support Program for Engine Oil Gelation. Speak up loudly online if Toyota refuses to honor this program or continues to blame you in the wake of proper vehicle maintenance. If Toyota is totally unresponsive in the wake of a failed engine due to engine oil sludge build up, consider going to the following web sites to voice your concern: http://www.ConsumerAffairs.com http://www.RipOffReport.com Regardless of the Toyota response, be sure to file online vehicle owner complaints at: http://www.autosafety.org The Center for Auto Safety http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/ The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Just to make it clear, the Toyota engine oil sludge problemthe one that has attracted so many defamers to follow me around the internetis STILL a problem. There are many later model Toyota models showing signs of the same problem. What is worse, Toyota owners are reporting continued deception at Toyota and Toyota dealerships. Far too many Toyota owners are being told they do not qualify for the CSP repair cost coverage for one reason or another. Still other Toyota model owners who have sludged engines are being asked to pay thousands in repair costs despite proper vehicle maintenance. This is wrong! Comments (48). We all need to realize something: EVERY thing we do has SOME impact on the place we call home. NO form of energy is free of that condition. Mining coal, drilling oil, splitting seawater, PV panels, whatever . . . they ALL produce some impact; not only in their "manufacture" or procurement, but also many WHEN used, and many AFTER they are used. Nothing is exempt from that. Once we all realize AND accept this, it becomes very obvious that there are two things we can ALL do to minimize our impact / extend the useable life of resources we have. First: Minimize energy we use no matter where it came from . . . insulate better, drive a different vehicle if you can, walk, take a bus, wear a sweater . . . tons of little things we can all do . . that don't really change our lives, just make it a little different. Easy to do if you feel the need to. Second: Use energy forms that cause less overall pollution / consequences by their very nature. Dirtiest ones should be avoided at all costs if possible . . nukes, coal, oil . . all produce some signifigant impact on a large scale . . acid rain, trace heavy metals, waste we have NO idea how to "dispose" of. Wind, PV, hydro power, biomasss ( ethanol, methane ) . . all produce consequences too . . but can all be relatively easily mitigated / minimized. And they ALL can produce more energy than is consumed in "making" them. One investment initially; and these things can produce lots of power for many, many years with virtually NO further consequences. Brazil and ethanol . . I don't have many facts about it; but did hear about it many years ago. An amazingly good, simple idea from a "third world" country. They had FAR more insight into the big picture by proposing such a thing than any administration here could ever think of. Believe the whole premise was to use sugar cane tailings that result from the existing sugar industry; to ferment into alcohol. Using an existing " waste " product to produce fuel / reduce need for oil. An investment ( energy-wise ) into the equipment etc once; can "produce" lots of energy for years and years using what is now "garbage". If you think about it, the "source" of the energy in such a process is . . . solar. Sunlight / photosynthesis turning water / CO2 into sugars etc; which ferment into alcohol very easily. Not unlike making wine / beer. Not only that; but alcohol is a very simple compound . . under realistic conditions can burn quite cleanly . . unlike the chemical "soup" that existing gasoline is . . producing all kinds of compounds in the burning process. So what makes things such as Brazil / ethanol happen ? ? ? Mandates via gov'ts / laws. I'm no fan of them; but if they do not produce such changes; the changes will NOT happen. There's more money to be made drilling for oil than fermenting garbage. THAT is the bottom line in determining energy policies / sources . . not the environmental issues behind them . . . Believe it was a Canadian gentleman who said: " If the people lead, the leaders will follow." . .. . think about it . . . Bob...See MoreAC Issues and Repair/Replacement Quotes
Comments (15)Well, after MANY, MANY load calculations, inspections, and load calculations, I have finally signed a contract. I wanted to post my decision back here for others to use in the future. I ended up going with an HVAC contractor that I have used for a number of years (about 12 years on three different houses). His pricing was middle of the road to slightly higher than most, but I do trust his expertise and his work. SECOND FLOOR SYSTEM After careful inspection of ductwork in both my attic (second floor) system and my main (first/basement) system, it was found that my returns were in adequate for the second floor system. He has proposed to add two returns from our central upstairs hallways to compliment the individual returns in each bedroom. Additionally, he recommended dampering all the runs and replacing two of the longest runs with a larger diameter duct. Additionally, he is replacing the leaking Carrier coil and condenser with a TRANE 2.5T XR15 (4TTR5030) A/C unit and 4TXCB031 coil. He will reuse the existing lineset (and flush, wash, rinse, and vacuum procedure). He assures me the lineset is in good shape and correct in size. We will also resuse the existing thermostat that currently runs the system (a carrier). He will also resuse the 6" Aprilaire media cabinet. Further, he will seal all ductwork with a brush on mastic. He is doing all this for $3774 which includes a 10 year parts and 3 year labor warranty. MAIN SYSTEM - FIRST FLOOR/BASEMENT The net outcome of all the inspections for this system was that (1) my A/C unit was oversized (2) my ductwork was poorly sealed and not dampered (3) I needed a "wrap" added to my furnace along with a second filter to allow adequate return air flow to the furnace. The other determination was this furnace was in poor condition and the blower motor needed replacement and the furnace did not burn cleanly and efficiently. It was repairable, however, I decided to replace it and pair my main system with a very new high efficiency VS furnace to take advantage of a 2 stage A/C unit for this level that could help drive out the high humidity levels in the house better. What I am purchasing for this system is: Trane 95% XV95 Furnace variable speed, 2 stage heating (TUHMC100ACV4A) Trane 4.0T XL20i dual compressor A/C unit 4TZCC008CC3HCA coil Trane Comfortlink II Thermostat (2) 4" pleated media filters (along with a furnace "wrap" for return air) Trane humidifer Dampering all runs for main system and balance all registers with CFM meter Sealing all ducts and returns with paint on mastic to prevent air leakage New Lineset This system qualifies for $500 federal tax credit and $400 Duke Energy credit 10 year parts (12 on compressor) / 3 years labor $11,225 In the end, I think we will have a system that not only works, but hopefully increases our comfort in the home. I'd like to thank everyone who helped me gather information and pointed me in the right direction to asking good questions and getting the real issues with this system (particularly Tigerdunes and Baldloonie). I doubt I would have made as wise a choice without your help. The systems will be installed in (3) days. (1) day for the upstairs unit and (2) days for the downstairs system. I'll post after the system is up and running with my opinions on how it works. Michael...See MoreWeil-McLain Boiler - On The Blitz??
Comments (12)The tech came yesterday and it seems all has been fixed. We did once again have some sludge build-up on the nozzle so he changed out the nozzle and another (oil) strainer that he said looked like it had not been changed in awhile. As mentioned, he changed the nozzle and put in a "W" nozzle. He said the "W" will work better if we continue to encounter the sludge issue. He changed two electrodes whose points seemed to have flattened a bit, changed the furnace fan setting and the filters/strainers. I have to say that even before the shuttering of the boiler last week, we still heard the boiler kick on, but not as loud...now we cannot even hear it kick on. The boiler seems to shut off sooner, but the forced air seems to stay on with warm air longer. Seems efficiency has been tended to here. Looking for feedback on the following suggestions though.... 1) he said the furnace fan was set at 200, so he turned it down to 180. He said anything higher than 180 just creates steam and at 180 it will be more efficient. When we first moved in 6 years ago, we had complained that the forced air seemed to be "cold" after the boiler shut off, so that is why it was set to 200...I think. Opinions on what is the most efficient furnace fan temp setting? 2) he suggest we upgrade our filter to something slightly larger since we continue to have the sludge problem even after getting about 35 gallons sucked out in late July. The last time we we had the furnace serviced with changing nozzle and filters was 7/30/08, so we did not even get 6months our of it this time. 3) he suggests we put a diesel conditioner or STR-2 in the tank next time we get oil delivered to try to break down some of the sludge. He did say that we should not add it too often since it can errode the tank. I have read the same thing. I did find a company FuelRight, although I do not think they sell direct to consumers, that had a "study" that they performed on the different oil additives (See Link). This is the one thing I am unsure of here, so ANY suggestions on an oil additive would be helpful. The tech said we should get a minimum of 20 years out of our boiler as long as it is maintained properly. Seems we made the right move by bringing in a new company/tech and will stick with him in the future. We are extremely happy with the work he performed. Thanks again for all of your help. Here is a link that might be useful: Additive...See Moreearthworm
