Help! More New Plates: Need Tablescape Ideas Now (pics)

I won 5 of these hand painted Japanese Chikaramachi salad-type plates at auction recently. I really like them, although I'm still not sure what to use them with. I'd love to hear your ideas as to which, if any, dinner plates they'd look best with, as well as ideas for placemat & napkin colors and accessories. I do have two old (Pre-WW2) Japanese dolls I can use with the tablescape. I'd love to hear any and all suggestions.

Here is one of the plates with several of the dinner plates I have now. Oh, and I do have some nice, hand-painted chopsticks:

1) Navy & White Print plate.

I think it looks nice until you move the Japanese plate to the side and then ?????

2) Here with my green & copper plates. I don't think the copper edges look that good with gold on plates, although the copper is a metallic paint and the gold isn't:

3) Here it is with the simple white plates, on one of the only possibilities for placemats I have at the moment. I can pick up different ones, if needed, once I decide on the dinner plates:

I also have these red placemats and the fine linen-look napkins in soft green I can use:

I'm not that creative, but "I know what I like" :)

First of all, the dolls are simply beautiful.

I agree with you, the plates look really good with the border on the dark blue dishes, they're probably still fine when they're juxtaposed, I'm just not as sure.

They look great with the white dishes, w/red placemats and green nampkins. That would be my favorite.

I like the white best and the blue would be my second choice. It's hard to tell if the rim is gold or peachy. If it's gold then you could play that up, but if it's more a beach, I'd try to emphasize the blues.

Oh, this is fun to get to see all the pretty stacked plates on one post, will be so nice to have them in the albums. I have no idea why all but one of my pics won't allow us to click to enlarge them, I posted them the same way I always do. Maybe Photobucket has changed something, who knows. Tam, I was glad to see you using your stacked silver tray since I just got one of those. Your arrangements are really nice on it. I just saw white and red birds at Dollar Tree, think I'd better go back and get a few, I like your's on the plates. Dreamgoddess, love all your pretty pink ornies on yours. DD, I too love your bird perched on the top of yours, and using the napkins was a good way to make them just right for Halloween. jrzgurl, Both of your's look really nice. I really love that black, white, silver theme. Betty, all your items look so pretty and cheerful with that little scarecrow on top. Kathleen, I'd love to have your stacked plates with all those yummy goodies at my house right now! I'd be happy to "clean them up" for you. ;o) Karen, this is turning into a really fun post. You have so many neat pieces to work with! I like all of your tables. My least favorite part is all of the cooking, so you're waaay ahead of the game by getting to have leftovers! I love your cornucopia. I found one already decorated beautifully yesterday, inexpensive AND 40% off and left it there. What was I thinking?!?! The colors of your turkey with the counucopia are very pretty. I really like it. Your wrought-iron turkey, the reversible placemats, the darling turkey spreaders, I could go on, but.... My favorite of all is your inherited turkey tureen and all of the accessories that go with it. What a treasure you have. The very first Thanksgiving pieces that I bought were salad/soup bowls to match the dinner plates in your second picture. I bought the only 4 they had and when I got them home, one was cracked. :o( I will set it at my place and use a clear bowl in it. I've done the sippy cups many times!! What a gorgeous home! And I LOVE the fabric. If the chairs are good quality and comfortable, I'd definitely do it. Twelve yds is probably not enough for four chairs, but people has posted examples here of mixing fabrics on chairs, and it can look great. For example, use the japan-inspired fabric on the backs of chair, and use another fabric for heavy-use cushions and inside back. Once you add a coffee table and rug, I think the scale will look more reasonable. Re: bar for six, you could roughly double the depth of the bar and add a seat at either end. Of course, that would involve some cost, but not much if choose e.g. wood as the top piece. Depending on how much room you need to walk behind the bar, you might even be able to do something larger, with a curve to it.

I mentioned the borders to dh this morning and he likes the idea. Each of the long sides is about 14'. The shot side is about 10'. The other short side is there the 'bridge' is. I'll look at it tonight with dh and see what we can work out. As far as the layout of the living room. As the furniture is now. Looking at the back of the chairs, you are stading by the dining table and behind you, the kitchen. That opening is about 10' wide. Still looking at the back of the chairs, next to the chairs is the couch. And in front of it is the fireplace and the stairs that lead to the upstairs. The couch is about 12 feet long. I would love if it could put the couch where you could see the back, but it is just too big. We did every arrangement we could think of when we first got it so that we wouldn't have to close off the door way (the blank wall that is now behind the couch). Just to give you a little background of the house. When you stand looking at the back of the chairs, you are standing where the carport used to be. We added about 40' to the end of the house about 6 years ago, doing most of the work ourselves. So that is why the layouts ended up a little strange. The now TV area used to be the dining room and kitchen.

Thanks! These plates are actually a type of Lusterware, from what I've just read. The rims of them are a pearly, non-metallic gold color.

The japanese dolls are simply gorgeous. I really like option #1 and the white dinner plate with your new salad plates. You could consider using a gold/yellow from the salad plate in the placemat if you use the option with the plain white. Maybe even a floral print? Or even red but silk like fabric? It feels like the dishes are so rich and elegant and the red placemat is a little more casual, in the picture.

I am sure whichever option you chose, it will look lovely. The new plates are beautiful.

Those dolls are lovely, and from the pictures, it looks like both have a peach color on them so I'd really try to use that color to unify your tablescape. So far, I'm liking picture #4. I'm no expert though, so hopefully the others can give you more options. Those new salad plates are really lovely. Luvs

I love your new plates with the blue/white plates. I think you could use those plates and play up the rusty red in the flowers on the Japanese plate. In my humble opinion, I WOULD juxtapose something more casual for the placemats, just to change the texture (satiny or silky for the lusterware plates). It depends on the effect you wish to create but I like lots of contrast!

Thanks for all your great suggestions . . . I really appreciate them! I'll start looking for some different placemats, and napkins and see what I can find to play up the plates more.
