Which grout color for ming marble hex?
Comments (10)tking, hope it's not too late but I have a picture I can post for you now. I'm very happy with the way the two tiles work together. We ended up using platinum grout on the ming hex floor tiles and white on the white subway tiles. The room is very bright from a horizontal window above the shower/tub area. The brightness of the white subway tiles is very pleasing to me. There is a large tree outside the window. The green of the floor tiles ties nicely with the green from the tree. Then everything else is white. Interestingly, in photos the floor looks darker than it does in person. Comments (77)Hi cv2014, I still love the look of our Semihandmade walnut, to me it's very warm. We briefly looked into having Semihandmade make panels for the side and the back of the island, but we wanted a more substantial edge and it just seemed like we'd have better luck getting it to all work out if we hired a finish carpenter to do the job. We're very happy with how it turned out. You can go to almost any good lumber store and purchase a full sheet of walnut veneer for not a lot of $$s. Depending on where it's used, it could be ok if it doesn't match perfectly with the Semihandmade walnut. The corner cabinet has a filler piece, I think it was around 4 inches, that gives enough clearance so that the cabinet door can open without worrying about having it hit the door to the right. In my case I think I was also concerned about clearance so it wouldn't hit the oven handle as well. That was solved by making the pull-out next to the over slightly wider than originally planned. These are the older Ikea cabinet style, so I'm not sure if the new style has the same kind of corner cabinet or not. Good luck with your planning!...See MoreNeed Ideas for Vanity Backsplash and Shower/Tub Niche
Comments (16)I like the look of a simple backsplash using the countertop material rather than using a mosaic there. We used a 6" tall splash instead of 4". We just finished our master bath last fall and we used the Emser Lucente Lazzaro for one shower wall and the niches. Lazzaro has a lot of light greenish-gray-marble colors in it. Lucente comes in a lot of colors. My local showroom only had 2 colors on display, but the Emser website shows a lot more options. If you use Lucente I have one suggestion regarding installation. I don't know if this will occur with a different color, but with the Lazzaro color, there were some marble pieces that had black dots in them. That was fine as long as these dots occurred randomly, but it just so happened that some of them lined up in one area when being installed. The installer was so close to it that he didn't realize. His helper was standing further back and noticed. While things were still wet, he cut out the offending pieces with a utility knife and replaced them with a piece from another sheet. Just an installation detail I thought I'd mention. Our colors were: Emser Uptown Sugar Hill for field tile in 12 x 24" (it's a light gray/concrete color with some variation), Lucente Lazzaro linear mosaic for one wall and niches, QDI The Rock 3" x 3" floor tile (charcoal gray), marble countertop and tub surround with marble splashes, white vanity cabinet and tub skirt panels, a large linen cabinet stained in a medium brown tone and some floating shelves also stained, and existing wood floors. We thought a white and gray color plan might be too cold so we incorporated the greenish-gray mosaic and the stained cabinet, plus a teak bench in shower to bring in some warm elements....See MoreMarble or soapstone for shower curb/threshold/vanity top?
Comments (19)Thanks, all! @john3582, I lobbied hard for the cross handles on the sink, but lost that one to function over form too, so they will be levers. But the shower will have cross handles, so there's that. Thanks for the suggestions of granite/manufactured stone--I will go check those out this week. We haven't had water staining problems with the Barroca soapstone in our kitchen (though have other issues with how soft it is--I got a quote from the same people who installed it and asked for something harder, so they suggested Stormy Black) but will also dig into that a bit more too. That is one of my worries about marble, though. Using a wood threshold is a backup plan, but I've had trouble finding something that matches our flooring (rift sawn white oak). Our existing bathroom has a basic big box red oak threshold but it's so clearly a different wood that it makes me crazy to look at--I'd rather it be something different entirely than almost but not quite match. I will look again to see if I can find some white oak options that are closer, though. (We are also having the wood in other areas of the house refinished at the end of this project, so could wait and ask the flooring people to do it--I think our GC mainly needs to know now to see if/how it affects tiling.)...See MoreRelated Professionals
