Has anyone done anything to cut there fuel consumption?

There are several things to do to cut back on gas.Like car pooling,keeping the tires inflated to spec,slowing down,staying home,walking,etc.I was just wondering if anyone is doing anything to save at the pump?

I am currently able to bike/walk to work, because the distance is just under three miles. It's not that hard, you just make up your mind and do it. But my wife, who usually takes a bus to work, has been forced to use the car for scheduled appointments with doctors and physical therapists for an arthritic neck, so our use of the family car continues to be significant.

I have two vehicles: An old one that I like and is suited to winter conditions, and the other is newer with less ground clearance. The old one gets 17 to 20 MPG while the newer one can achieve 30 MPH highway. I have shifted the bulk of my miles to the newer one, and use the old one only when necessary. Also, I try to combine trips and leave the cars parked as much as possible.

I'm not really worried about the expense. I feel it's worth it and I don't believe it will be all that much. The largest expense will be for the posts and there is a building salvage yard in our area. As far as the way it looks, I feel it will look just fine. A practical solution to a really bothersome problem. softmentor, thank you for the info on the pool netting. I'll look into it. What I've been considering is either aviary wire or galvanized hardware cloth. I've used both materials when I had outdoor aviaries. I used to breed budgerigars. Most people call them parakeets. I've used mostly 1/2 inch aviary wire. It lasted for years, I can't really remember how long. It's been a long time. They now make it in a plastic coated version that is supposed to to be impervious to weather. The galvanized hardware cloth is sturdier, stronger, more ridged. As I envision it, I see tall (12 foot) posts covered with netting or wire on all sides and on top with a large door for access. I will need to seal the bottom against small animals. I will pre-run water piping to the area. I intend to plant my trees in two or three tree clusters, planting each tree in the cluster 12 to 18 inches apart. This way I maximize the number of trees I can place in any given area and polinization is improved. I know this works because I have been planting this way for the last 18 years. Burners in a row? Has anyone done this?

First of all, I loathe elevated burner grates because a pot can slip off those really easily when you're moving things around and there's not much space in the front. Also, you are constantly leaning in and over pots on burners set in the center like that. I think this is one really bad design -- not intrinsically but how this is installed. It looks like a catering set up and it wouldn't surprise me if there was a full range in there somewhere else. As for burners in a row, why not? But at least choose Wolf wok burners with flat grates (or any modular with flat grates). The loss with this arrangement is the ability to move things across the stove easily. However, another issue with this arrangement is no bridge -- i.e. no griddle use. With the functionality of a 22K "wok" burner, the idea is to be able to use a 14" braiser or a 20 quart stockpot. That's nearly the diameter of the unit. So care must be taken. This kitchen is in a NYC neighborhood with a lot of private townhouses that are prized as family residences because they are near all the private schools. You're in the 6-8 million house range here. Has anyone done Amway?

We knew someone who tried to get us involved a few years ago. We did go to one of the introductory meetings. The others are right when they describe the people involved as pushy. That was our experience also. The Amway people seem especially pushy. I've had people ask if I wanted to sell for some other companies. Once I said no, that was the end of it. The Amway guy kept trying even after we said no. Amway made these huge promises of how you could quit your day job & become rich selling Amway. While there may be a very few people that achieve that, most don't. The ones who really make the money are those who are able to recruit people to work under them. That is especially true in a company like Amway that's been around for so long. I do know several people who sell Mary Kay & Pampered Chef & make some extra money to help out every month. Of all the people I know who sell for various companies, I don't know anyone who has actually been able to replace their job income with sales from something like this. There is usually a monthly minimum sales volume that must be maintained. It's in the fine print of the contract. If you are only going to use these products personally & won't be selling to friends/family, you will likely end up paying a lot for these items. There are plenty of alternatives to Amway products. moving plants in your own garden is approved.. as they are totally tempered to your gardens weather ... after all.. they have been there all winter ... subject to the above mentioned walking in your sodden soil.. and turning it into concrete thru compaction ... as to plants from your local sale.. where did they come from .. and are they hardened off ... if they came from a local greenhouse.. which has already been hardening them off to local weather... they are probably ready to plant ... but it wouldnt hurt to just give them a protected week or 3.. to settle down ... full bright shade ... protected from wild cold temp swings ... its easier to protect a small collection of pots all sitting together.. rather than all over the yard .... but.. if they were trucked in from God knows where ... but presumably a warmer clime .... then its your job to harden them off ... it always helps.. if you include your location in your fact scenario .... ken ps: random warm DAYS .. arent as important in the equation... as random really COLD nights ... so dont focus on day temps.. look for the potential of night temps .... its rare that there is a mid day frost or freeze this time of year ...

Have changed my driving habits a bit, lay off the gas pedal a bit, check the air pressure in the tires more often and cut back playing pick up hockey at 1 rink which is around 30 miles away!!

I recently bought new tires for my car and did a fair amount of research to determine which had the lowest rolling resistance. Low rolling resistance means it takes less fuel to overcome the resistance of the tires.

In the past, I would have cared less and bought tires based more on their performance characteristics or price. At $3/gallon and up, though, it didn't make sense to me to buy tires which would ding me for a couple of miles per gallon every time I drove. That adds up to a lot over tens of thousands of miles. Haven't put enough miles on the car yet to get a good read on their effect on fuel mileage, though.
