Which way is best to fit a new vanity?

We are doing just a cosmetic update on our master bath. We decided to go with a bigger vanity. The porcelain glass like floor tile comes up the walls and butts against the old vanity.

Should we remove the 2 tiles on either side and cut them to fit? Or, as DH thinks we should do, notch out the sides of the vanity?

This was a custom order vanity and cost around a thousand dollars. I hate to cut into it but don't know how hard it would be to take off the tiles that have been there for 15 years without sheetrock damage.

And how would we get them cut? Instead of buying a tile saw for two tiles, can you take them someplace to get them cut?

There has been lots of heated discussion over this topic so far.Thanks.

Can't you just put the vanity on top of the tile (and shim the "open" area of tile) rather than trying to cut one into the other?

I guess I didn't explain it well. I am talking about the wall not floor tile. The tile goes up the wall like a base board. If we just push the vanity cabinet up against the tile, there will be a gap the thickness of the tile on both sides all the way up. It won't be flush against the wall. We think it would look better flush.

Hi Winston, I've found it much easier to start Impatiens right where you want them to grow. Especially this late in the season. In fact here in z7 NC, it's quicker to start them in ground or planter, rather than starting them inside and transplanting them. Just pre-soak the dirt you're planting in, sprinkle the seeds on, and slightly rewater. Then keep them from completely drying out for 1-2 weeks and you're all set. A shady area works best of course. I find Impatiens seeds the easiest of all to germinate. I save my seeds from year to year - haven't bought new plants in over 10 years. Just pop the seed pod when ready, put them on a newspaper or something, and scrape out the seeds in a day when the pods are wilted a bit. Save them in a ziploc (just the seeds - no pods or they'll all mold) till next year. I usually get plenty of volunteers from year to year as well. Hope this helps! Alana

After reading the posts, I had already tried Sprayway, Stainless Steel Magic, Mr Clean Erasers(once), vinegar and water. But never Pledge. As I only had the orange Pledge I thought what the ****, I'll try it. I used the Micro Fiber towel ( Yes the ones from Costco for cars). It was wonderful and quick. My French Door frig, my dishwasher and range look great and all in five minutes. I call my husband Shrek as he never thinks about using the handles, but now I have a quick fix. Thanks to those that suggested it.

6 lb is the limit for the old work plastic box. See the last sentence at the last page of http://www.carlon.com/FAQs/FAQ-ZipBoxes.pdf I plan to mount the light directly onto the stud without any box. Then I will not worry it would fall down someday. Is there any concern in terms of wiring?

I'd try removing the tiles first. If they don't come off easily, then you can go with plan B: trimming the vanity.

How they attached the tiles will affect how hard it is to remove them. We pulled some tiles off a wall above a whirlpool tub to enlarge the shower, then cut and put them back on, and it worked fine. OTOH, when we pulled down our kitchen backsplash, it completely destroyed the drywall.

I cut a few tiles at Lowe's once (I needed to miter cut some chair rail, and the blade on my tile saw wasn't big enough to cut all the way through the thickness). They did it for free. I had bought the tiles there, but if you just showed up with a tile or two needing straight cuts, they'd probably do it for you.

weedyacres - thanks for the reply. I would like to try to see if we can remove the tiles because I think it would be easier to do it that way and would look better. It is still being debated.

If you're up for a tool purchase, you can do this yourself with good success. You can buy a roto-zip, angle attachment for it, and a diamond saw blade. Mark the tile and cut it.

I'm working on a backsplash with 2x2 glass tile insets. I found that I had cemented a tile in that should have been cut for one of the 2x2's. I cut it right on the wall with the roto-zip. The only thing is that it's real dusty work, so you'll want to isolate that room from the rest of the house. Wear googles, dust mask and hearing protection.

Before you go pulling off tiles, think about this:

Purchase quarter round moulding and tack it to the back edge of the vanity or the wall. It can end at the top of the tile or can be shaved enough to allow for the depth of the tile and then go all the way to the floor. This piece can be painted to match the wall or stained to match the vanity. The overhang of the vanity top will cover the top edge of the moulding.

If this was my situation I would shave the moulding, nail it to the wall, caulk the edge against the wall and paint it the wall color.
