Waterproof my Tub Surround? How large for my shower pan?

The Tile Guys are on their way, probably tomorrow, and I've gotten more than one answer on whether it is necessary to waterproof my Hardi TUB SURROUND (using an anti-fracture/waterproofing membrane like REDGUARD or by some other means). This surround is for tub only, shower is separate. Redguard requires 2 coats for waterproofing, therefore applying it would cause a delay between coats. You know contractors don't like for YOU to slow them down, although the reverse is not always true. What are your thoughts? Do I need it and how do we do it?

In my rectangular shower, is it necessary to dig out for the pan to go underneath the corner bench, even though it will be boxed in? Is it wasted labor to put a shower pan under a closed box, or configure the pan to stop AT the box.

I can post pictures for any who need them, AS SOON AS I LEARN TO POST. My last attempt was not successful. I needed answers first, really quickly, so I am sending this on without pics.

Bill and Mongo, are you out there?
