Serpentine belt and water pump

Last nite my wife called and said the car

was hard to steer and the battery light was on.

So I had to go get her. Just as I figured belt was broken.

We parked the car in a Walmart parking lot and left it.

I have to go get it today. I called Walmart and asked

how much to put the belt on if I go get one.

They said they don't do that type of work.

But he also said I mite not want to drive it cause

the belt also turned the water pump. But we weren't sure.

It was very cold last night and the short distance I had to

drive it to get to Walmart it didn't have time to overheat.

I couldn't drive it home last nite cause the headlights would

have killed the battery fast. I figured daytime would be ok.

I was gonna just go over and charge up the battery real good

and drive it home to fix here. But now I don't know.

Does that belt drive the water pump?

I can watch the temperature guage as I drive it home.

Under normal circumstances it is a 45 minute trip.

And I have to cross a mountain.

Ok to drive home, or fix it there,

or drive it somewhere close by and have it fixed.

1997 Ford Escort 4 door sedan.

It's 1:20 CST and I have to leave in about an hour to go get it.

Hope I can get an answer before then.

Ok, according to the belt diagram on the AutoZone website,
the belt doesn't drive the water pump. So I'm safe there.

Now, which one of these belts would you recommend.

What engine is it? Basicly open the hood and look for the water pump. 45 minute drive is a long time to drive a car without an alternator. Most of the time something caused the belt to go flying off like a siezed alternator or tensioner pulley.

Chevrolet and Ford will survive the Toyota onslaught as long as they can keep their repair costs about one half's of Toyota and Honda... $365 for a good 2 to 3 hours labor including $100 or so in parts.. sounds almost fair to me.. but I should have stayed in this field...

FWIW - Just changed the tensioner on my 1991 2.2L Cavalier. Step 1: Disconnect Battery. Step 2: Remove Belt (15mm wrench clockwise to remove tension) Step 3: Remove Power steering pump. Remove small bolt on back side of power steering pump (next to hose with clamp)Use a box-end wrench or one of those ratchet box-end wrenches. Next, there are 3 bolts in the front behind the pulley(13mm). There are holes in the pulley specifically for the purpose of removing these bolts. I used a magnet to pull the bolts out after loostened. You should now be able to rock the top of the pump toward the firewall. Be careful to not break the plastic top. If you have to pry it, do it on the metal part. Step 4: Remove alternator. Remove all bolts holding the alternator in place. It should just be laying there (Upper bracket removed). Step 5: Remove belt tensioner assembly plate. Remove four 15mm bolts that hold the plate on the engine block. Mine were on pretty tight so I had to use a breaker bar to get em off. Re-assembly: Step 6: Compare new tensioner assembly with old one. They should match. Attach plate to engine block with four 15mm bolts. Make sure they're tight. You don't want this to come loose. Step 7: Re-align power steering pump to 3 holes in tensioner plate and screw in the 3 bolts (don't tighten yet). Now here's the hard part - carefully take the small bolt that goes in the back of the pump assembly and get it started with your fingers (the 2 holes should be aligned). Tighten all 4 bolts. Step 8: Alternator - Re-install the long bolt and nut that goes in the bottom of the alternator but don't tighten. You may have to loosen the lower alternator bracket so the two holes align. Let the alternator swing towards the engine. This will make it easier to get the belt on. Step 9: Serpentine belt install. If new belt, make sure it's the same length as the old one. Route the belt like the diagram sticker. The alternator is the last pulley it will go over. If you can get someone to help you here, it's a lot easier. Turn the 15mm bolt on the tensioner pulley clockwise until there's enough slack to slip the belt over the alternator pulley. While keeping the tension off the pulley, replace the other 2 bolts/upper alternator bracket. Slowly let the the tensioner spring back. Replace and tighten the rest of the alternator/bracket bolts.

Your engine: 1993, 2.2 L, 4cy, 114,000 KM (70,836 Miles) Wow! That is low mileage for year 1993. At one time, my wife had a 1989 Plymouth Sundance (US version). I've got a repair manual for the '89 2.2 and 2.5 L 4cy, plus the 3.0 L V6 engines. I believe that the layout of the 2.2 and 2.5 L engines remained about the same up through '93. I'll be quoting from the '89 manual. Drive belt: From what I see, the water pump is driven by an accessory belt, not the timing belt. (The water pump on the 3.0 L V6 is driven by the timing belt.) There are 2 to 3 accessory belts on the 2.2 and 2.5 L engines; 3 belts when equipped with an air conditioner compressor. However, the water pump housing is behind the timing belt so that will likely have to come off. The water pump on this engine is unusual in that it has a 2 piece housing. The book labels the back part, "Housing" and the front part, "Body assembly". These two halves are held together with 9 screws; a gasket is between the halves. Here is a potential for a leak. The tigntening torque specified for these 9 screws is 12 Nm (105 in-lb). The water pump assembly is fastened to the engine with 3 screws at the top and one screw much lower down. [Torque for the top 3 screws is 30 Nm (250 in-lb) and the bottom, 68 Nm (50 ft-lb)] You could try checking those 9 screws for tightness if you can get at those without disturbing the timing belt and sprockets. However, the drawing in my book doesn't look promising. I think the intermediate sprocket (associated with the timing belt) covers 2 of the 9 screws.

I think that much of the bill is largely labor (at a new car dealership) and charges for tools and facilities. Check out a repair manual to see what is involved to change these two items. The water pump is probably ok right now, but most do not last the life of the engine and will require one changeout before 130,000 miles. Therefore, it does make sense to change it too while the mechanic is into the engine. There is an element of liability when changing the timing belt: One screwup here and the engine can be damaged. One other item you should consider is to change the timing belt tensioner when the belt is replaced.

I used a 10/30/50 battery charger for about 90 minutes
and charged the battery for the drive home.
Drove home normally and the temperature guage never
went out of the usual operating range.
I put the charger back on it when I got home.
I took it off for the night but will put it back tomorrow.

Not really sure what engine is in this car.
Never bothered to check. AutoZone site says 4cyl 122 P 2.0L SFI
Car has about 140k miles on it. And the belt finally breaks.
I figure it is due for hoses too. Put a timing belt in at 100k.
It has been a really good reliable car.

It's a Mazda engine. There all much the same, and the timing belt doesn't run the water pump, alternator or anything else.

It sounds like the belt that runs the power steering pump and the alternator is slipping or running slow - that might be because of a loose belt or because the bearings are seizing in either of those components.

There may be a separate belt for the water pump and the aircon compressor (I don't know), hence they are not affected. I'm not entirely sure, but I don't think it has a serpentine belt.

Huh??
I changed a shredded serpentine belt yesterday.
Went around the alternator, PS pump, and A/C compressor.
And it went around the crank pulley and two idler pulleys.
Pulling the shredded belt out of all that
and putting a new belt in solved the problem.

Used to own an old Escort wagon
that the timing belt turned the water pump.
Kinda figured maybe Ford still used the same setup.

I think we are on the same scenario. Last month that actually was my problem. I had ordered online for the Water Pump Housing just to keep that problem isolated.
