A small San Diego company is playing a big role in reducing air pollution in Beijing as China clears the air for the 2008 Olympics

IN THREE YEARS, when athletes from around the world descend on Beijing for the 2008 Olympics, they can thank a San Diego company for the cleaner air filling their lungs. The same holds true for Shanghai, host of soccers World Cup in 2010.

The cleaner air will be due in large part to a fuel additive produced by Ethos Environmental Inc., near the Mexico border in San Diego.

Ethos EnvironmentalÂs fuel reformulating products reduce emissions by burning fuel more completely, which improves fuel mileage. Exhaust is essentially unburned fuel, wasted fuel, so when the fuel is used more completely the engine delivers better mileage from every tank. Efficient fuel use also means improved engine performance, because a more complete combustion process obtains increased power from each engine revolution.

In the last decade hundreds of millions of miles in road tests have been conducted. Test after test, Ethos FR products have proven to reduce engine exhaust emissions by 30% and more, including measurable reductions in the emissions of hydrocarbons (HC), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and sooty exhaust or particulate matter (PM). All of these emissions are highly toxic. As a result, fuel mileage increases have been significant, ranging from 7% to 19% fleet we.

Ethos Environmental uses a opacity meter, a detection device for diesel vehicles that measures the percentage of opacity (light obstructed form passage through an exhaust smoke plume), to demonstrate dramatic reductions in emissions. In more that 1,000 heavy-duty diesel vehicles treated (a motor vehicle having a manufacturerÂs maximum gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) greater than 6,000 pounds), emissions were lowered by as much as 90%. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) recommended practice SAE J1667 "Snap Acceleration Smoke Test Procedure" for heavy-duty diesel powered vehicles was used. Attached are samples of opacity test sheets, taken from diesel-powered engines, contrasting the positive results after using Ethos FR.

You can get all your friends and neighbors to have this product in their cars and just like the 1,000 mile per gallon carburetor that was BANNED by the oil companies, you can thumb your nose at the local Exxon station!
This guy claims a fuel savings of 7 to 19 percent. So it's probably closer to the mid range. So we'll take the average of his claims. 13 percent savings. My Expedition gets 19 MPG on the highway. So we'll add 13% increase. WOW WEE! It'll get 21.4 MPG! My Dakota gets 14 MPG. So add 13% and I'll get 15.8! If this product sells for under $3 I might consider it. Otherwise the gas is cheaper. And if I have to add it every time I fill up.....

OK, it's easy to get excited about something when there is no apparent reason to suspect that it may be a scam. Gasoline and Diesel fuel are actually both blends of lots of different hydrocarbon chemicals. Thats just one of the reasons we have computer controls that provide instant adjustment of air fuel ratio's and timing curves. Oh, and yes today's diesels are computer contolled we simply have to wait for the fleet to age and pass before the majority of diesels are computer controlled.

IMO, no additive dumped in a fuel tank is going to make a significant improvement in the efficiency, and cleanliness of the older designs. No additive is going to improve today's automobiles.

What you described about getting people into this "investment" has all of the appearance of a classic pyramid scheme. The only guarantee's about that are a few people will get some money, and some of them will return it (or at least some of it) under the threat of prosecution. Many will lose their "investment". Pyramid schemes are illegal, and for good reason. If there was any merit to this product, they would have no short list of people (with big bucks) interested in investing, and they wouldn't be looking for the "little guy".

Hogwash. People drive the economy with demand. If people wanted cleaner more efficient America they would demand and get it. People hold the money and the big business wants it, to include the oil companies. The absolute primary reason we dont have a better option to power our world is because we demand the high performance, gas guzzling gigantic automobiles and trucks to haul our two children and all thier expensive toys. We are spoiled rotten to the core and blow energy resources like there is no tomorrow. But lawn mowers are not the way to clean air for our country and definitely not the great energy wasters of our time. America needs to learn how to go back to simpler forms of entertainment and learn contentment with fewer energy wasting toys. Get back on track with fuel efficient transportation and CLEAN UP THOSE SMOG LOVING FACTORIES! BUT what will it cost us besides money and a few toys? Well for one thing we will no longer have a problem with illegal immigrants, as there will be no more factories to leave us smog, no more jobs to fight over, and eventually no more America because we are willing and ready to keep buying products made all around the world where they dont give a tinkerers DAMN about the ecology, air polution, water and land polution, or worker safety, and especially dont give a damn about you Americans or your children! Keep on buying those cheap products specially designed to run in America, except most of us are going to be clawing around to find a way to buy food instead and only the elite rich will be buying. That is until the little guy finally gets fed up with being bottom feeders to the elite and they revolt and take their country back. Pity our poor children as we are rapidly digging them a hole they will never dig out of. America is becoming a cesspool and so many of us are not fighting it, just jumping in and swimming along with the rest of the lemmings! Good luck!

Hey Don.... thanks for the compliment!: "..you have one hell of a way to play with words..." I practice a lot.... you're right - social equality or at least working towards social equality is important... however, it has been demonstrated in the past, and even currently in some countries, that "forced social equality" or socialism does not work... an economy can not support it. Why?.. because there are not enough "rich" people to give to all the "poor"... if you take all the money and distribute it to everyone, then everyone will still be poor... just a little less poor, but still in the "poor" bracket.... so what's the answer?... Canada thinks it has it (as do several other european countries), but the reality is that our health-care sucks: I just heard today that the average treatment wait time in Ontario is 16 weeks.... 4 months!... I could be dead by then!... so could my kid!... sure, fast response of private systems is much better but not affordable for all.... the answer is somewhere in the middle I guess.... not sure if it is practically possible tough... I agree with you with respect to children.... as far as I am concerned, there should be zero reservations with respect to providing care etc. for children, senior, and disabled citizens - reason being that they can not provide for themselves.... But welfare is much more than providing for those that can't provide for themselves... it's for people who don't want to provide for themselves.... this issue gets even more silly when you think about the fact that Canada has a very robust welfare system, and yet there are homeless people on the street!... how can that be?... all they have to do is walk into a welfare office, and they will get a free place to stay, and a small pay-cheque (for food, beer, and booze)... free!... so why would these people live on the street?... because they choose to do so.... similarly then, there are those who choose to live on welfare, yet they are fully capable of getting a job and working... I have no time for those folks..... system abuse is what it's called. so job creation by government grants is good in principle, but it too gets abused... you can't win... but if I had to choose between welfare abuse, and job-creation abuse, I choose the latter... because at least some people will benefit from having a job... and society benfits from the "value added" activity & products that the work force creates.... as for the 6% of ethanol supplied by corn?... of course... who could eat that much corn on the cob?... no-one grows it, because no-one wants it... another economics concept is "supply & demand"... just create the demand, and very quickly the supply base will provide it.... it's quite trivial... and if you think there are not enough farms to grow corn to provide all the supply, then maybe some third-world country in africa can provide the land - industry will provide the irrigation systems and the corn-seeds (all driven by "demand"), and all of a sudden we fix 2 problems for the price of one!

You can look in any older "Hot Rod" type magazine and see ads for "water injection systems" to increase power and gas mileage.If you ,examine the "system" you will find it uses manifold vacuum which is lowest at max power,just the opposite of what real "water injection"needs,this is the "myth" I mentioned. I know a little about ADI (anti-detonation Injection) systems, as they are called on older piston aircraft.I'm an FAA licensed A&P Mechanic and actually worked on aircraft using these systems. I also attended Flight Engineer school on the same aircraft (DC-6B)I've also worked some on Reno Unlimited air racers,that make much use of water,in fact most of the racers have one wing full of gasoline and one wing full of water,it's sprayed on oil coolers and radiators as well as into the intake system.I noticed the author of the referenced article mentioned the loss of 80/87 and 100/130 avgas and the problems caused by the use of 100LL.At that time many light aircraft were converted to auto gas. As an Authorized Inspector I approved some of these conversions, the same warning was on every STC (supplemental Type certificate)"Never use fuel containing Alcohol in this Aircraft!)Ethanol raises octane rating if you can keep it mixed.

I understand your skepticism regarding my recommendation after all the hassles I experienced. I can only say that having invested all this effort to have my problems fixed, I feel a high level of allegiance to this quality stove/range. At the same time, I believe that the Dacor engineering people are now fully aware of the issues and hopefully will prepare the correct trim pieces for this combination of appliances. I trust that they will also redesign the C-clip (on the vent armature) to prevent the pop-up vent failure. In time, with product revisions, I believe they will fix the switch and indicator light shortcomings. Nevertheless, I posted the issues so that potential buyers of this stove can impress upon their vendor/supplier what problems to anticipate and avoid. With the underfloor Fan, together with a tall 15" pop-up Vent, we found the downdraft extraction system worked exceptionally well. Our prior research indicated that OTHER premium brands of stove with Downdraft Vents (such as Jen-Air) were only partially effective, as you noted in your reply. So we opted for this newer venting system because a hood extractor was not feasible over and island cooking counter. For the sake of brevity, I omitted to advise that the "splashing" of grease onto the Vent pop-up was more of an occasional issue. Depending on how you cook with skillets, the "splashing" could be reduced most of the time. Therefore, this problem has not been a deal-breaker, but highlights a design shortcoming. I too am able to lift pots to observe the gas flame size. The reason for bending down is because of the variety of base-sizes of our pots and pans. When placed on differing sizes of gas-rings, the height of the gas-flame affected how much of the flame heated the base of pots. In some cases, the flame would begin lapping the outer sides of pots, which was more clearly visible when viewed underneath. I hope these responses clarify why I rated the product as deserving recommendation.

This is an Ad!!!

And it contains mis-statements. Take for example the quote below:

Exhaust of a properly running engine is pricipally the products of burned fuel, a small amount of unburned fuel and hot air, a lot of hot air. Most of the small amount of unburned fuel get oxidized in the catalytic converter, so at the tail pipe, there's not much unburned fuel.

It's ashame people have to push unproven merchandise. Anyway, for those that want to just discuss fuel savings including saving gas at the pump, I found an interesting fuel savings talk forum. It looks like its new, but has a lot of fuel talk categories. They aren't selling anything, only a message board as we used to call them.
