French Door Fridge with ice in door question

If you saw my last post you know I need a new Fridge- Mine died after only 7 years. The new ones with the freezer on the bottom all have French doors. A lot have ice and water in the door. Nice feature but -WOW it looks like it take up a lot of space. Almost the entire left hand door and then the top of the interior. How do most of you feel about the lost space. I am considering a Whirlpool model.

I can't find too many Fridge reviews on the web. It's almost strange.

I got a KA with the water dispenser inside the refrigerator and ice in the freezer. Saves a lot of space!

we are in the same boat... .both ka models... one with 27cuft inside fridge and ice/water on the outside. Another model (same physical dimensions) with 25cuft on the inside and water is inside the fridge.

I was told the 27cuft is measured before ice maker is installed.

I personally like the look of the plain SS fridge and have icemaker/water inside.

the 27cuft model KFIS27 model is a lot nicer as it has ball bearing metal sliders whereas the 25cuft model KBFS25 has no railing of any sort and is not as nice on the inside.

I personally wish there was a icemaker/water inside model with railing and all the nice touches.

So long ramble here i think we are going with the 25cuft one wiht hte water/ice maker inside.

We have a Kenmore Elite badged Samsung fridge and love it. We needed a CD model, and at the time they didn't make the FD in CD so ours is a SxS. My grandparents have the FD full depth Samsung fridge with the dual freezer drawers. We have had 0 problems with our fridges and are very pleased with our purchase. Remember as you're reading reviews, that usually more people take the time to write negative reviews of products than people who are happy with their purchase. It's a way venting their frustration. Not to say that people who are happy with their purchase don't post reviews, just that unhappy people are more likely to post them. I would keep that in mind as you're reading reviews online. I did a little research for you on the KA FD freezer drawers. It looks like they do offer the solid freezer drawers on the following model that includes your other specs. However, you lose some space as it's 19.6cuft vs the 24.8cuft you listed above (it's 30" wide vs. 36" wide). KitchenAid Architect Series II KFFS20EY These two models offer mats in the bottom of the wire freezer baskets- KitchenAid Proline Series KFCP22EXMP KitchenAid Architect Series II KFCS22EVMS How important is the water dispenser to you? If you can live without it, you may want to consider this FD fridge from LG: LG LFC25765 So it sounds like your choices are: - Go with Samsung and get everything you want. On the off chance you need a repair you may have a delay. -Go with a KA model with wire shelves in the freezer -Go with the smaller KA fridge to get the solid shelves in the freezer, but sacrifice storage space -Go with a KA model with in the door ice/water to get the solid freezer shelves without having to sacrifice space -Go with a fridge like the LG to get the solid freezer shelves, but sacrifice the internal water dispenser Hope this helps!

We have a Maytag Performa single door that is now our basement fridge since we remodeled & put in a KA counter depth French Door in the kitchen. Obviously, I don't have the direct experience you are looking for a recent Maytag FD, but I might be able to comment on several of your questions since both are now made by the same American company. Our Maytag is probably 7 years old & may have been manufactured prior to Whirlpool purchasing, thus some of my experience may not apply. The price seems great for a French Door fridge so if you don't need the bells & whistles this might be just the one for you. My experience with French Door is that the closing & sealing is hard to get used to. I do not think it is elegant on any brand. I still check our KA periodically, but I think it is FD, not the Maytag. The next time you are in a showroom open & close several of the FD refrigerators. You may have the same experience with all of them. We did have ice fall to the bottom of the Maytag because of the baskets, but I don't remember it being a problem -- sometimes the ice evaporates or shrinks in size before you know it is there. We fill our freezers quite full & often have small items pop over the baskets/containers. I felt the Maytag was easier to retreive items from under the basket than the KA is. My memory of ice for the Maytag was that the ice container was HUGE giving us more ice than we required. I used some other smaller container & had plenty of ice & more freezer space. I cannot remember it being particularly noisy, but our floorplan is not an open one. One issue I did have is since it wasn't digital (but didn't understand until I got a digital one) is veggies would freeze when we traveled. I ultimately would turn the temp up a few degrees to accomodate for the door not being opened during our absence. In all my refrigerators I have to work with the shelf arrangement to assure air is flowing properly. It seems initially I invariably have air blocked & freeze a few items until I can rearrange the shelves to make sure I'm not concentrating air in any one place. I love it when I can save enough on one applicance to justify (or purchase) another one. I say "go for it!". It sounds like your expecations will be met. Good luck.

I have seen several French Door fridges with no icemaker in the door. I made the mistake of buying a LG French Door with the icemaker. Long story short, I had the thing worked on at least 5 times by the time it was 5 years old. I've had a recall because of interior lights staying on and catching peoples houses on fire, a computer board went out. The icemaker went out and I had it replaced to the tune of $600 for the parts and repairman. But it never worked at all even after he replaced it. Repair man said it needed another couple of hundred worth of work. I just quit spending money on it at that point. I'm building again and this house will have a Side by Side GE with the door ice and water dispenser. The icemaker is the 10 LBS arctic one. The LG will be in the garage for a beer cooler. Pretty sad for a fridge that is only 6.5 years old.

My daughter was interested in the 36" Whirlpool with just the water in the door, but she wasn't happy with the sliding drawers. They didn't pull out easily and she figured they were halfway to jamming before she bought it. She ended up with a GE Profile with just a water dispenser on the door - the freezer does have an ice maker. She was replacing her second LG FD with water on the door. Actually the water and ice dispensers on the LG were the only items she >>didn'tHelene

pricepal, do you know the model number of your KA? We've been looking at the FD refrigerators as well and had decided thatthe icemaker/water dispenser in the door takes up too much space and is a magnet for repairs. Saw one today with the water inside and ice in the freezer and really liked it. The water dispenser takes up virtually NO room at all. Now just need to decide which brand to buy...Kitchen Aid or???

We have the water/ice on the outside of our FD fridge. I have four kids who drink mostly water, so having water on the inside would have resulted in my fridge constantly being opened. I could do without having the ice dispenser but finding a fridge that had just water on the door but with other features we wanted was too hard to find. I was worried about the ice dispenser taking up a lot of room, but we went with a very big fridge (29 cu ft) due to our family size. The ice/water dispenser does not take up much room on the inside of the fridge - in fact, we have plenty of space inside our fridge. I was more worried about losing space on the inside of the door for condiments, but with the model we bought, we still have plenty of room on both doors for what we need. I looked at quite a few manufacturers, narrowed down to the LG and Samsung, but didn't like the drawers on the LG at all. We have had the Samsung now for three months and so far, so good. I love it. I was recently at an appliance store looking at ranges/DW and somehow got to talking to the rep about refrigerators. I happened to look at a GE Profile on the floor and it was EXACTLY like my Samsung, except the design of the door dispenser was different. THe interior was exactly the same. Turns out Samsung makes the GE Profile fridges, though the Profile is more expensive than my Samsung was.

If you haven't already looked at the Samsung or GE Profile, check them out. Though the ice machine looks like it takes up a lot of room, it really doesn't and there is still plenty of room on the door for condiments - at the top the shelf is very small, but I put my smallest items there. Truthfully, I feel like I have more storage on the doors now than I did with my old side by side.

As fourkids4us mentioned, the GE Profile which my daughter purchased is made by Samsung. They are practically identical twins. What pushed my daughter towards the GE was that we had heard from several different appliance stores that GE service was 'better' than Samsung. After having had to replace 2 different LGs in 5 years (fortunately she had warranties on them and it cost her nothing to replace - bless American Home Shield) she is hoping not to have to see a service person for a very long time.

I have a Samsung that does not have water/ice in the door since I needed to use that door for food. It's 29 cubic feet, too. I love it.

In January we got an Electrolux French door with the ice in the freezer instead of on the door. We got it for the exact reasons you're saying--it took up too much space and was a repair magnet. We were also looking at the 72" Kitchen Aid.

There actually are a fair amount of bottom-freezer fridges without external water/ice. Have you looked on AJ Madison? You can actually search that way. Start searching fridges, and down the left side there are a bunch of features you can choose, to narrow down the results. One of them is water, and another is ice; the options are internal, external, or none. You pick your option and then you see all the fridges that fit that description. There were also a few bottom freezer fridges with a single door instead of a French door.
