Any info on range hoods from ebay?

I like the Zeyphr Milano 36" range hood. It's a wall mount with the curved glass. I can get it for about $1300 if I shop well. There are similar looking range hoods on ebay for around $500. There are several suppliers but they claim to be Italian made. Two of the brands I saw were Lux Air and I think Enjen. Does anyone know anything about them? I'd love the savings but if there is a huge difference in function; I'd absolutely reconsider. Thanks in advance.

I would still stick with Zephyr as I have had very good experience with their reliability and serviceability should you need product support. Believe it or not some of these hoods coming into this country use light bulbs that are almost impossible to find. I have heard of people who cant get new bulbs for these odd brand hoods. Ive sold many different hood brands and I am confident in the quality fit and finish of a zephyr. These other brands are $500 for a reason. Hope I helped..Al

I had a Zephyr Pyramid a few years ago and the only place I could find a replacement bulb on the entire internet was...Zephyr.

Good hood, though. And I'm sure the Zephyr bulb problem isn't an issue anymore. Just funny that Al would mention that. :)

Sorry I can't help. Those hoods are tempting but I couldn't buy one without a little more information than is provided. If you take the plunge, report back please! (You might be able to get info from the seller about the bulbs, but that may be the least of the potential problems.)

Make sure the cfm is accurate. What we found looking at eBay range hoods is many were rated at 700 to 1000 cfm (don't remember the number might have been 870 for the most popular one quoted). When I enquired about the cfm to see if that was some peak reading or for further information what the typical response was either no response or an email back say that is what they were being told by their supplier. When I asked if there were any other specs quoted such as "wind power" or some such which was popular in many of the ads the rating was quoted as some number of m3/min. When I went to a conversion site online I found many of these ratings were actually putting the true cfm at 400 to 500 cfm instead of the higher cfms being quoted. When I emailed purchasers who gave glowing feedback I found the great majority had only looked in the box and had not installed the vent as they were in process on the kitchen. The others had them installed and felt they worked good, but had no way of telling if they were actually pulling the cfm advertised. Comment on stainless above is another to look at. Very true. Find out what grade and then look it up online to see if it is one that is good or one that will give you issues later. One thing we found with our commerical stainless is that magnets will not stick to it. Lower grades will. Also, see if the vent has a flexible duct line for use with it. If it does, everything I read at least, says that the flexible line will significantly reduce the actual pulling power of the vent. Anyone step in here if I'm remembering that wrong. Lastly, I'm not a dealer of any kind so have no preference on vents etc. Just a joe shmo that was in the same boat and could not believe the price of vents. There is no way the materials etc. even if the unit had the rare USA labor should be that high in my estimation. Maybe silly, but they seemed a huge profit area for suppliers. We ended up shopping and shopping until we found a clearance unit for a much more reasonable price. Have a look in your town to see if there are any stores that do this. Anyway, best of luck with it and really do your research if you go with an eBay one. Also, maybe try looking up the name of the manufacturer on google.co.uk and see if it is a euro one. Cheers

Check out range hoods sold at Costco. Good prices, and the Costco return policy is excellent. Their hood models come and go; sometimes there have been major scores reported on this forum. Try to get one with baffle filters rather than mesh if you can. Costco usually offers 30" and 36" sizes in each hood, and some of the ones shown as a chimney style can be mounted under a cabinet without the chimney. The only difference I see is the filters at the bottom where the air goes thru, going up into the hood. One has mesh & the other is....I may be wrong on the name, but....baffles(?). I have no idea if that makes a difference in the filtering process or drawing the air up, or maybe the cleaning? I'd look into that & see if one is better than the other. Otherwise, go w/ the cheaper one! I've ordered many things on ebay & have yet to have a problem. Good luck!

OK, lets go at it piecemeal. What is the width of the range? Is it electric coil, gas, or induction? If installed, or if there is a fixed installation plan, what is the spacing of the upper cabinets on the sides of the range? With respect to air flow: There are several commonly used rules of thumb, one of which is based on total potential BTUs. The BTU method is an indirect method of estimation of needed flow rate, and doesn't account for how well the hood overlaps the range. I prefer the more physical approach based on the needs of capture and containment (what hoods are supposed to do). Capture efficiency depend on how well the hood aperture overlaps the rising and expanding cooking plume (effluent). Containment efficiency is determined by how well the hood air flow through its baffles (or mesh filters) keeps the plume from reflecting out of the hood when it hits the sheet metal baffles or mesh structures. A generally sufficient air velocity is 90 ft/min for gas cooking; induction cooking may allow one to get away with a bit less as it doesn't have a gas combustion plume adding velocity to the cooking plume. Electric coil plume velocities may be in between; the lab measurements that I've seen published don't include coil cooking measurements. (Gas cooking can cause the central part of the rising plume to reach 1.2 m/s.) The necessary air velocity has to exist over the entire hood aperture; we don't get to block off portions of the aperture that we are not cooking under. The aperture has some area -- more if there is good overlap of the plume expansion. Hence I suggest 90 CFM/square foot of aperture to get 90 ft/min everywhere. (You may notice that this is about half of the uprising velocity. We don't need to equal it, only keep it from reversing while the baffle aerodynamics take control of it. Baffle design and mesh flow effects may vary how well a given average air velocity works. I know that around 90 ft/min works for me when induction wok cooking, and that Greenheck suggests for similar cooking a value of 85 ft/min for their commercial hoods. There are types of commercial cooking that call for considerably more velocity, such as grilling, but this is not in the scope of our present discussion.) Ideally, to get good capture to make use of this containment, the hood has to overlap the locus of hot pan bases by about 10 degrees half angle. From this another rule of thumb has arisen that suggests overlapping the cooktop by 3 inches on the sides and front. This overlap is probably too optimistic for some searing or wokking, but many here have reported good capture with this size. For a 30-inch range, this would require a 36-inch wide by 27-inch deep hood. You may not have room for this, or you may wish to depend on the side cabinets to channel the effluent from rear burners and cook the greasiest stuff there. So for a 30-inch range, the minimum hood would probably be 30 inches wide by 24 inches deep (front to back). I suspect for most 20 inches deep is too short. As you may appreciate, the larger hood thus has higher total air flow requirements than the smaller hood, costs more, and requires more make-up air. So you may also appreciate that this aspect of performance alone is in conflict with affordability for a given level of aesthetic design. Wait until we get into make-up air issues. kas

I did a cursory check on what I could.... cfm's and noise (dba?) level. I don't know about gauge of the SS or just the plain ol' relability of the products on ebay that are less then half the cost of the other hoods. That's why I came right here to the source! I'll admit; I'm not a "hood person"...but I plan on getting one. I've always had recirculating junk before in my OTR MW. I'm committed to the notion of ventalation enough that I'm definintely going to get a hood. However, if it's one place I could SAFELY save $$; then I would. If the general feedback is to stay away from the cheaper Italian imports on ebay... then I'll just stick to finding the best price I possibly can on the 36" Zephyr Milano an go from there. I'd love to hear from anyone who has first hand experience on the ebay hoods.

Not offering any advice here, but we did purchase an Ebay hood that has been in use for about 5 months:

The range hood is from eBay, but seems to be exactly the same as the ones from euro-kitchen.com , which are themselves copies of higher end ones. The instruction manual referred to ordering parts from euro kitchen, and the instructions themselves are exactly the same as the ones on the euro-kitchen site, but was a few hundred bucks cheaper. Seller was "bestbuy4home".

Works well so far. Stated CFM of 700, 4 lights, controls on both sides, 6 speeds. Like every island hood, does not capture as well as a wall hood, but, especially at the two highest settings, it has proven adequate for searing meats, frying fish and other similar tasks. For day to day use, it's fine so far. It is, of course, vented up through the roof.

Some advice from someone who probably wouldn't actually take this advice:

Camargo's works and looks good (are you looking at the same brand?). It's not being installed in cabinets so replacing it wouldn't be awful. You're not that into ventilation anyway.

So.......

It might be worth a gamble.

camargo... those from the link and yours look like what I'm considering. It's good to hear they work for you because a savings of 1K would be welcomed. Mine will be wall mount but the same style. It will vent up, make one 90 degree turn and then through the existing duct work that the old MW went through. I really wonder if the extra 1K would be worth it. I don't grill or sear inside ... after all this is Fla and we have a killer grill that I do all that on. I do alot of cooktop cooking, sauting veggies and whatnot. But... aside from boiling water... that would be the extent of my ventalation needs.

Good point fori... if it ended up being awful... I could always replace it down the road. There might be cabs to either side but a 36" is a 36" and would not involve any cabientry. Once in a blue moon I cook fish inside but tend to bake it more then cook it on the cooktop. It's mostly veggies, omlettes, brown cutlets of some sort before I bake them. I do want to do more wok cooking but again, that'll be mostly veggies with some shrimp thrown in.

I bought a Jasmine hood from ebay. It works fine for my purposes. It is supposedly 720 cfm. It does an aequate job of getting the smoke when I grill.
It was in perfect shape when it arrived. If it had not been, though, I don't know what the customer service would have been like.
We rehabbed an entire house. I really had to pick and choose what I bought. For me, this was a good deal.

Hope it helps to have a review from someone who already took the plunge.
