I have an odd question about undermount sink in bathroom

This may be a strange question but I hope someone here has experience. I have very large cats - around 20 pounds (they are Ragdolls which are a big boned cobby shaped cat and can be larger than Maine Coon cats).

My cats love to nap in the sink - they don't fit the sink so they spill over onto the counter top. Right now I have drop in sinks but we're considering getting new countertops with undermount sinks. My worry is can my heavy duty cats cause problems with the undermount sinks? Is there a weight limit? Can it be dislodged and fall?

I know this is weird but I hope someone will be able to answer my question.

Mongo, thanks for your answer - I hope you're right. I'd hate to have to deal with a scared cat and a broken sink. LOL

I don't think you're making a mistake since you're going with it for aesthetic reasons. I have the portrait suite in my downstairs bath (pedestal sink though) and it seems like you're using it for the look. IMO it's really just the plain drop-ins that have no style to them that look less expesnive. The portrait series doesn't "look cheap" to me. It's the whole package IMO, not just any one element. The type of vanity and countertop you install it in will have as much of an impact as whether it is undermount or not.

With kitchen counters that thick, I believe they face the counter with a layer of ply to support the stone. I wouldn't think that the sink would have problems with the thickness, the weight of the stone and the sink might make the slab crack if not supported across the vanity span. You could post this question over on the kitchen forum too.

Thanks Jules8 for your feedback. I'm not too picky about spotting. This will be a bathroom used daily. I am glad to hear that there isn't splashing. I will be using a single hole Hansgrohe faucet. Thanks for the info about the slope, and as you've indicated it seems too shallow. I have a limited space for the sink in my vanity and this one provides a lot of interior space within the confines of my cabinet. If I decide to get another sink I will have to call the cabinet maker to double check the tolerance I have. The look of this sink is really nice though and I probably will stay with it.

If you could modify the cabinet frame by an inch or so maybe you could make this sink work. The outside dimension is 12-5/8. My daughter has this sink in her bathroom. Her'sis a Porcher sink but they have been bought out by American Standard. It is now called DXV. It is also available in a square or oval shape. Here is a link. DXV petite sink

I agree with Mongo....no worries. Maybe you need to consider bigger basins....that would solve the kitty overflow :-)

Toto makes a model that's nearly 25" wide...

I wasn't convinced that the granite guys attached my undermount sink securely enough. To prove that they did, the 6'5", 250ish lb man tried his level best to pull it out from the bottom. The sink is still there :)

LOL, jamesk, I'm not spending money for a fancy sink just for my cats to nap in although they would probably thank me.

Monicakm, oh I'm so glad I wasn't the only one worried the sink was secure enough. Okay, I can relax now.

annkathryn, don't you just love that website Cats in sinks - LOL they are so cute. I should take a picture of my cats - although it would probably be posted not in cats in sinks, but cats sprawling over countertops because only the backend fits in the sink.

I have undermount sinks in my master bath and my cat has shown zero inclination to explore them. He does wander around the counter top though. And the heated floor is a definite attraction.

I have to laugh at those Cats in Sinks pictures tho - those silly cats really do look comfortable in those hard sinks!

I always thought my 15-lb Ragdoll was a big lug. I can't believe yours are 20lbs! They just have the best dispositions though, don't they-- he is so affectionate, more like a dog than a cat.

i had a maine coon cat once and she loved to sleep in the sink...i think it was nice and cool for her. i guess if you have two, you have to have the double sinks. but then what do the humans use? kren

Callieandkarin, yes my boys are big and DD#1 has a male and he's even larger. My girls are a little more petite in the 15 lb range. I love ragdolls, once you have them you can never go back. They are so dog like that they were more of a dog than my actual dog,. LOL They used to beat the dog in run and fetch the ball and she was annoyed to say the least. Of course she was elderly by then but she loved her cats. So gentle, affectionate, loyal and clever. Are your cats crazy about drinking water from the tap? The girls used to turn on the tap every day to help themselves to fresh water drips- I had to wrap towels and stuff around all my taps for a long time to break them of this "habit". they also are constantly going around the house and opening drawers - or maybe that's the resident ghost?

Kren pa - yes I think they do love the sink because it's cool. I have 4 cats - that's my limit - so sometimes they go into the bathtub or shower.
