Wall ovens and gas range top recs - please!

We are about to embark on a whole house remodel and I am charged with the task of researching and picking all the appliances! I am very excited to have the kitchen of my dreams but am desperate for informed opinions on double electric wall ovens (30") and gas top range - burners only no built in griddle or grill (36).

Heat and precision are important to me as is the warm up time of the oven. Can you tell me your opinions of the appliances below and/or recommend an alternative? I want restaurant-ish quality and have a generous budget. Of course would prefer to not spend more than I have too. :)

We were/are considering the Thermador package but I have been rattled by reviews and comments on their ovens repair record. But I haven't found anything specific to the Professional Series PODC302 that we are considering.

The gas range is the Professional Series 36 Gas Rangetop (PCG366G).

We have settled on the Thermador Freedom column refrigerator and freezer. Appliances need to be all stainless.

Incidentally if you have intel or info on the Thermador pro hood (HPWB36) I would love to hear it. We get it free with the refrigerator.

I should mention that we are a family of four (2 small kids) and I love to cook. Not sure if it is of consequence but our house will have a traditional/cape cod feel.

About 6 years ago my DD installed a Thermador double oven. It takes ages to heat up (at least 20 minutes). Don't know if that has improved, but check it out before you buy. My Kenmore (now kaput) took 5 minutes and the GE that I replaced it with takes only 5 minutes.

Thank you for that. The salesman who I spoke with (and doesn't get commission or bumps for promoting one line over the other - we asked) said that their problems of service had been resolved and he had no complaints. He didn't give me direct info about the warm up time. I will dig further. Thanks again!

I switched my plan from a cooktop (would have been Wolf) to the Capital Cularian rangetop. My ex-GC has a Wolf cooktop in his kitchen. I'm not sure if his wife cooks a lot, but I know she does some. Their cooktop didn't look scratched to me. I didn't get to examine really close up though. Your last post said rangetop. If you're thinking of going in that direction, I can tell you that member Rhome410 has a 48" Wolf. She loves it, but says it scratches. She cooks a tremendous amount everyday. Rhome had the GE Monogram ovens, but had a terrible time with them not holding a steady temperature--bad engineering. She eventually got GE to take them back. Her story makes me very leery of their ovens. I don't have a high-end appliance store in my area so I know how it feels to take a day trip to look at appliances! Okay if it's not such a big place, you can consider how import is a 48in frig? If you foresee any back or knee problems, a wall oven is a better option. The microwave can be a drawer micro. Looking at both cooktop and rangetop. It all depends what style you like. In a cooktop your countertop is cut and all your knobs are on top. So it's right next to hot pots and pans. In the rangetop all knobs are in front away from the pots. Plus it's a nice look! You will enjoy cooking with gas. Ask your electrician what can go together. Subzero 36-42 frig, 36 Rangetop, Wall Oven, Speed/Steam Oven, microwave drawer. IMHO, if your going Subzero for the frig, I would not do a cooktop.

I can honestly say that I won't ever buy another Kenmore appliance in this lifetime. They are not what they used to be. When we remodeled our kitchen a few years ago we bought all new Kenmore - dishwasher, range, fridge. None of them have worked properly since we got them. The dishwasher died after only four years, springing a leak underneath, that we were unaware of until we noticed a problem with the flooring. The sub-floor was destroyed in the fiasco, and it had to be replaced. The range caught fire last weekend. I turned the broiler knob on, there was a boom, and the upper element caught on fire at the connection. It was nearly impossible to put out. The fridge, I'm already looking because it's had it's own problems since the get-go, and I know with the other two appliances gone it won't be long for this world. For a new range, Maytag is out (very poor reviews these days), so I'm looking at an LG or GE double oven free standing range (I have no wall space for wall ovens). I need electric as gas is not an option in my area (I wish it were). We have LG computer monitors and a front loading washer/dryer set and love them all. Good luck to those of you in the market. Even when you do research it's difficult to get a hold of a good product these days. And appliances are only expected to last 5-6 years, as opposed to the 10-15 that once was the norm. Kind of sad really.

I recommend that you post your question on the appliance forum. You will get more responses. I would get the Wolf gas range, convection wall oven with the steam oven above it. This way you have the gas range oven for a large turkey, the convection and steam oven for other items, I have a Wolf range and I love it!!!!

Unless said salesman is a relative or long time friend I would not trust him farther than I could throw him.

The Thermador columns are very good. I would rank them in a class just below Sub-Zero. They are made by Bosch in Turkey.

All thermador ovens are made in LaFollette Tennessee. They get consisently bad reviews in their class. Even if you can't find a review on a particular model I think the smart move is skip this one.

Wall Ovens- Take a serious look at Gaggenau and Wolf. The Gaggs are really top notch,have side swing doors so you don't have to reach over a hot oven door,and hold temp amazingly well. They can reach 350 in about 6 minutes or so.

Rangetop- I think the T'dors are just mediocre. Take a serious look at Capital Culinarian and Bluestar RNB. Enter Capital Culinarian in the Youtube searchbox and look at the vids.

T'dor has at least two suppliers for hoods. My guess is the Masterpiece line is made by Broan and is ok but nothing great.

Thanks so much - I had not heard of Capital Culinarian until I joined this forum. I have been reading about them online but they don't appear to have a presence at the showrooms I am familiar with. However, I live in Los Angeles and it appears they have a plant here so I can get up close and personal if I want!

Any onions on the Wolf rangetop?

The Culinarian is just arriving in showrooms.

Absolute just got two in. Capital factory/offices are in Sante Fe Springs in the OC. You can call them and arrange a tour if you want.

Re Wolf rangetop.
Wolf is the most prestigous here in the USA because they do so much product placement/advertising in the kitchen magazines. It is no coincidence that SubZero and Wolf are in 80% of the kitchens featured in the magazines.

Very well built and very good customer service but medicore at cooking in this price class.
