Why do you think the problem is the towels and not the installation technique?

Is the wall breaking? or is the fastening just loosening?

What kind of wall do you have? Is it through tile?

The towel rack is installed on a painted wall. The wall is SLIGHTLY bulging in a circular pattern around the top of the right anchor. Before when it loosened this didn't happen. My husband doesn't want me to call the contractor 'for every little thing.' He says it's our problem. (Like the guy didn't make any money on our totally gutted bathroom remodel! And he's going to do another bathroom this year)

Who decided where the towel rack would go, and when? If the contractor knew ahead of time where it was going, and he truly gutted the walls, I would have thought he'd have put blocking behind that area to more securely screw the rack into.

OTOH, lots of towel racks are installed on drywall with no problems. There are of course lots of different types of anchors. I wonder if he's already used the really big ones that need a key to pop them open, which seem to work best for heavy items? if not, that might be worth a try.

I'll have to ask him. When the bathroom was finished, he installed the cabinet hardware, toilet tissue holder, and towel rack. The previous towel rack had been in the same location, but it wasn't a double towel rack, and it had held only hand towels. The towel rack HAS to be there on the short wall. There is no other place to put it.

When the towel rack loosened the first time, he installed a different anchor instead of the hardware with which the rack had come. I don't know what type it is. I'll e-mail him for his take on it.

The towel rack is the Sonora series, Danze D442611.

I have heavy items on drywall, without that problem, but it sounds like the drywall is breaking and there must be an anchor pulling through.

Certainly if there is enough force on the bar, it could break the drywall. I may wonder that someone is leaning on it? It just seems that towels, however plush they may be, would be unlikely to break the wall.

I have a heavy train track shelf with hooks that I installed only on drywall (with toggle bolts) that I hang up to 4 heavy plush towels on in addition to some towels on the shelf part, and certainly it is not pulling out...

This is not a towel problem, it's an installation problem. The best thing, of course, is when you can plan ahead and put wood blocking inside the wall where you will be attaching fasteners. Since that is not possible, you need to use an appropriate wall anchor. It sounds like a light-duty fastener was used, and this pulled out of the wall so a different light-duty fastener replaced it, and this is pulling out. You would do better with some type of moly bolt or toggle bolt. Hopefully the existing fasteners have not made such large holes that they will need to be repaired first. It sounds like you are not particularly handy, so, instead of getting the contractor back who has failed to do this right twice, I am wondering if you have a friend who knows what to do...it's not that hard. Anyone who is the least bit handy should be able to put in new, proper anchors and re-mount the towel bar in under 10 minutes as long as there is no major wall damage.
