La Cornufe vs. Lacanche, AGA and others
Comments (5)I used two different gas Aga's will living in England for a few years. In the first house, there was nothing other than the Aga for cooking, so it had to stay on all year long. Even with the temperate English weather, it made the entire kitchen and areas surrounding the kitchen very hot during the warmer months. In the second house, I had a separate oven and hob (range top), and I was advised to turn the Aga off during the warmer months. This is however, not recommended here in the USA. The Aga representative I spoke with here, said it will cause the unit to rust. I live in Michigan and although it would be wonderful for our winters, it just gets too hot here to consider leaving it on all year long. After adjusting to the differences of the Aga, two large burners and small ovens, I came to love it. It is a solid piece of equipment. The ovens though smaller, cook foods beautifully. And it could hold everything I cooked for my family of six plus guests even on the my biggest cooking day. The two burners are large and can hold several pots at once. They are set at two temperatures, boiling and simmer. I never found this to be an issue. It was great being able to put a pot of water on and have it at rolling boil within a few minutes. The top of the unit (actually the whole unit) is extremely warm/hot so butter, etc. could be melted in a bowl just on the top. I seriously considered the Aga Legacy, but after seeing it in person and reading many reviews about it, I decided it wasn't what I was looking for in a range. I also considered the La Cornufe CornuFe' but I learned it was owned by Aga Rangemaster. I have seen it in person a few times and it just doesn't impress me. Neither the Legacy or the CornuFe' felt as solid as the original AGA. I have decided on the Lacanche range, most likely the Cluny 1400. I like that can configure the ovens and stove top to my specifications. And I believe the small ovens will work similarly to those of the 4 oven, gas Aga. I used the warming oven in the Aga to make many slow cooked meals and I plan to do the same with the warming cupboard on the Lacanche. I have also read reviews on this range going back years and it is extremely well reviewed by most everyone who owns it. I found many of the older reviews are under blogspot just by searching by Lacanche. Good luck with decision!...See MoreWhere in the world is the CornuFe 90 with the vertical oven?
Comments (7)Hi Plllog Can I just clarify something I mentioned on another thread. The Aga Legacy and the LaCornufe have lots of similarities. But they are not exactly the same thing. However my searches today found a LaCornufe in the guise of a Falcon Continental. Now they are exactly the same thing with different knobs and a little extra styling on the front of the La Cornufe. The falcon Continental retails for about half the retail price of a Lacornufe. I am flabbergasted. Absolutely shocked. I just couldnt believe my eyes when I saw the Falcon interior and cooktop. (At Dalzells of Markethill near Armagh in Northern Ireland UK.) Still can't believe it. Surely there must be a mistake. I am going to take photos next time just to be sure, of all the little details I see on these rangecookers and then compare them on here. What was most interesting was that the Falcon Continental had all the same problems as the LaCornufe. THe door wouldnt close right. The racks stuck and scraped against the sides of the oven as I pulled them out. And the bottom storage drawer bounced back at me when I tried to close it. Oh dear. Comments (62)We've had ours for 7 years now (pic way up above) and I do love it. HOWEVER... one side of our oven broke in September (the convection element needs to be replaced), and the part to replace it still has not come in - 4 months later we are still waiting. The warranty is 5 years, so we are out of luck with La Cornue working with us and have to rely on our local retail establishment for service work. The oven sizes are fine, unless you plan on doing a giant turkey. We've done an 18 lb turkey no problem, and I love doing roasters in it. Cleaning - the ovens have sides - top and bottom as well - that remove for cleaning so it's not a complete nightmare. But if you are used to self-cleaning ovens you may not like it. All that being said, we are overall happy with it. But if we ever need another oven, I doubt I would go with the same brand only because service has been very difficult. Good luck!...See Morerange dilemma
Comments (12)Hi Victoriajane-- have you called eurochefusa (fratelli distributor) to see if they can direct you somewhere to look at the fratelli?? That's what I did and was shocked to find a wholesaler literally 2 miles away who had one in his shop. He doesn't market heavily direct to consumers and works out of an industrial park so he had escaped my radar. Eurochef might also be able to hook you up with a satisfied owner--if you were near me I know I'd let you try mine :) I was concerned about oven size too when shopping the berta and fratelli (berta oven is slightly smaller) I took my largest pans into both showrooms and put them in the oven, adjusted the racks etc. I fit a 24 lb turkey at Thanksgiving no problem in my largest roasting pan and can fit 3-4 9x13 pans in the oven at one time properly depending on what I have in them and how they need to be arranged. I could only get 2-3 in the berta. The 36" wide provides a bigger oven left to right than I've ever had, but the european style ovens are not quite as deep front to back. The nice benefit with the fratelli though is that it is literally counter depth. It looks fabulous and the front of the stove is even with the front of my cabinets and doesn't stick out at all. I don't think you need to be embarassed at all about wanting something that is not only functional, but looks nice/fits your vision ( a pro range is certainly gorgeous as well in the right environment). I love to cook, think I'm pretty good at it, and it makes me really happy to be a good cook on a pretty stove :) I absolutely love the lacanches but they were out of the question from the beginning due to budget...
