Any chill hours vs bloom observations?
Comments (52)Below 45 model: 566 Between 45 and 32 model: 545 Utah model: 522 And, you can probably add about 20 more ch to my equation, as I was late in getting my weather station up and online. Carolyn is describing my situation exactly. My pluots are very late to blossom. All pears are still dormant, but I do finally see a couple of leaves starting to push out this week on a couple of my earlier pears. My Peacotum has only now pushed out 2 blossoms. But, good new for my Minnie Royal and Royal Lee, they are better synced, just took two weeks for the Minnie Royal to really open up the blossoms, and some of the earliest Royal Lee blossoms are turning into little cherries. So, I should have my first decent crop of Minnie Royal/Royal Lee cherries this year. I will be building a netting cage for both of them this year, and am taking extensive measures to keep snails out of my trees this year. They were worse than the birds for ruining my stone fruit. I also had quite a few blossoms on both my pleurries I planted in January, but the danged Burgundy plum was much slower to wake up, so no significant cross pollination occurred, so highly unlikely I'll get any pleurries this year, so disappointed. Comments (5)gsciencechick is correct--the Big Chill fridge is a Whirlpool. I purchased last year for our kitchen and we love the fridge. I agree the price is high but Northstar, Elmira fridges were even higher and I couldn't see us putting a regular fridge in our eclectic vintage kitchen. Everyone who sees it loves it and we get loads of compliments on it. Knock wood, no problems, but I had great service from them when calling with questions and later when ordering....See Morex-post: Anyone have a BigChill?
Comments (6)Here is a copy of one of my posts on another thread when I was debating my fridge and was looking to see if anyone else had any information: "Decided to call Big Chill during a break here at work - very nice to talk to! Differences between Big Chill & Northstar appear to be: (1) manufacture - Big Chill uses Whirlpool and he advised you can check out any of the 20.9 cf line as they all use the same compressor to get reviews; (2) metal (Big Chill) versus powder-baked fiberglass (Northstar); and (3) price (seems Northstar is out of Canada which results in the higher pricing). Other info on Big Chill: 1 year warranty on parts & labor, 5 year warranty on the compressor. I asked about how long to expect to receive after ordering and he advised about 3 weeks." Comments (24)@jayfitz, I went through a very similar decision making process, when we decided on the appliances for our kitchen. Our old kitchen had a 30" Bluestar RNB. We absolutely love it; it's such an amazingly well-designed range. But I hated the fact that I only have a single oven. I was convinced that I should get a 48" range instead. I particularly was enamored with the idea of getting asymmetric ovens. I do love the big oven in the 30" range. But I regularly wish for having an additional small one. This was the critical stage in my decision making. I realized that I would benefit from a little extra real-estate on the stove top. But I literally never would use the full 48". It's just a waste of good countertop surface. I don't have the attention span to juggle more than two or three pots for active cooking -- and things that need to slowly simmer usually go into the oven anyway. We talked to our kitchen designer and brain stormed about alternatives. We ultimately decided on keeping the 30" RNB, although if I had to buy new, I'd get the 36" model instead. That gives us the big and powerful oven that we need. But we added a 24" Miele combination steam oven and a 24" Miele SpeedOven. In particular the CSO is going to get a lot of use as I come up to speed with its functions. It is IMHO a much better alternative than the built-in small oven in the 48" range. Please note that "wall" ovens don't necessarily need to go into the wall. It is not unusual to place them under counter tops or even in an island. You can be creative in your layout. The space that you gain from not having the ginormous 48+" hood should allow you to shuffle things around and make space for at least one 24" oven somewhere....See Morefarmhousebound
