Are the Monks-Royal Daulton valuable?

I've acquired Royal Daulton Monks in the cellar mug and dish. I like them a lot, and have a feeling they could be quite valuable after finding a couple of similar items on the 'net, but it's not my field of collecting. Both the cup and plate is signed Noke and they are in perfect condition.

Valuable? yes!
I heard a well researched program on Royal Doulton pieces signed Noke many years ago....can't remember the details, if that signiture was father or son...I'll see what I can dig out.
But....don't give it away!

Wow, thanks so much Linda!: I am pouring over the web page with great interest. And for checking your resources. . . . I think the monks set looks so cool, and if particularly valuable - bonus. No, won't be giving them away!

Good reason.....to properly insure them. That means you will have to have them "scheduled" as fine art.....and depending on what sort of policy you have, will need an appraisal and to pay extra premium. I did that for a lot of years....then decided to just to take my chances with the value of my household furnishings. Before you commit to having stuff appraised, check with your insurance carrier. I believe you insurance will pay a percentage of the value of your house on the contents. Some carriers will allow "appraisal after the fact"....that is you need to carefully document what you have, not necessarily with dollar amounts, but with good descriptions and pictures and file that in your safe deposit box. If you suffer a loss, take the pictures and descriptions and make a claim. They employ experts to determine worth. so even if you had it appraised, they would double check before paying.....exceptions of course are things like jewelry and gem stones. But check the cost of the insurance before you pay for an appraisal. Linda C

Stacy, my daughter & I were in Amsterdam the 3rd week of April last year. It was still cool (low 50s) with showers almost every day, but the trees were budding out & the grass was greening. I didn't see any mention here of the tram/street car service, which is very good. Lots of routes & they run about every ten minutes. It's not inexpensive - a day ticket is a better deal rather than a single fare. Almost all the tram stops have route maps on the backs of the stop shelters. The Rijksmuseum had just opened when we arrived & we spent a couple of hours in the Dutch masters area. They do close at 5 PM. There is a very pleasant-looking restaurant in the center of the bldg. English is spoken everywhere - we never had a problem. Be sure to try a Dutch pancake with butter & powdered sugar - a national treasure, & big - about 10 inches across. Yum yum. There's a local restaurant across from the flower market that has good ones. Many sidewalks, especially along the canals, are cobbled - my ankles got tired of holding me straight. Wish I could tuck into your suitcase - you will be enthralled.

I love the story about the notes with things. I think it's important to let people know, just in case something happens to us, if something has a history beyond what they know. Also if one thinks it has value beyond what one might think. re: the original question, I'm with those who say if they're not taking up space you need, might as well keep them. BUT (BIG BUT) make sure that your kids etc. know that they will not hurt your feelings if they choose to not hold on to them beyond your time. That you were keeping them for the future generations. There can be a lot of guilt associated with getting rid of things that were important to the generations that preceded us. I love that my mom told me constantly 'It's just stuff'. She instilled that if I liked something, keep it. If I didn't, don't. Furniture-wise, I'm down to a table and chairs. I was THIS close to getting rid of them a couple months ago, but decided the chairs need to be recovered and they're still helpful/useful and I still want them around. I started packing up my kitchen today. I have a few stacks of stuff on my dining room table to get rid of one way or another. There are some serving pieces and the like that I haven't kept because I have fond memories of using them, but because I have memories of them always being 'around'. They were always in the upper cabinets. I've decided they don't need to be in my new cabinets. I have a swell ashtray, lighter, and cigarette box that I've kept because I remember them being on the coffee table and I think the design is pretty. I will never, ever use either the ashtray (it's about 10" wide and about 20" long) or the lighter. The box...I may keep. I figure I'll set DH on a quest to see if they're worth something on ebay. If so, I'll take a pic and sell them. If not, I'll Goodwill the ashtray and lighter and keep the box. I'm all about the practicality now. I've taken pictures of lots of things that were hard to part with. I've decided that's better than shelf space.

Thank you. This thread has kept me from the gardening and a possible bee sting. I see many old favorites and more exciting, new authors to try. One of my favorites not listed is Robert Van Gulik, Dutch, world reknown expert on China, son of a diplomat I believe and wrote about Judge Dee in the Tang dynasty. Warning, one book has descriptive scene - 'drawn & quartered' for a mean malevolent being. Was Nevada Barr mentioned? Her lonely ranger, Anna Pigeon, works in the natl. parks. Rarely have physical locales' descriptions stayed with me as strongly. I can still go back to the depths of Lake Superior or the Anasazi cliff dwellings. Perhaps a bit on the dark side.

These old Royal Doulton pieces definitely have some value, particularly with the appealing subject matter. However, be aware that your mug has a few chips on the bottom, judging from your photo. This can greatly or moderately affect the value, depending on rarity.

Hi Christopher. Thank you for your post. I looked at the picture of the cup bottom, and yes it certainly looks like chips. Got scared for a moment because I had looked them over carefully, and so took another look. There are no chips whatsoever. There are dots of colored glaze on the edges, mostly whitish. There is one pinhole in the glaze about a 1/4 inch in from the edge. The glazing is crackled only on the bottom. I should try taking another picture on another setting I suppose . . . Anyway, my original post is quite old, I'm still loving them, and I've had much time to try and value & find information on these without luck. Mostly I've only found information on monk figurines. Do you have any idea of their value and age (or where I might look)? I'm getting the feeling they perhaps may be rare since I haven't found information; however I haven't many resources available.

On the Kovels website, a Monks & Mottoes A, Tomorrow Will Be Friday, Noke, D 3429, 10 In. plate was $90 in 2003. I don't know if this is from the same series as yours or not. As a guess I would say your items are from the 20's - 40's. Don't know about rarity, but definitely collectable. Best way to find info is online, google, ebay, etc...Do you know that Royal Doulton is now owed by Waterford/Wedgwood, and they have filed for bankrupcy? Most of their items are not even made in England anymore.

Thank you again Christopher! I've seen that plate, Tomorrow will be Friday on ebay. It was cute and I was tempted to bid, but it is really not my area of collecting. On the plate the monk was fishing in a pond for I suspect Catholics' meatless/fish Friday. It was signed, great condition, and I think it was won quite inexpensively. This and the figurines (many "Jovial Monks") have been about the closest I've come to similar items - as well as some good info on Charles Noke a previous poster led me to. I will see if I can order from the tiny library in my town a current Kovals book, and keep up my searching on Internet (hah - also am always tempted to misspell Doulton, so may have missed some info because of that). 20s to 40s era does fit into the time the previous owner lived in Scotland, and who collected just these 2 Doulton pieces, also a huge amount of that blue and white Wedgwood, and many, many of those frilly figurines of women and some men in fancy dress that I gave to relatives. Forget who made them, but they looked well made.
No, I didn't know Royal Doulton is now owned by Wedgwood. A good lead - thanks - as I expect they could have Royal Doulton records now.
