What's missing?? or 1/2 a picture frame?

Howdy folks! Just a guess as part of a picture frame but the recessed cut out area is only 3/16" wide. OR AM I TOTALLY WAY OFF & IT'S SOMETHING ELSE OR PART OF WHAT??? Weighs a ton, well almost 2lbs & I cant find anything on Regal Silver Hong Kong.(Not that I believe it's 'real' silver) but that's what bottom sticker says. Recessed area in the ball to post is only 7" & up the post 5 1/2". When does it date to? Now that you've had a good laugh would someone enlighten me please? Thanks again, Katrinka

It's to hold a picture...slide a picture or a sign in between the post and ball....and it holds it....a 5 by 7 picture.

Yes, grading refers to the size of the plant when it was dug up to be sold. Grade does make a big difference in the vigor of the plant. I can make just about anything still alive grow, but not everyone can do that. I was rose buyer at a local retail nursery for a while. I did not buy in anything lower than Grade 1. People's success rates with grade 1 1/2 was much lower. They were cheaper, but not enough cheaper; and it's too discouraging to the average gardener to have a plant not do well. You paid money for it, and you expected it to grow and bloom. There's little consolation in it having been cheaper, and being a lower grade. It still disappointed you, and perhaps turned you off growing roses entirely. Our customers were much happier with Grade 1 roses. I have planted Grade 1 1/2 roses and had them do very well, after a couple of years. Never the first year. I've had more never do particularly well. They don't always recover from being the runts. The rose in your photo was probably a grade 1 when you bought it, but now that it's been in your garden grade doesn't apply anymore. Looks like it just plain didn't grow over the summer. Could be any of a number of reasons for it to not have grown, like not enough sun, not enough or too much water, not enough fertilizer, roots not spread properly when planted. The leaves look like they have drought scorch from not enough water, and the blackening on the canes suggests cane canker from incorrect pruning - leaving a woody stub with no bud at the end. When you prune, cut just above a bud. Woody stubs will just rot, they can't grow without a bud. Like any other living thing, roses need proper treatment all the time, and if they're allowed to weaken they may not be able to recover even if they don't die, they may live for years but never recover. If this one doesn't grow nicely next spring, replace it with a good quality plant.

Hi - don't know if the question is still open or not, but here's my .02: We are in an area that sounds similar to yours. It's basically a commuter suburb with most everyone working in NYC. Extremely competitive, particularly with regard to schools. My older son is in a Montessori preschool that we had to apply to well over a year in advance. The private school he'll be starting in 2004 (he's spending his K year in Montessori), we needed to apply to in Jan. of this year. Because the Montessori doesn't start until the kids are 3 (they must be 3 by Dec. 31), I had my older son go to a 2's program at a local temple. It was 3 days a week, 3 hours a day. My younger son will start that same 2s program this fall, but I was definitely vascillating and will probably only send him 2 days instead of 3. It's a nice program, but like most 2's programs, is basically enriched day care. We could have done without it, but there were a few reasons that I liked it. He DID learn quite a bit, especially religious stuff, which is where I tend to be a bit lax. He got used to being around, and listening to adults other than me, it reinforced many things taught at home but not often practiced like sharing, turns, being kind to others, proper manners, etc. And most importantly - it gave me a 3 hour break three days a week. Besides my work, I was able to read, shop, visit with friends and work out entirely unencumbered by my kid. I found that after a few hours without him, not only did I miss him, but I really wanted to spend time talking to him about his day and what he learned. I think the time off made me a better mommy. Pammyfay, thank you so much for your opinion and making me feel better about my choices since I have never chosen matting and frames before. I love the Sovia frame and I am glad I went with my instinct. It is so pretty in person with the black grooves on the sides adding some style to the frame without it being too busy for the print. When I opened the package, I was so in love with the picture the way it was. But tonight seeing it lean on the wall and I guess the linen off-white mat picked up the creamier wall color (BM Bone white I have on the walls which is a few shades darker than the picture's linen off-white frame and the lighting is fluorescent modern lamps with no natural light at night. But standing in front of the picture has me in awe of the beauty of the print and the texture of the linen mat and the texture of the suede inner mat. I love the design I chose but I guess I pictured the mat looking less creamy. So glad you also love the black grooved frame and you could tell by the picture I posted. :) Thanks for letting me know you have a similar frame that sounds beautiful.

old_dirt......Until this year I used only Miracle Grow. This year I am experimenting with something different with about 2/3 of my new acquisitions. It is an organic product made and sold here in Texas called Lady Bug Raised Bed Blend. I talked to a rep from the company and while she had no knowledge of people using it for hostas (not like you see many hostas in Texas), she thought that the pH of the product matched what hostas require. I mixed in some expanded shale with it. It drains well and seems to retain moisture a little better than MG, which is good for our 90-100 days in the summer, but we'll see if it comes back to haunt me in the winter. http://www.ladybugbrand.com/our-products/soils/raised-bed-blend/

I think the base is a hollow stamping filled with weight material and then a dark cover applied. I've never seen a holder like this one. A photo holder makes sense. It was a common practice ca 1900 to 1930 to mount photos on thin carboard for display.

It dates from very recently....Hong Kong, India and a few other places seem to have gotten into making "stuff" with a very VERY thin coat of silver plate. Sold in the "gift ware" departments
It's not old and likely not worth more than a dollar. Perhaps it originally had glass to slice the picture between.

Lindac curious what your thought is as very recent. This was found in attic of unpacked boxes from a move in 1976. Maybe garage sale it with glass(got plenty of that) and a thick page corner as added protection. Probably why wasn't displayed back then due to all the little ones around, I'd never seen it in moms thing before. Or maybe an old mounted pic on cardboard would be safer. Thanks again!

When you are on an antiques forum, 1976 is very recent.
I hope you get a good price for it....but would suggest, first remove that Hong Kong label.

Original post intent to clarify what it is &/or maybe part of something else possibly COLLECTIBLE. Probably should've noted origin @ least '76 & rec'd reply as to when dates to. "Yes, that decade or '60's or a tweny year time frame." Just wanted to know more. Sorry for reply request but I interpreted 'recent' as just picked up at a $1 store in last few years. I don't expect to get a good price for it in a garage sale since a high ticket item would only be 50cents. So, I'll be even more specific in future on this site. Wait a minute, it just hit me...are items suppose to be both ANTIQUE AND COLLECTIBLE? Not as is ANTIQUE or COLLECTIBLE?

Collectables as defined by Webster are items sought to be gathered by a collector of such items.....but I suppose you MAY find a collector of picture frames. LOL!
Not to worry....people here are pleased to identify things to the best of their ability......and the opinion/advice/appraisal you get is worth exactly what you pay for it.

It is called Antiques & Collectibles forum! So all things can be guessed at & may or may not be right. I have pics of frames my dad made at his plastics factory in Glendale in 1940's that look lot like your frame. The pic was held in place by 2 pieces of glass 1 in front of pic,1 in back,dad's were for 8 x 10 pics. Pics were usually hand colored in back then & these were often part of a dresser set. Pic frame,Tilting mirror in frame, powder container & sometimes mirror topped tray for perfumes. The pic often ended up on top of the chest of drawers as the lady had very little space on her dresser. Compacts & other accessories could be had also & in colors!
