floor tiles for new mb. Marble basketweave? Porcelanosa

Hi all! We have signed the check and demolition starts 2/18. I have a good feeling for what I will choose for the new kitchen, but I am still confused about the master bath.

I am planning on doing the walls in subway tile. After seeing Mrs Limestones fabulous bath, I am attracted to the marble basketweave floor that she used. what is the maintenance on that? It looks like it would cost me $15 per sq. ft.

DH and I visited the Porcelanosa showroom last week. We saw a polished colorbody tile in grey called Urbatek. We might use that. It is only $5.50 per sq. ft. I am afraid the combo won't work. will the floor be too modern looking?

We love the marble mosaic floor tiles like mrs limestone used, but couldn't afford them. We had a subway tile surround for our clawfoot tub, so we used a hex tile on the floor, the little 1" ones with a darker grout. It's very appropriate with the subway tile and also very affordable.

I used unglazed hex in another bathroom and its a great period look. Its a totally different look but still great with subway tile and much cheaper.

If you can get honed marble basketweaved for $15/foot, thats a really great price. I called every local supplier and most charge in the $30-40/foot range. It took forever for me to find it for $19 a foot.

I picked the honed over the polished because it seemed to be less prone to looking bad with wear as well as it being more in line with an old house. I can't speak to how the honed will stand up to normal use but my house has been a total war zone with the construction going on around it and the tile has held up well so far. But I'd have to have it for another decade before I can speak confidently about the wear.

Hope that helps. Im curious to see what more experience honed marble floor owners say as to how it holds up.

My Ex-housekeeper....used vinegar on my dark rust marble floors and it etched lines and spot all over. I had a pro come in and try to buff it out but it didn't work. I have several marble floors and I use Windex without vinegar dilluted in a bucket of warm water. Thats my 2c worth. Nancy

Who makes basketweave floor tile?

A local tileshop in Pittsburgh has a basketweave where the white pieces are slightly curved. On the sample board I didn't care for it as much as pictures of straight ones, and she quoted $12/sq.ft. That doesn't mean it's different that the one you have in NJ, the saleslady was completely unhelpful. Do either of you have any pictures of the basketweave from Standard Tile? On another note, a local tile shop says Walker Zenger sells a white and black basketweave, and quoted me $8.70/sq.ft. It wasn't in the brochure and his sample board was loaned out, so I can't say what it looks like.

The quality in this has to do with how free the tile is from imperfections. It doesn't mean it will hold up better. I saw a better quality basketweave today, and it looked sterile. More like unglazed tile than marble. Quality in Carrara has to do with no yellow tones, consistant grain, and backgroud color. I like this tile better as it has more warmth. It's, it's own look. It really shouldn't be called Carrara as it's beautiful marble in it's own right. Italian Carrara can be very gray, and dingy. that's the way it's running now. Here's another basketweave that I think is more modern. Has larger darker tiles which make it stand out more against the field tile. It's $9 a sf. + shipping. From a seller called Oracle on Ebay, although he's not selling this tile now. Here's a photo.

I am finishing a project now (not a contractor, I am the developer) and am using the 4’x 8’ in two ways. I am using the mega-expensive fabricator with the latest tools and machinery that will miter the edges/niches (even with 1/4” material) and do a 1st class install in the PH BUT in the secondary baths I bought the material and let the tile guy (great tile guy) install in 3 bathrooms. Honestly, tile guy was a rock star and did a great job. He used the suction cups and did the walls. Only difference is that he had to make regular cuts and, for example, in the niches you get the metal strip at each finish turn. The price difference is so dramatic, mostly because the tile guy had not used this before and charged me as if I were installing tile. I may have gotten very lucky. The material looks great but if I had to pay the full fabrication true cost I think I would just go with a natural stone next time. Not materially less expensive if doing it the “right” way.
