What are those luncheon plates called?

Hello all! Does anyone know what those plates are called that ladies used to serve fancy lunch on? They are an oblong/oval shaped plate with a place for a tea/coffee cup at one end. The cup matches the plate.

My father gave me several sets from my grandmother's estate: One set is clear glass with grapes on them, one set is just plain glass, and one set has swirls. They are complete and in perfect condition and I would like to sell a couple of the sets but I can't find any examples online so I know what price to set on them.

When I Google luncheon plates all I come up with are small round plates.

I'm not that up on old glassware, but they are often just referred to as snack sets or luncheon sets at auctions. I've seen some as old as depression ware but know they were popular in the fifties, because I remember them from then. Good luck.

They are called "luncheon sets" as Susie said....but there is also another descriptive phrase....like "milk glass" or "Bubble Blue"....and others I don't even know.

Thanks Judith. We really are enjoying our cabana but do have to ensure the curtains we have on one side (secured to bottom) are open when not we aren't around as if a wind storm comes up, it kind of acts as a sail but fortunately, the whole thing is secured to the wood platform. From the pics I took, it looks like we have a lot of "forest" behind our house but in reality, it is just a wooded trail. I have always been dreading the day when those lots sell and we have a house built right behind us. However, we DO get quite a bit of wildlife coming through our yard including deer which eat gardens and flowers (!!) and last year, a mother bear with her cub walked right past our cabana...luckily, I had just gone in the house for something! Thanks again everyone for your input. Based on your suggestions, I changed the salad to baby lettuces (farm fresh!), added assorted rolls and butter from our wonderful bakery, and also picked up teeny tiny gourmet cupcakes (in grown up flavors like salted caramel, lemon, etc.). I also bought nice to go containers at the party store. I still had the fresh fruit platter with mango, berries, melon, the cold tandoori chicken, and the leek and goat cheese crustless quiche. But I also made a pearl cous cous salad, based on suggestions here. I served Panna water and Pellegrino sodas. It went well, and I was very glad for the excellent suggestions I got here. The teachers really noticed and appreciated that it was a lighter, healthier menu, and homemade. Since it was only 12 of them it was something I was able to do pretty much by myself so that's why we could do something a little different.

Well, I just went back to replacements and lo and behold, that is the pattern name and they have none. But they do have pictures of all four of my plates, so perhaps they've had them in the past. Off to eBay, etsy and Ruby Lane! Gardenweb-----the source of all knowledge! Thank you again, P&H and Fori!!!

I think they are also called buffet plates.

They are called "Tennis Sets" I have sold them for a number of years. I don't know where the name came from.

Not Buffet plates....buffet plates are outsized plates....
In my neck of the woods they are also called "snack sets".
Commonly used for weddings...and I find it very difficult to balance a cup of coffee ot tea in that cup set in that shallow rim without spilling it into my cake or sandwich.
I used to have a dozen in that apple shaped stuff....wonder if they are tucked away somewhere or if i gave them away...?

I called them luncheon plates. Buffet plates must be a multipurpose term or lots of people are wrong.

Wow, what a great response. That's why I love this website.

There are tons of them on eBay. They show up quite a bit in thrift stores here. I haven't seen them price at more than just a few dollars.
