Building a home on the Central Coast of California
Comments (5)You couldn't have chosen a better place to relocate! We live in San Luis Obispo, and love Cambria. We will be building a home in the hills outside Arroyo Grande in the the near future. As for weather - it doesn't get much better than the Central Coast. Cambria can get cool (the price you pay for being on the coast), but it will seem like a tropical island after Philly! I would encourage you to be picky about both your architect and your builder. There are many great ones to choose from in this area. However, I would talk with more than two. Before meeting with architects, have a clear picture about what you are looking for and be prepared to ask lots of questions. The county here can be picky and it is helpful to have an architect and builder who are very familiar with the building codes and have good relationships with the county. Also, if you have views (as many lots do in this area), make sure your architect is talented at exploiting them. We have seen homes with amazing views that had a huge fireplace blocking the view - so sad! Best of luck to you!...See MoreNorthern California build has begun!
Comments (41)OK mudn--here's what I dug up on the Primera Stone finish: A crushed blend of Mother of Pearl and Abalone shells from the islands of the South Pacific are used to enhance Primera Stone pool finishes with a shimmering sparkle. So I think your PB probably put in extra abalone shells for extra sparkle. I'm second-guessing the 12" shelf a little. My thought was that the bubblers will work better and it would also basically be deep enough to lay on chaises or sit in low chairs but not get soaked. Hmmm. As for the glass diamonds on the steps, did they tape those up before they polished/buffed the Primera finish? I was wondering if the diamond-sander they use would scratch the glass tiles. I forgot that this pool has in-floor cleaning system. I was considering it for my pool, but in my area, blowing fine dust is more of a problem than sand. So my PB advised against it since such a system only stirs up the dust and clouds the water. Although he said that it could be somewhat useful on the shelves or benches. I opted not to do them at all since it's too much money just to put in the for the benches. He did say they work great when properly designed and installed in the right environment....See MoreBuilding a California pool in Kentucky
Comments (4)Given the desired size desired, that eliminates a fiberglass shell. They aren't big enough. There very few things you can't/shouldn't do with a liner pool that a gunite pool can do. If there aren't any gunite builders in the area, go with a liner. The tend to be, at least in my area, slightly less expensive too. With a sloped area, expect to have to cut into the land and build a retaining wall and drainage. Those will eat into your budget. I would also be concerned with hitting rock. Bedrock and boulders will need to be jack hammered and that will cost too. While a liner pool normally has 42" walls, the floor can be deeper. In fact, that is how the deep end hopper is designed. They use either smoothed cement or a vermiculite and portland cement mix to form the bottom and slopes that exceed the 42" depth. That which is above ground, such a grotto, won't matter to any pool as long as the proper footing is laid to support the weight. Thermoplastic slides are pretty standard fair and can be pretty darn long if you want. Scott...See MoreCosts of California Closets, Easy Closets, etc. vs. Cabinet Maker
Comments (11)I've tried some of the closets mentioned above for various closets around my home, i found that Modular Closet systems were far superior. (quite surprising actually, considering their cheaper price point then EasyClosets, CC and Ikea..) They're manufactured here in the US so that's good. They're made of hardwood with a really solid melamine surface. It's basically a fully customized closet storage system for the price of a store-bought shelving unit, plus they offer free design service which is really helpful especially if your like me and not a good DIYer. Assembly is quick and install is easy, I had my nephews help me with that. Little piece of advice: Once you got a good closet system to organize your stuff, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it!! Good Luck! Here are some useful links: if you know exactly what you need and want full control on closet layout https://www.modularclosets.com/pages/design-your-own-closet if you want to leave the work for a designer to create a custom closet for you https://design.modularclosets.com/free-design Friendly warning: always CALL THEM to touch base to make sure they understand your needs and requirements. Just because they're proffesionals DONT ASSUME they can read your mind. You can just ggogle modular closet phone number or something, it shld come up....See Moremike13
