no fog bathroom mirror

we are building and would like to minimze/ eliminate the bathroom mirrors from fogging up after showers. i know there are electric heating mats available (do these really work?) it might sound crazy, but i'm considering a toe-kick electric heater (typically used in toe kick area under cabinets) mounted in the soffit over the mirror. can anyone tell me if this sounds like it might work (or not)? warm air from a hair dryer will dissipate the fog. thanx

A decent bathroom vent fan is a far better choice, imo. That way you can get rid of the excess moisture that causes the mirrors to fog AND that could cause mold/mildew problems.
Again, just my opinion.

We used to live in Japan and most bathrooms there have a no fog section on their mirrors. If I ever build my dream home, it will definitely have them! They always have a fan along with the no fog mirror.
Here's a pic I took of one there- not beautiful, but very functional. I've never seen them in the states.

I like a mirror with a frame stained to match the cabinetry like this first picture or two separate mirrors centered above each sink each with a fixture centered above each mirror. In this second photo there are sconces but I can imagine it with lights like one linked here, a pair of them, each centered over the two mirrors. A site to shop for possible lights is lightingdirect. A bathroom exhaust fan should produce 4 air exchanges per hour. Your bathroom is 7 x 7 which is 49sq.ft Assuming an 8' ceiling the total volume would be 49 x 8 = 392cu.ft We want four complete air exchanges per hour so that would be 392cu.ft x 4 = 1568cu.ft per hour. There are 60 minutes in an hour so we divide 1568 by 60min and it equals 26.13cfm. You currently have a 50cfm fan, which is twice the size you really require yet your having problems with the mirror fogging up. I suspect your problem is not the fan. Nature abhors a vacuum therefore a fan cannot push air out of a room unless there is provision for an equal amount of air to enter the room. You can test the theory by running the shower and leaving the bathroom door slightly ajar to allow more air to enter the room. Generally they make a slightly higer gap under the bottom of a bathroom door to allow more space for makeup air to enter the room but in some circumstances that does not provide enough makeup air. The solution then is to install a duct through the wall to an adjacent room and put a grille on either side. That will allow the additional air.

Bathroom mirror frame- mirror not centered on vanity

I did a little thinking on this. Light socket to left of mirror- it is attached to a stud on the right side of the little electrical box. I am going to replace it with a 3 capacity box, putting the socket in the spot on far left, then patch/cover the other two. This will allow me to move the mirror down a few inches to be centered on vanity. I will still have room between it and framed the mirror. Lights- I will then be able to center the lights on the vanity/mirror, not on the sinks. But the original hollywood light had one wire in middle of fixture. To install two lights I will need to split that and run through the studs to get to new opening for new fixtures. I was not thrilled about patching drywall to do this. But...... if I remove the mirror ( which is not glued as originally thought) I can open up the wall behind the mirror, do the split, bore through studs, run new wires up to the new fixtures holes. Then I patch the wall which will be covered by the mirror so it doesn't have to be perfect!!!! It is a lot of work but will be worth it in the end. Can't wait to finish and post pics.

Well, I am trying to make similar decisions on this myself. I too had come across that it is better to have sink lighting from the side rather than above but have found the layout to be challenging and busy. So, I checked houses for sale with 2500 - 3500 square feet and none of them had side sconces around their mirrors. And only one or two had frames around their bathroom mirrors. Most of them had one large mirror across the sink area with lights over it. A bathroom can be a busy area, so from a minimalist standpoint, no frame. Now a mirror in the Livingroom really needs a frame.

I've had one for 10 years. They work but I don't need mine
as I have a steam shower enclosed unit. After a steam I shower and that disapates the steam. Rarely use tub but when I do the mirror stays clear in the center where mat was places. Mat is on a 30 minute timer switch.

We visited Japan a couple of months ago and yes, the no fog heating mats seem to work great. Such a thing had never occurred to me but every motel we stayed at had them. I like to take really hot steamy showers and it was such a pleasant surprise to step out of the shower and not have to wait for the mirror to clear! Immediately decided that that was one more thing I wanted in our new home... now I just have to figure out where to locate the no-fog heating mats and tell my builder. If anybody knows where to get them, please do chime in.
