I am no longer a care-giver

Hi, I used to post here alot at one time. My mom passed away in Feb of this year. I don't think I'll ever get over it. Mother's Day was really hard for me as was my birthday last week.

I'll miss her forever. Rest in peace dear mom...

I'm sorry for your loss. Of course you'll miss her forever, but the raw emotion you're feeling now does temper with time and the memories get sweeter and sweeter.

Yes, because my daughter is 28 and has multiple developmental birth defects, I recently went back to college to get a degree in Human Services so I can level the playing field. After 28 years of doing what I do, I consider myself an expert on programs and entitlements at least in a couple states where we've lived. I have been through it all including widowhood and 2 marriages while raising my daughter. My goal is to keep her OUT of institutional living. I have fought all the way to the governor and won. There is no fortitude like a mothers! My daughter has her own home ( I designed it wheelchair accessible) and she qualified for every program under the sun. She has limited income, in-home caregivers and lots of technology to make this work. If there is any one out there who would like some advise I may be able to help. The whole thing is "equal not more" I have been working in this field for 28 years and I give away my input support and encouragement because I can. There are many of us out there raising adult disabled children.

Thanks everyone! She is absolutely well meaning, and is definitely NOT a gardener! I will explain to her that it is not something I can keep, and the reasons why I can't. Shermann - unfortunately, there are a LOT of plants on the invasive species list that are sold at everything from Mom & Pop Nurseries to HD, Lowe's, etc. Here is the link that I use most often. The ones I could easily find today are the Barberrys, Privet, Euonymous, the Olives, the Jap Spirea, most of the honeysuckles and bittersweet (which I actually planted, but it didn't survive the drought 2 years ago and I will not replace it). Recently added, are butterfly bushes and bradford pears, both have been favorites of landscapers all over my area and have escaped and are crowding out the natural plants here now. Actually, my wife is a bigger fan of watching football than me. We watch when the Packers are playing. The packers did not play in the super bowl this year, ergo, we made no effort to watch - did catch part of Bruce Springsteen's 1/2 time show. I understand that the Steelers made fantastic 100 yd run to their goal following an interception at the opponents goal line - what a save!

Off topic but a problem after care is no longer needed

Most of my friends are in their 70s and 80s and few of the husbands still have their license. Most are widows and many started being the sole driver in their late 60s. One of the things that may be regional is that women will keep their husbands at home as long as they can. Younger members of families decide that Mom can not live on her own even if she is healthy and can live on her own. Most would never do that to their fathers. I am doing fine I had handled everything financial since we were married so I had everything under control. I had already been advised that once a person with dementia stops eating it would only be a short while until they were deceased. Since I visited him at least every other day and actually talked to the aides who were the ones that told me that he had stopped eating I was prepared. None of the other medical staff doctor or nurses ever mentioned not eating, just not eating as much. It was a long 19+ years from thinking his health problem was AFIB to being tested for dementia because he was starting to have problems driving. No diagnosis for his suddenly losing the use of his body other than a mild UTI which finally sent him to the nursing home in late 2015. His passing this January was a relief for all.

My heart goes out to you. After being a caregiver, it's very difficult to move on. I have been caregiver for my mom and little brother who is handicapped. My dh says he is very worried about what I will do when my mom passes. While it will be a blessing for her as she prays for death, there is loss in so many ways.
I pray that you can move on, keep your wonderful memories and move more and more toward celebrating her life instead of grieving over her death.
Easy to say, I know but maybe doing things that she enjoyed, seeing things she liked etc will help you.

I am so sorry for your mom's death, but try to be kind to you. You now have to find a new normal and after caregiving it is hard. Take your time to mourn but keep moving forward.
