Panasonic Commercial Microwave - No Carousel

I am looking for a clean small microwave and really like the Panasonic Commercial Microwave - 1,000 Watts - #NE-1024. It is compact, 17 inches deep and I suspect will suit us fine.

But - it has no carousel.

I called the restaurant supply place and they claim that since commercial microwaves are 'built differently' and that they actually dont need carousels to evenly heat up food (he also mentioned that it is not ADA compliant to have a glass turntable).

Oh well - is this true? I simply dont like the look of some of the off the shelf microwaves (GE,Sharp, etc) and want a clean structured and small microwave - of about 1000 watts.

Does the lack of a carousel in a commercial microwave adversely affect performance?

carousels are useless microwaves cook on density and temperature a carousel does nothing to change the density or temperature. No commercial microwaves have turn tables the most successful microwave ever the Amana Radar range had no turntable

The microwave energy first reaches the food as it comes in through the oven cavity floor so there is no point to a simple built in turntable even if commercial food appliance regulations allowed it, which they likely don't. This design ensures that the item will be quickly brought to the proper food safety temperature when heated/reheated for serving since it will apply more energy to the bottom first compared to residential designs with side wall energy delivery which favor the sides or top first when items are being heated on a turntable. There is also the possibility of a larger mess if something is forgotten and "blows" from being overheated from below.

Something else to consider is you may not be able to get the unit serviced in your home. Not a big deal for a small microwave you can easily transport to a commercial appliance service center if there is one nearby.

First thing that jumps out is the spec for power: 208v ac which is 2 phase 115v. No other option mentioned. This is "commercial power" commonly available only for homeowners in a high rise residential setting because of elevators that require it. You will notice the Panasonic units seem more flexible when it comes to power options.

It is easy to understand the OP view as I have just spent the past 10 days searching and researching for a good countertop microwave. Take into consideration that some of those showing 3 stars or better, may not meet certain criteria for the poster. In my case it was size....could not be more than appox. 20 in. Wide nor 16" deep. This eliminated a lot with decent ratings. I am replacing a 30 yr. old Sanyo that still works great but I am refreshing my kitchen and wanted new (but did not need new). CR also rated a Sanyo highly so my original thought was to get another. Wrong! They are discontinued because Panasonic bought Sanyo. Finally one hit my hot button....a Magic Chef 1.1 cu ft. with the correct dimensions and a door pull, which I preferred over a finicky push button. Price point was much lower than other retailers....$84 plus free shipping..I figured what did I have to lose. So I agree with the other posters when they say, consider them disposable and do not pay too much. I might add that the reviews on this model were excellent plus, when I offered my 30 yr. old working Sanyo on freecycle.com, two requests were from people who owned newer Panasonics which had died.

Thanks to all of you for the thoughtful feedback. I do not want to go the expense of a speed oven just for a few times a year. Xedos, apparently I have done more research in this area than you. This Amana model has five power settings so it does defrost at the 20% power level and can do popcorn at one of the lower power settings. It just doesn't have the dedicated button. Since posting this question, I have called the Amana rep who states that I can use this model for cooking large casseroles as long as I allow the mw to rest for two minutes between 10 minute settings with the door open to allow moisture to vent out. The rep said that unlike the residential mw, the commerial ones do not have a way to vent moisture for longer cooking periods. By the way, I like the fact that commercial microwaves usually rotate the energy source in the roof of the oven rather than rotating the food as in residential microwaves. Folks, I know there is no such thing as an attractive commercial mw. For me in this situation, function trumps aesthetics. I'm really disgusted with the current disposable mw market when the technology for longevity was known two generations ago. Think how many landfills are full of all those dead microwaves. For many models, two years is considered a good track record. Dan1888 and Xedos, thanks for the Panasonic invertor information. I had studied that model, but it had it's fair share of negative reviews. You have definately peaked my interest, and I will look again. Seven years plus is not too bad of a track record. I just don't know if the cavity will hold really large casseroles. Xedos, what model do you have?

GT500 is a 5.4l, 32V DOHC engine with roots type supercharger. The super snake package starts at 605 with the TVS blower. With the KennyBell blower (Ford Racing/Whipple for 2010) it is rated at 725. Mine dynoed at 605 at the rear wheels while being tuned. Going from 500 stock to 625 is less than $1500 in upgrades and well known, supported. Gets a bit more expnesive after that but I still have less than 3000 in HP upgrades. Ford has upgrade components to get this car well past 800hp and the aftermarket well past that. The factory tuned engines are well detuned. The KR was a collector's car, not really a performance upgrade from the more normal GT500s. Thanks for you folks thoughts on the microwaves and turbo-chef. I'll do a bit more looking and reading before making a decision. For me, the 240VAC outlet was not a problem. Already have 3 in the kitchen now and can easily install another.

On a similar note, I was looking at the higher power panasonic commercial countertop microwaves. They are available up to 2600 watts. Anyone use one of these in a residential setting. I really like they way they are built and the simple design without turntable. The speed would be fantastic. What are the downsides other than needing 220v power?

latt - I don't know of ANY microwaves in which the magnetron is located in the floor and disperses energy upwards. They are in the ceiling of the ovens. The ones' without turntables utilize "stirrer sticks" to disperse the radiation in the chamber while the cheaper versions use the turntable to move the stuff being heated within a narrower energy field.

Miele's current microwave does this, same with the original Radarange,

laat - what exactly is new here. Microwaves have virtually remained unchanged for 30 years with the exception of Sharp's drawer concept.

I do not understand why someone would want this "commercial" MW over Panasonic's consumer MW's which are quite good, and which have a contemporary clean-lined look to boot. Does this commercial MW even have a sensor cook function? And, it is really small at .8 cu. ft. The OP should see in person what .8 cu. ft. is like. I also would rather not have a handle that sticks out. And it costs $333. You could get a Panasonic Prestige (consumer) MW for about $175, with 1250 watts, a revolving turntable, sensor cook, fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, 1.75 cu. ft. and a bunch of bells and whistles. Though the Prestige model is 19" deep, so perhaps that is the reason the OP prefers the 17" deep commercial model. That would make sense, but the OP should make sure that outweighs the other factors.
