Open Riser Stairs

I'd really like to have an open riser stair case in my new home, but I understand that they do not meet building code due to the 4-inch sphere rule. (A 4-inch sphere must not be able to pass between the risers)

There are two solutions that my architect suggested - we could put plexi between the risers and remove it after we get our CO , or you could put a very thin rod or aircraft cable between the risers. The rod would be set back several inches from the nosing of the stair and up from the tread as to restrict the passage of the 4 inch sphere. The thought is that if done correcty, your eye might not 'read' the rod or cable. Has any one tried this solution? Does anyone have any photos of open riser solutions that meet the 4-inch test? I'm leaning towards trying the rod, but would like to see some photos.
