Don't sell it....it's part of the house.
I have a similar sized one over a dresser in the guest bedroom.

Well, it is really important to me to preserve the history of the house.. BUT I really don't have anywhere to put this mirror..
There are other parts of the house like: septic problems, lack of insulation, plumbing issues, etc.... that I have to take care of and the money from this mirror could help..

Any idea of value?

I don't think that mirror will bring in enough to seriously impact those issues. It's a neat old mirror, but they're still reasonably common. The last one I bought was at Goodwill twenty years ago for two dollars. At least that old, more ornate too. You may find somebody who specifically wants it and will pay you handsomely, and if that happens it might be tempting. But, like Linda says, I'd keep it with the house rather than sell if for a hundred or two.

I don't feel quite as pessimic as Susie....but I really don't think at best you will realize as much as $250.
But...I also have bought lots of amazing things at auction, like the dropleaf solid plank walnut table wehre my computer is....$1.50.
It goes with the house....could it have been a stair case mirror? Is there a landing where it would fit. Such mirrors were often where the women checked to see that all was well before coming down stairs.

I'd guess the value would depend on what part of the country you're in. I'd love to find something this big for $200, much less $2!

I tend to agree with everyone else: keep it with the house. You won't get enough for it to make a difference with the repairs & later you will regret selling it. If for no other reason, it can be very hard to find furniture large enough to match the scale of some Victorian houses & this mirror was probably bought for a certain place. Similar ones that I've seen are usually above the front parlor mantle & 6x5 would be a perfect fit for a 12'+ ceiling. Where was it when you found it? There should be some seriously heavy duty hardware where it was mounted. Large mirrors also work very well in a narrow hallway.

It looks like somebody spruced it up with gold paint a while ago. It no longer has its original gilding or finish, which affects the value in the downward direction.

LOL antiquesilver. That's why I grabbed it very quickly. I had another beautiful old mirror, solid wood, wonderful carvings, but it went with the other party in a divorce. It's just that old mirrors aren't that mainline (at this point in time) with collectors, one sees them with some frequencies yet in household auctions going in boxes of other stuff, and many have silvering issues, or just 'cloudy' enough it rankles modern O/C tendencies when decorating. As with all old items, values can be impacted by locality and I live in an old river town, where antiques are very unappreciated for the most part and people are pretty naive as a whole as to what might be valuable up the road. You see old oaken mantles out on curbs for the garbage man to pick up sometimes.

I frequently see posts on this board wanting a value of what ever so they can sell the item, make a lot of money and remodel their kitchen or what ever.

Now, I happen to have a home full of antiques some dating to 1825. We purchased these items at fair maket value as furnishings. I have had a few "finds" but you have to have a sense about these things. Some day our kids will have to deal with all of this.

I am willing to bet (design and architecture background) that is an over-mantle mirror. Do you/did you have any fireplaces that were stripped out or covered up?

I agree, that was my impression as well.
