It's January 2014, how is your build? Part II
Comments (146)Renee- welcome! What part of the Midwest are you in? I'm in MN and we were encouraged to pick out everything very early too. It actually helped the process a lot. We also did white perimeter cabinets (white dove) and a stained center island, which is a few shades darker than the floors. Akshars & xc60- I really love those ceilings. Wow! So half of the appliances were delivered today, but not the exciting ones :) apparently the delivery driver missed half of them. Good job!! Ugh! Cleaning went great last night, but they will for sure have to come back. There was still a mess with people in there again today. The mantle was installed today. I didn't get any other pics because I was in a big rush after work before I had to get the kids. I'm getting very anxious about finalizing this process. Making sure all added expenses are in line, etc...and dealing with overages is becoming a reality. Even though we are supposed to close Tuesday, my husband coaches basketball and has literally 4 evening games next week. The other nights he has practice and I have a work event on Saturday...so I'm not sure how we'll make moving a priority....See MoreIt's February 2014, how is your build?
Comments (150)Oh boy… I second Autumn on the sore part. We painted this weekend. Master bed, bath & closets. ½ bath, laundry room, 2 Up beds, closets & full bath. Started spraying trim & doors. Got some lights going, more electric finish today. There are 100 plugs. Lol Idk how many switches, a bazillion. 40 some cans, and 40 lights. I swept and as soon as I was done, I’d have to sweep again. Cutting out all the drywall goop left in the boxes pain in the butt… I can’t wait to hear my electrician (who’s a friend of ours) complain about my main light fixtures. Oh boy… lol Hoosier ~ so glad they’re finally out of there! Whoop whoop! Good deal on the columns! Saftgeek ~ I’m the same way about knowing what we’re using. I know most of it, b/c I’ve picked it out, but I knew it when I picked it out, and now that info is out of my brain… lol I’ve been trying to write things down, but I can’t remember to do that either!! RB ~ so glad you are loving your new home! I can’t wait to be posting that also! Bummer on the propane/weather ;( it stinks here too! Hilltop ~ I’m an internet shopper for sure too!! I bought tons of stuff off build.com. Loved it. Maggie ~ sorry about the crazy glossy paint. I can’t stand anything glossy. Went flat with everything. I’ve got tons of people telling me I should have went semi gloss, but I just can’t stand shine…. Good luck :/ the hinges being painted seems crazy. I would definitely make them put new ones on!! I am with y’all on the anxiety thing. I just ate a whole roll of Thin Mints and yesterday just started crying for no reason. I am NOT a crier….Luckily I was already outside, so I just jumped in my truck and left for a bit. Just said I had to go get something. I just don’t usually lose it like that! Thank goodness we have each other to keep it together!! ...See MoreIt's June 2014, how is your build?
Comments (150)wow, haven't been on for a while-so much to see and hear! Encouraging in many ways and also gives me an idea of what to look out for. Got sticker shock from builder's estimate so back to looking at what we need, what would be nice to have, and what we'd like to have. To be honest, we were under pressure to get everything spec'd out and didn't really pay attention to cost. Some of it was easy to cut back on and we're working on other areas. Love our architect but he designed a challenging build(based on what we were looking for-main floor living and maximize ocean view). Fortunately our builder has worked with him before and he really has gone out of his way to help us with all the permits needed to build in this central coast California town. We got our minor use permit back in Feb. and have been waiting for building permits. Architect checked with county, someone put a hold on it for geologic reasons.Said person is now on vacation until June 30th. Architect followed up(geologic had been approved already in the MUP). Since we live in Pa we are very grateful for all the help Gary has done in dealing with the county. Once we get the building permits and construction loan approval(which should happen in the next few days) we're hoping to break ground. On the home front, we're waiting to see what happens with my husband's company's reorganization. Our initial plan was to move to AZ(where he has been working for the past year) but now we don't know if he'll be there, in NJ or unemployed. (he retired from his previous company last year so we'll be okay, but have more wiggle room if he's working. However, if he's not working we'll probably rent in CA-much easier to keep an eye on the build). This limbo thing is taking a toll, but we know it will be good in the end. Okay-probably way too much info for you, but gave me a chance to vent.Again I really appreciate reading everyone's stories-love the positive and supportive nature of this thread....See MoreIt's September 2014. Comments (95)Framer pointed out to me today that our architect's drawings assume 14" thick joists, but the joist company sent us 11 7/8", as indicated in the joist plan. Architect was on his way to the site to discuss changing out my "post" made of 2x6s for a steel post that's more attractive. So we discussed the fact that our house is going to be 6" shorter than planned. It's a problem because we wanted the house taller, but the city wouldn't allow it. On the upside, we can get an extra 6" of headroom on the 3rd floor, where it's desperately needed. On the downside, the floor of the 3rd floor is now 6" lower, which reduces our view. We'd have liked it to be a foot HIGHER. We would have made the lower floor ceilings higher. But now our 3rd floor deck is lower, so we'll need to build a platform up there so we can see over tree tops. Boo. Architect swears that the joist company pulled a last minute switch. He claims he had designed for a 12" joist, but the joist company spec'd 14" ones, and he spent an evening stretching all the joists in Autocad. But I looked at all our different versions of joist plans, and we never had 14" ones spec'd. I think this goes into the list of things he would have caught if he'd actually READ the joist plan. But, hey, more headroom on the 3rd floor means more useable floor space, since the ceilings are sloped. DH wouldn't be able to stand anywhere but right in the middle in the original plan. Musicgal, fall in Vermont is spectacular. But I think you're there a couple of weeks early....See Morejennybc
