Help with formal living area
Comments (41)Tho' hunting has never been a part of my life I find my friends collection of mounts beautiful in their own way. He has a garage full and that is where he spends a good portion of his time. I think they'll be great in this room but I wouldn't add too much furniture. Will it be just the two of you in the room usually? Then, I'd go for two really comfy leather chairs, a great rug, table with lamp, and some art on the walkway wall. IMO, your deer heads are preferable to contrived art marketed to match decor rather than pull your heartstrings....See MoreFormal Living Room Design Help
Comments (3)Two quick thoughts... One: if you would add dimensions to your sketch it would be helpful. It wasn’t apparent to me where the piano fit on your floor plan. Seeing the photo of your room is helpful, but still doesn’t give accurate information about wall space, doorways, and the size of the window. Two: I don’t play but that looks like a cramped, uncomfortable place for the piano. It seems to me to be the least likely place for listening and playing. If I understand you, you want four really comfortable chairs arranged in a circle around a beautiful cocktail table. I’m sure the pros here can suggest upholstery, a stunning rug, and a table to give you a beautiful space. Just please, please go to a furniture store and sit in any chair you are considering. I will never understand buying chairs, sofas, and mattresses online. Of course we have back issues in our family so I take a long time to purchase these items so we can sit in comfort. I also have a SIL who is a tall and muscular size so I buy dining room chairs for his comfort, not dainty darling chairs for looks. The secret to entertaining is comfort, personally, I would pick the upholstery first because the four chairs will be the big expense, then pick a wonderful rug to anchor your space. The piano needs to be moved to space where some cabinets or shelves can anchor and enhance it. My DD has a beautiful antique jelly cupboard in original blue paint by her baby grand to give height to the space and serve to store her music. In your case, it could also house cocktail napkins, trays, etc for your evening entertaining....See MoreFormal Living Room/Sitting Room Area Layout
Comments (5)Oh lucky you! I would LOVE a separate living room. Consider how you want to use the space. Preferably, something other than "a pretty place for people to see when they walk in before they go to the family room." While that's fine if that's what you really want it to be, it has become the reason people are (unfortunately, in my view) eliminating "formal" living rooms in new homes. It's SO nice to have an away room, which this could be for you. So, conversation? Reading? Any musicians in your family? How about board games? In my house this would be the reading/conversation/music room, so I would furnish it with 4 comfy chairs in a circle with a center table, maybe a bookshelf or two and a piano. What you do with it depends on the space you have....See MoreTurning Formal Dining Room into Sitting Area need help
Comments (32)Kristy - I think the new flooring you picked looks good. What do you think of the four club chair pic just posted below? Honestly, those set ups remind me of institutional settinfs like an airport lounge or a chain hotel lobby. I dont think they look all that inviting. I’d prefer two chairs and some other kind of seating....See MoreRelated Professionals
