Gas cooktop & single wall oven recs?

We are doing a kitchen remodel & have been researching a lot... There are only two appliance stores in town with a selection of higher end products & their salespeople don't seem to agree on which ones to recommend. Reading here on GW & also other online reviews & Consumer Reports, I'm almost afraid to buy anything because there are so many negative stories.

For the 36" gas cooktop, the top choices are Thermador, Viking, & DCS (not the pro versions for any of them). For the single wall oven, GE Monogram is a top choice b/c of the gliding racks, but their customer service sounds terrible. We also like the GE Profile single/double wall oven b/c in truth, we're not huge entertainers & having the smaller oven for the "one dish at a time" style we have seems to be more energy efficient. The Kenmore Elite gets great reviews from Consumer Reports but other reviewers state a problem with self-cleaning, & the Electrolux is a top contender b/c it "looks nice" & I've had good customer service with them in the past.

Any feedback on the brands I mentioned would be much appreciated, as well as other recommendations I may have overlooked. Thanks!

36" gas cooktop--Wolf for me. Hands down. I strongly considered the DCS cooktop, but then changed my mind to Wolf for better dual-stack burners and a better burner configuration. In the end, I decided to go to a rangetop instead of cooktop to have all the burners the same BTUs and have them be more powerful. I cook a lot and from scratch and entertain frequently.

After researching for almost a year, I'm getting the non-Icon Elux ovens. I'll probable use a cold oven cleaner instead of self-clean to avoid the issues any wall oven can have with self-clean

Thanks for your feedback breezygirl. I've been reading lots of positive reviews of Wolf today, about their solid construction & especially about their customer service. Regarding cleaning the surface of the rangetop, how easy/user friendly would you rate it? Does it scratch easily?

As for the wall ovens, you've clearly put the time into researching them... Good luck - I hope you enjoy them! I am going to look at the Electrolux ovens in person tomorrow at a store an hour and a half from here. I hope that will solidify my decision...

This is one of the choices I'm going to need to make. My challenge is that I'd like a 36" range top (thinking blue star) but want my oven to heat up faster than a 36" oven so I'm leaning toward two 30" ovens (one steam). A 36" oven is quite large considering we have a double oven with an old 40" electric stove right now and that serves our purposes perfectly - we are only two. However my main reason for getting a 36" range top is to have a landing strip for items coming out of the oven and so if I go this route I'd need the ovens to be very near the range top, which is probably possible, but I'm not yet quite sure. I also like the fact that with a 36" bluestar range top you get two 22k burners. Anyway, this is just an idea of some of the thought processes I'm thinking about that may give you something to think about as well.

Doing a cooktop and wall oven is more expensive than doing a range. Also, placing a wall oven under a cooktop makes it be lower to the ground than the one in the range. It's harder to get stuff in and out of. Your counter costs more because you're now paying for the whole section plus a cutout rather than two pieces on either side. Traditionally this has only been done because somone wanted a gas cooktop with an electric oven. With modern dual fuel appliances available, most of that reason has gone by the wayside. I'd strongly suggest exploring an induction range rather than gas. It's as responsive as gas, but with less heat lost into the home.

Single/Double Wall Oven w/downdraft cooktop

I have never found a downdraft system that will work with the cooktop & oven underneath. There simply isn't room for the mechanism unless you slide a telescoping downdraft so far back behind the cooktop that it is completely ineffective (several inches). If anyone knows of any other system, I would love to hear it. But I don't think you can find something that will do what you want, gapch.

Thermador 30" single wall oven, snd gas cooktop.

Hi folks, We recently found an open box bargain on a Thermador gas cooktop and single wall oven. It's the 30" 5 star burner has cooktop (SGS305FS) and 30" single electric wall oven (POD301J). We have a week left on the return period and would like to know if they're really all that. Got the both for just under 4000 so financially it was a good deal. However, the reviews aren't so great. I'm hoping to hear owner experiences about the products, the service and support. Your comments are much appreciated! TIA!!

I switched my plan from a cooktop (would have been Wolf) to the Capital Cularian rangetop. My ex-GC has a Wolf cooktop in his kitchen. I'm not sure if his wife cooks a lot, but I know she does some. Their cooktop didn't look scratched to me. I didn't get to examine really close up though.

Your last post said rangetop. If you're thinking of going in that direction, I can tell you that member Rhome410 has a 48" Wolf. She loves it, but says it scratches. She cooks a tremendous amount everyday. Rhome had the GE Monogram ovens, but had a terrible time with them not holding a steady temperature--bad engineering. She eventually got GE to take them back. Her story makes me very leery of their ovens.

I don't have a high-end appliance store in my area so I know how it feels to take a day trip to look at appliances! Please report back on what you decide. Good luck!
