Independent vs Prestige Vent Hood

First post here. Thanks to the forum, I've decided on an American Range 30" and now need to pick a hood to go over it. I dont have room for more than a 30" wide and am looking at the Independent and the Prestige in the standard 18" high pro style stainless. They look comparable basically (solid construction, baffle filter, lined). Any opinions on either would be appreciated.

Also it seems that each are standard with a 1200cfm blower though a 600 cfm is an option - any reason not to go with the 1200? The price difference is inconsequential. I pan fry and blacken occasionally so it might be nice to have for those times. I dont yet know of the make up air requirements in NJ though.

Hi there,

The extra CFM is certainly handy, especially if you really like to cook. The downside is that it will be loud. Then again, if a hood is not making noise, it probably isn't doing it's job, either.

Some may say that the 1200 CFM "may" be a bit much, but, then again, the speeds are adjustable, so, there's really no issue there, either.

FYI: "Independent" makes all hoods for WOLF Range Corp. Very good product, extremely well built, as well! They use thick stainless steel, have a ton of color options, and a really good bang-for-the-buck. I sell them, and I certainly stand behind them. I like their products very much.

Once again the power of the hood depends on how much duct run and how many turns, increasing power does not necessarily increase performance. A simple duct run requires less power if the hood is properly sized for your cooking product. A good choice might be the Kobe pro hood 1000 cfm multiple speeds and quieter than most.

One of the reasons I did not go with Modernaire is that I wanted seamless construction. They offered true seamless at a huge upcharge. I am now bemused to see that they offer "simulated" seamless construction. Somewhere along the way I read that "TIG" construction is best -- you might want to find out whether whomever you want to go with uses TIG. I think there are several good blower/motor suppliers. Independent, EBM Pabst (which is what Modernaire uses for their internal motors, and others. I needed an assembly that vents straight back. Prestige got many favorable reviews -- Trevor seemed to think it was among the best too. Ultimately I went with Vogler Copper for the hood -- their prices were good and they were able to build a custom liner to accommodate the Prestige 1200 CFM unit. I have not gotten my hood yet but am expecting the photos for final sign off tomorrow. Don't neglect to look at smaller suppliers who can build in the liner/ motor assembly of your choice.

tanem: it's a fair question. Thanks, sjeff and stephanie for vouching for me. I am a big fan of MA--but also of other small dedicated hood companies. It is based on my personal experiences--I only began making these observations after buying my MA hood (at full price!), having already owned a VAH hood. I do feel strongly about this subject, but it's mostly because I feel I can speak to a "minority" opinion that otherwise might get drowned out by the VAH crowd. Realize that VAH sells hugely more hoods than MA, Prestige, Independent, Metallo Arts, etc. Therefore, on a forum like this, questions about "what hood should I buy" tend to be flooded with VAH owners. They are happy with their hoods, which is great, but most of them can only speak from their experience with their one VAH hood, or at most, with their VAH hood compared with their prior OTR MW or downdraft unit. Thus, the VAH looks good to them in comparison. I had the same reaction going from my lousy downdraft jenn air, to our VAH. What I can speak to, that many others cannot, is how the VAH compares to a custom product like the MA hood. Not only speaking from experience, I've even tried (perhaps amateurishly) to quantify my opinion by measuring sound levels generated by my two hoods. That is one of the few posts I know of that attempts to do more than just offer blind opinion. I will say it again, I do not have any financial stake in MA, receive no special consideration (and let me tell you, after our kitchen reno, I am NOT going to be in the market for many years to come). What I do hope is that small American companies, who still take pride in their products, will continue to compete successfully with the big corporate guys. And, I will state it again as clearly as I can: it's not just Modern-Aire! If you are looking for a hood, you really owe it to yourself to check out Prestige, Independence, and Metallo Arts too. And I am confident that there are other companies out there as well. And, finally, I would never claim that someone who in the end chooses a VAH, or a Broan, or a Viking, etc etc made a bad choice--hey, I own one! So, tanem, please take what I say with many grains of salt, but know that I'm not shilling or spamming. Thanks.

I have seen Applianceguru repeatedly on the Appliances and Kitchens Forums denigrate VAH for some reason. He/she has some kind of ax to grind. If some people find a VAH hard to clean, OK, they should report it on this forum. I love my VAH, and don't find it at all hard to clean. But the comment about "surface area" makes no sense. Where did that factoid come from, and how is it measured, and how does Applianceguru know the VAH's surface area compared to the hundreds of other hoods on the market? What about all the hoods that are glass, or are curved, or are huge rectangles, or are island hoods, or are chimney hoods--how does Applianceguru conclude their surface area is smaller compared to a VAH? I would disregard that comment as nonsensical. Anyway... I love my VAH so much that if I had to move and redo another kitchen, I wouldn't get anything else! The "squirrel cage" technology just makes logical sense to me. Mine is very quiet, but my ductwork only has one bend and then a straight shot outside in about 7'. That minimal ductwork helps a lot with the quietness. I can't comment on a Viking hood--don't know anything about it. I do have to agree with Applianceguru about the Independent hoods. Independent used to make all the Wolf hoods, until Wolf decided it wanted to make its own hoods, ending their arrangement with Independent in Dec. '06. If I were to choose a baffle hood, I'd get a Wolf or Independent.

I am not an expert but since no one has responded .... I put in a Fantech inline fan FG6XL and am very happy with it. You cannot hear the fan, however at top speed I do hear the air movement. We think that much of that is caused from the HVAC guy screwing up our grill housing when he put it in and this has not been fixed yet. Install is very easy for any orientation. I did not put in a silencer because the online store where I bought it said that if your vent pipe is insulated it is the same as a silencer, but then my fan is only 483 cfm. There is no hood, only the grill, because the cooktop is in front of the window(it's a very small kitchen with very limited layout options. Have you checked on the need for make up air? You are pulling out a lot of CFM's and in some places code requires fresh air intake to maintain air quality.

A plus you might consider w/the Prestige unit is that the fan control is an infinite control knob vs. a low/med/high setting on many other brands. This could be very nice especially with a higher cfm blower.

As a soon to be 36" American Range owner, I am very interested in this thread. Prestige is new to me. I believe it is made by Franke which probably ups the price, especially if it is coming from Europe. (Franke has a sink line made in Canada - the Kindred - which is much better priced for this reason). I wonder if the same is true for the hoods.
I need a hood liner with 1200 cfm to be ducted out with 2 90Âº bends. (My contractor says exterior 45Âº bends are bad due to rain water infiltration.)Then it has to go 20' up to the roof.
Does anyone have any experience with the Prestige, the noise or sone info? Is there another model anyone is familiar with as a liner?

My appliance guy told me Prestige is made in NJ and that their prices are coming down in the near future. No idea if this is true. Just passing on the info.

Regarding 1200cfm vs. 600cfm - In addition to what Guadalupe said about the ductwork, you want to make sure your duct has the right size diameter for the exhaust. An Independent 600cfm hood needs an 8" duct; an Independent 1200cfm hood needs a 10" duct (I don't know about Prestige). What size duct do you have? If you have a smaller duct than what is required, you will increase the noise substantially, and decrease the efficiency of the exhaust. Some manufacturers even void the warranty if the duct used is smaller than they've specified.

I don't know about Prestige, but I do know that Independent used to make the hoods for Wolf (Wolf would just stick the Wolf badge on the Independent hood). Wolf decided to make its own hoods a year or so ago, but since Wolf is very careful about quality, I think it's a sign in Independent's favor that Wolf had previously chosen Independent to make the Wolf hoods.

Wow, that would be wonderful if the price comes down a bit. The 1200cfm Prestige liner is about $1700 right now - the same price as a complete wall-mount of some other brands. It does seem a bit high to us.
