Shampoos/Conditioners that Protect Hair Color?

Are hair care products really effective in making your hail color last? I can see where a leave-in conditioner with UV protection might help protect it from the sun fading it, but do shampoos and rinse-out conditioners really do anything to protect your chemical hair color? I've tried (been sold) a number of different products that don't seem to me to make any noticeable difference. Any recommendations for products that really do work?

I don't know if they work or not, but I use them. Gotta use something, right?

Look for a shampoo that doesn't have sodium laurel sulfate;
it's a drying agent that strips the protective layers from your hair.
I found one at Dollar Tree.

2.
When you color or touch up your hair, use a plastic cap, even if the product doesn't call for it;
using the cap will keep keep oxygen from contacting the colorant & oxidizing (stripping) the color.

I have hair that's fair-colored, naturally curly, & fine to medium textured, so it's easy to damage, & naturally dry in our hot & dry to hot & humid climate (central Arkansas). I was told I needed something with a lot of natural moisturizing ingredients, and I started buying TCB ethnic and Aussie Moist shampoos & conditioners again after using many different expensive salon brands for a year or more. But, I love Dove's new 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioner! It's great for when I stay with relatives & in-laws, or on the go (i.e. at gyms & public pools) all of which where showers & bathroom time are limited.

i'm not a fan but my mother used to use pantene... to me, since i wash my hair first, then a bit of conditioner while i finish washing, then rinse everything.. dosen't take that much time... actually, my fave is the tube that comes with the temp coloring by clairol...it only takes a dot for me (i have short hair)

If you want more volume, but don't want to go the 'volumizing shampoo route', try reading the ingredients in the shampoo you usually use. If you see sodium laurel sulphate--immediately toss the bottle in the trash, even if it's almost full. SLS is terrible for both hair and scalp. It's clinically used to produce rashes to test medications for them. It strips your hair, makes it thin and unhealthy. And unfortnately, it's in many, many shampoos. Why? It makes them foam. Totally there for 'show'. Since most of us are adults and making elaborate hair sculptures isn't a necessary part of shampooing for us--we don't need SLS. I use an organic shampoo--it doesn't suds like the regular supermarket shampoos do, BUT it cleans my hair beautifully, and unbelievably, my hair is way, way thicker and healthier now--at age 60--than it was when I was 50 (and still using supermarket shampoo). Just switching to a SLS free shampoo will make a noticeable difference in the thickness/health of your hair. Of course, you have to wait patiently for the new, healthy hair to grow out. And you need to educate yourself about SLS--it's one of those components that goes by many names. Seriously, though, I don't think my hair has been this healthy for about 40 years. WELL worth the extra $$$ for a better shampoo.

I asked my hair stylist that same question, although my obsession is with the "Kardashian" hair. My hair is blond and wavy... It'll never get that long, unfortunately. She told me that they use a shine oil, they flat iron and even the Kardashians use human hair extensions. Certain ethnic groups (Asian, Indian and Mexican/Spanish) for example, have individual hair strands that are naturally thicker, stronger, and the hair as a whole grows faster. Dark hair also reflects more light, so it looks super shiny and healthier. The majority of human hair extensions are Indian remy hair - the hair naturally grows faster. A lot of the commercials you see show dark hair for this reason. In the Garnier commercial with the blond, she more than likely has extensions, although if you have "virgin" hair (no color ever, no perm, wash every few days, no hot tools) you may be able to grow out blond hair. I just wear my extensions when I want long hair - it's too hard to take care of it when it's naturally long. LOL

I use Aveda Color Conserve , have been for years, it works well for me.

I have not found yet a proper sunblock spray to help protect hair against the sun though.

I don't think they carry it there. I think Target of all places has been stocking a few of these higher end brands. Or some higher ends salons carry it. They have a leave in protectant, S and C and hairspray. They are sulfate free etc. Nice line. Little spendy, but worth it. You use very little which was my mistake. I went through a bottle too quickly. LOL. I was like Seriously? then my stylist told me to use WAY less.

Goldwell products. Definitely not cheap, but you don't need to use a lot. My natural hair colour is (was) auburn - so is now coloured that shade - and as we all know, red fades fast - and my Irish heritage, very thick hair grows like a weed. This stuff is seriously great. I live in Canada and buy it from the colourist - I can only assume it is easy to find in the U.S. (or maybe that is just me because every time I visit the U.S. I am ballistic at the stuff you have that we don't).

I love the Pureology products. I alternate then with Bumble &Bumble.

I have long hair and we play a lot with the color.

I always though salon products were a way too expensive but I finally decided to invest in a couple of giant bottles. I paid around $80 or $90 for those first two bottles. I found that you use so much less of the good stuff that those bottles lasted me two years plus! That's pennies on the dollar I was paying when I was spending around 10 dollars a month on drugstore products.

I've found in my area at least the salon products are cheaper in my salon than they are are Target etc.

Rosewest, I hope this helps. My tip stops you from stripping the life out of your hair.
I buy a decent brand of shampoo, like Pantene, then I take half of it out and replace that with water and shake.
I am over 60 and wash my hair every day and color it too. It is shiny and full of body. I just blow dry it straight and use no hair spray.
