I would love some opinions this lamp. Antique? PLEASE?

Hello, I was given a lamp that belonged to my grandmother about a year ago after she passed, and I just ran back across it the other day. I have searched and searched the internet looking for something that resembles it but I have found NOTHING that even comes close. I am not sure of its orgin, age, or anything. The globe or shade is a very thick, transparent,and green glass (or glass like)and looks to me to be in the shape of a brain, my friends have had said it looked like a bug and an evil face (i dont see that one) lol.. The lamp itself is very heavy with odd decoration around the base, now the decoration does look like little faces to me.... ANYWAY PLEASE take a look at the pictures and if able, offer some knowledge about this lamp, it would be very much appreciated. As you all can very well see, I have NO CLUE. THANKS IN ADVANCE

hmm, now that's an interesting mystery.
Looks similar to carnival glass to me.
At one angle one pic looks like a frame that would hold a globe?
I wonder it if might be a handcrafted piece from a glass blower who was just doing it for kicks?
The lamp style itself is similar to a banker's (desk) lamp.
Front view of glass portion almost looks like a wrinkly dog to me (hound, perhaps)?
Side view tho, where glass is most smooth, almost had a budda-esque look...
Puzzling indeed!

Hi I believe it is a scarab lamp, are there any makers marks? This site has a lamp close to yours. Not saying yours is a Tiffany but the look is close in style.may be another company who coppied Tiffany in style. scarab lamp may be a good place to start your search. just type scarab lamp in the search field - www.macklowegallery.com good luck

Alot of people will laugh and skoff at this -- but here goes anyway! I have done this on several pieces of furniture-- It does work. Once you have the glove drawers totally finish free--Raw wood- Carefully take the tops off -- Take your time -- they may be screwed, nailed, tacked, or glued. Any combo of these may be present. If this scares you may need to talk to a "in-person" restorer. Just remember they were in pieces once -- and with care they can be disassembled. Once you have the CLEAN/FINISH-free tops. You can actually lay them on the warm grass with the bow up -- put a heavy object on top and check them often and do not leave them out in the rain -- only warm sunny days work here. I have done 2 dropleaf walnut table sides this way. Trouble is that walnut in particular will actually bow the opposite way if you leave it out too long. Been there done that!! Once it is flat again -- bring it in out of the sun and moisture (which comes out of the ground (unless you live in a desert)). AS soon as you can --- seal ( with finish of your choice) BOTH SIDES of the wood. I know Im am risking all sorts of doubters here -- but I have done this at least 4-5 times on various parts and pieces. Sometimes it has taken two days in the sun out on my (flat space) lawn. Only walnut has reversed its warp by leaving out too long.I just turned the part over and did it over while watching it closer. Oak seemed to unwarp and stay where it should. Good luck -- I know this sounds overly simplistic -- but IT WORKS!!

Hope you enjoyed your cruise cpartist! I valued your opinions in my previous thread so I was hoping to see what you thought about my newest change. I've pretty much already come up with a concussion and an attempt at the drawing (pretty poor attempt!). Hardest part is the uneven ceilings between rooms and the need for the deco panel on the kitchen side. I think by making that wider, eliminating the cubes and turning the flanked cabinets into two cabinets (with the upper the same size as the ones that go across counter), I have accomplished what I was trying to achieve. More glass on the kitchen side since the passthrough cabinets became so short when I raised them and it allowed me to keep passthrough opening at 66". I hope!!!!

Never I implied these lamps are cheap:) (mine are..relatively...since I don't buy new ones)I implied that rugs are more expensive..:) But if you like them and he doesn't care that much-that's all I needed to know. I quite like the shades..i imagine they give a good light.. Does it have furniture yet? the guest bedroom? tan, vibrant blue green, black...a bit of reddish gold... interesting thing-I happen to have a Pinterst Board dedicated to these/similar colors.. what's bad it's mostly inspiration pics of pallettes..just a few products..and products -I'm not sure he'd like let me see what I can try and put together.. say if to keep bedding cream.. and say smth like this for the pillow (btw bedding can be dark too. depends on his style, furniture..etcetera. but I agree to keep it simple. oh no I just remembered! one of my friends refused to sleep on dark sheets said she needs pastel colors. but a) happened to me once, and b) she's a girl. (I know I'm too. we actually have really similar tastes. That's why I was so shocked with this pastel thing about bedding.) so maybe cream, just in case. or two sets-light one and dark one, as mood strikes, and whoever visits) and say these are some curtains then.. ..maybe smth like this for a rug? it's leather-twined..I like how color picks up a bit of this flame impression from artwork and lamps..and it's masculine..suitable for high traffic..relatively inexpensive.. then the bedding gets to be say, pebble or ivory ..and green, you repeat very easily. a plant..maybe couple books can be some pothus or jade..these never die.. (these are neither pothus nor jade lol..I just liked the colors, green plus terracotta. very unique! lol)

Krista, those are fabulous pictures. Thank you so much! I love my Mme Isaac Pereire as well, she is one of my favourite scents (and flowers), although she is more of a shrub than a climber for me because of the amount of winter dieback! Your weather would be similar to mine so I will plan for Lady Emma Hamilton near the front of the border. I'll be able to smell her better that way anyways!! For Munstead Wood, if it is thorny and not too large, do you think that a large pot would be a good home? Some roses just seem to do better in pots than others ... and thank you both for the tips on Brother Cadfael. Whenever online descriptions say thornless, I am always sceptical. Very few are actually thornless. But he sounds like a rose to have anyways, large blooms and great fragrance ... he's a big one though, right? The way descriptions go, it sounds like he should almost be a specimen plant ... he's too big for the front/mid garden, but to put him at the back would mean you can't smell him ... do you think that is accurate? (as context, I have very few "specimen" plants ... not enough space ... but I do have Evelyn who is a fairly large plant here and I put her at a corner of the garden so she is the closest I have to a specimen plant. She's a bit of a diva afterall. I could find a similar situation for Brother Cadfael if that would suit him well). As I'm having trouble deciding between Young Lycidas and Falstaff, perhaps I'll hold off on that choice until next year. Every time I see photos, I flip flop in my mind which one I like better lol. I can't choose!

Good call, Wendy! The basic lamp body style matches. But a scarab is a type of beetle. What the heck is that on the OPs lamp I wonder?? I've seen some funky beetles in my day growing up on a farm, but none were so...rippled. Maybe it's a rare variety bug? ;D

Wendy is right on....it's a scarab lamp. It appears to be the same period as the Tiffany scarab lamp and very likely there is a maker's mark somewherer on it.
A scarab is a type of beetle, I believe a dung beetle is a type of scarab beetle. for some reason the figure of a beetle often appears in ancient Egyptian carvings and jewelry.
My hunch is that the discovery of King Tut's tomb sparked a revival in the popularity of the form, and stylized scarabs appeared in many forms. I have a scarab bracelet made from scarabs carved from semi precious stones.
It's a great lamp!!

Thanks Lindac It was the first thing that came to mind as I have seen some examples in the past. And I do know like you said the discovery of King Tut's tomb did spark many companies to produce pieces in egyptian likeness even in porcelain & ceramics. I also have such bracelets as yours & they are beautiful.

Wanted to thank each of you for your comments... you all have no idea how much it helped. I have found that the lamp IS indeed a scarab desk lamp, as far as being able to tell if it is an authentic Tiffany, well thats still to be found out... I was reading it is easier to prove suspected Tiffany lamps as a fraud then it is to prove actually genuine. Seems there are so many variations to the lamps that were made during that time. Some have stamps, some don't, Some have this or that and the next one will not... VERY AGGRAVATING lol... In any case you all put me on the right track and in the correct direction and I REALLY appreciate it. Ill let you all know what becomes of it :P

Glad you got some answers. Scarabs are in U>S. also. I just wrote & asked if anyone knew what my deep turquoise green beetles were, look like a huge bumble bee & they don't want me under the apple tree. I wondered if they would sting me. They get quite noisy they also die under the trees, I thought they were getting drunk on the few apples that cook on the tree.

someone said what a way to die & that they lay their eggs
& then die so I have several,unless the mower got them up. Hummers had been feeding on the mushy apples too. I opened 1 that critters hadn't & ate a bit & it tastes just like you baked it. Same person said that hummers wouldn't be hurt by them. They are very pretty pests!! And you don't have to go to Africa to find them.
