Walk-out basement exterior?

As I gradually assemble all the info I need to build my house, I've come to the problem of making the exterior of a walk-out basement look somewhat nice, without going nuts on the cost. Many I've seen 'stair-step' the sides, so that the siding follows the grade in several big steps. I don't really care for this, although I'm sure it saves some on concrete for the foundation. I'm thinking of having a full basement made, all concrete, which will result in a 10' tall concrete wall in the back. The house will be small and sort of 'folk Victorian', and in a rural setting. I'm thinking either brick or stone veneer. I'm just curious what others have done, and the relative costs involved. Whatever I do will be DIY, and may have to wait until sometime after we move in. Ideas? Suggestions?
