Anyone put up tile chair rail w/o tiling wall?

I want to do a tile backsplash above the vanity top with the same accent strip (@6") that will be in the shower. Not sure if I should tie it together somehow? Would just a chair rail with out any other tile on the wall look silly? It would be in the toilet cove area and a wall with a window that hooks up to the vanity. My room is 9 x 8 with an 8' ceiling.

Your suggestions would be great!

IMO, every architectural element should have a purpose, or at least, a plausible purpose. So a tile chair rail without any purpose would look a bit out of place. What type of 'purpose'? Capping a tile wainscoting, dividing one color of paint/wallpaper from another, etc. Could you do a plain inexpensive field tile below the chair rail? Or use a wooden chair rail instead?

Or even do beadboard below the chair rail. I agree with sweeby-- just doing the chair rail ceramic, stone OR wood-- out in the middle of an open wall would look strange.

I believe that this particular line of tile is outside of their normal line and made exclusively for Lowes. The color is not the same as their normal line of tile and they just don't make some of the pieces. They CAN special order anything you can get at a regular tile store - ie AO's ice white subway tile (with all of the accessory pieces), but at about 6 times the price of their gloss white in stock subway tiles (more expensive than local tile stores). Lowes "gloss white" is not available anywhere but Lowes and only in the pieces they stock. Believe me, I went several rounds with them on this in more than one store. What they have in stock is what they have for their very inexpensive line of tile. kaypeakay, have you priced out just using daltile rittenhouse square for the whole project? I've seen some really great prices on that stuff posted here. For some reason AO (except in stock at Lowes) is much more expensive. Maybe you won't have to mismatch.

We used travertine with an onyx border and onyx liner to 42"H on the wall above the vanity with a large mirror in the hall bath. No problems at all, and it looks very nice. IMHO, the 4" backsplash looks too small. Besides, sink splashes and toothbrush drips can easily pass over the 4" backsplash. BTW, have the granite guy caulk the countertop to the tile, matching the countertop, not the tile grout. It looks better. For our master bath, we're planning on using a 6" granite backsplash atop the granite countertop, rather than the wall tile atop the countertop. It's purely for a different look.

I got a rail system as a test and took it back. The reason was perhaps personal taste. When I tried the rail system, I had wall cabinets mounted 18" up from the counter. Altho the rail and it's gismos could fit there, it was a big pain to put things into the system and take them out. So, taking a bottle out of the upper level of a two tier rack hit the bottom of the cabinet as did tools in and out of a tool holder. It couldn't fit my favorite brand of paper towels in the size roll I use and I don't use the really huge rolls. I think a rack would work for me if the cabinet spacing was at 24" or if I didn't have any wall cabinets. I don't think I could do the magnetic knife holders mounted under standard height cabinets either. After remodeling, I only had linear space for a small rack and chose to use the space for hanging pans.

I wanted to post some after photos and thank everyone who took the time to comment. It turns out that the wall was "indented" when we removed the chair rail so my DH has spent several weekends to build it back up with joint compound and texture it to blend in with the walls. It was a painfully tedious process (first trying to do it by hand, then with a sponge, then with spray-on compound that dribbled everywhere, and finally with a trowel lightly loading dabs of compound on). If you look closely you can still tell, but it's not as glaring as it was several iterations ago. Suffice to say, we are thrilled to be done with sanding, priming, texturing, and painting! Now, I need to figure out what wall decor to put up as the removal of the chair rail makes it a much easier space to deal with! Any and all advice would be appreciated. I was thinking of doing a photo gallery near the front entry, but that is a HUGE wall and I don't know that I can put photos high enough where you can still see them but not so low that the wall looks off-balance. Forgive the quality of the photos, taken without a flash on my iPhone.

ah, yes, I was kinda thinking such. I am on my own with this project as DH says "do what ever you like, it's all yours, baby"... which can be a bit of a curse. Would you go with just the solid surface backsplash (to match the vanity top) or do the tile accent? I can't believe the blessing that this forum has been. The kitchen forum saved me 5 years ago and the bath forum is doing it now. I have been reading/lurking here for @ 3 years now. My DH says I have a "thirst for knowledge" LOL
