Alternatives to ice machine? Ice maker in full-size wine cooler?
Comments (2)Hi I don't have answers sorry. I just read your post and this is an issue for us as well. We have a side by side with ice/water in the door but the space is too narrow for a family member who is wheelchair bound to be able to access most of the items in it. We are going to get an all refrigerator all freezer pair because they will be wide enough for him to get close enough to get things...and the Whirlpool sidekicks have slide out shelves. But none of these have ice/water in the door. I love my crushed ice and not to mention the accessiblity of the ice and water in the door. I thought about an ice machine but then my husband told me that they have to be cleaned often because the temperature in an ice machine allows bacteria to form versus an ice machine in a freezer? I don't know much about it...just started researching. I don't understand why the manufacturers don't offer ice and water in the door on all refrigerator all freezer pairs. I saw there are some refrigerators with top freezers that have water in the door....See MoreIce Maker
Comments (17)Glad you're fixed up the way you wanted it. Question about the machine..... Can you say how long it takes from start-up to produce, say, the first five lbs of ice? And/or how long it took to produce the full-hold of 25lbs? Reason for question is that I have one location that only has people in it once a week or so. Rather than leave the machine on all the time, I would more likely only turn it on only when people are there......if we didn't have to wait too long for usable quantity of ice to be available. ( Refrig. ice-maker isn't much good that way.)...See MoreReplacing an Under Counter Kitchenaid Ice Maker....With What?
Comments (10)Manitowoc is definitely the maker of the current unit. The older 315I was made by Scotsman. Scotsman is the best bang for your buck IMHO. They have always been reliable (for an icemaker, that is). The DCE33 is basically the same machine they have been making forever. The SCC30 and SCC50 models are the newer, more efficient version that have been out for about 3 years now. Noise is tough to say. Icemakers are noisy by nature, ice is constantly falling into a bin of varying fullness. The pump if needed will make noise when in use. I don't think you will be able to discern noise levels between the units....See MorePortable ice maker
Comments (14)True. I can think of several uses for large amounts of ice (what's your drought status?) on a farm. Besides just cold drinks, tailgating and picnics coolers. ;) It doesn't sound like it really matters to you where it goes, starting with your current situation where you put the old one out at night, like an overactive cat. :) In that case it comes down to the tradeoffs of things like ease of cleaning, ease of installation and maintenance, going to the garage for ice (though you can put a small insulated ice bucket in your fridge or freezer to cut down on trips to fill every glass of tea) vs. having the noise in the kitchen and losing the kitchen storage for the machine, etc. BTW, as an aside, we had a bag of party ice for a recent occasion, and I asked one of the girls to put some in the ice bucket on the drinks table. She used the ice from the freezer--and thus all the refills as well. So the party ice got dumped in the freezer in the ice drawer (twice again the size of the ice maker basket). The bag had what looked like hand chipped ice, fairly large pieces for the most part, though I'm sure there must be a machine that mimics that. Anyway, the evaporator in the freezer makes the ice clump up but it's pretty easy to break up. The party ice has required an ice pick from the first, and I'm not happy about it being wielded in my freezer. I'm going to just dump it when I get a chance. Moral: Choose a machine that doesn't make the ice clump. :)...See Moreakcorcoran
