Miele induction cooktop has hair-line rings on the surface

Does anyone else have this problem with their Miele induction cooktop?

We noticed the first mark - a faint outline, hardly visible, no wider than a hairline, in the shape of a spill - in the first week of owning the cooktop. We tried to scrub it off, polish it off, no luck. We figured it was an imperfection in the glass. It did not appear to penetrate the surface, or resemble a crack in any way, so we ignored it.

Then we got another. And another. Now we have five or six blemishes - all of them very finely etched outlines in the shape of a spilled liquid, the largest is the size of a small pancake. The surface of the glass is still smooth and unbroken, but the marks cannot be washed or rubbed off.

I'm going to call the manufacturer, but I thought I would check here first. Anyone have any experience with this?

I had these on my cooktop as well. I think it happens when salted water splashes out of a pot while boiling pasta or something else, but I'm not really sure. However, I was able to polish mine off with Ceramabrite and a microfiber cloth. It took a little elbow grease, but it worked. Oddly, I've had the cooktop for over a year now and while I still see a spill like that occasionally, there have never been as many as during that first few weeks. If you do call Miele and they have anything useful to add, I'd be interested in hearing it.

I had a few too, but I also gently (but firmly) cleaned them with a damp microfiber cloth and some bar keepers friend (also great on Le Creuset). I agree with cj47...I think it is splashed boiling salted water or broth or soup. Let us know what Miele says. Appreciate it. Btw, I love, love, love my Miele Induction cooktop (36"). I will Never, never, never return to gas!!!! ;)

lalitha - thank you, that is exactly the kind of thing I want to know. I have to travel by ferry to Vancouver to actually see a Gaggenau. The miele can be seen locally but I don't like the way it looks quite as much. I have tried a few gardenweb searches but didn't have much luck. I'll try again. I will call before I go to Vancouver and see if anyone actually has an operating gaggenau. The promo ends Sunday, so I've got to decide. Have you loved your gaggenau? any complaints? manifestkitchen - I think the promo may just be in Canada. Esentially, it is free 10 year warranty if you buy the base priced appliance. Here we have a funny three tier price system based on the years of warranty. Mind you, the prices are way higher than in the US anyway. Don't know how they get away with that, maybe we are just to polite to complain.

In Austrailia warenty was only 1 year bought 2013 just under 12,000 AUD dollars it never works latest quote to reapair 1600 dollars , over the past year I spent 3160 on diferent reapairs down time nearly 7 months ( lucky I had my $200 plug in fryer ) I'm going to throw my gaggenau cooktop it in the trash & buy a new cook top defenetly not gaggenau . I do have the oven & the steamer they do look good , but for a functioning kichen , a kichen that prepares meals for a family gaggenau is not the product no matter how healthy one is one still what's its products to work

There are a lot of factors to consider in choosing a hood one has to live with, and there are myriad threads here agonizing over aspects of this topic. Let me try to raise again, historically writing, a point needing consideration when comparing VaH to Broan. In this comment, I give VaH the benefit of the doubt that their specified hood plus blower achieves 600 CFM in free air, and that the comparable Broan blower has to be 900 CFM (rated in free air, 600 CFM when installed in the hood with the combination in free air). At this point there appears to be equivalence, but we haven't considered duct pressure loss (likely modest) and make-up air pressure loss (potentially nearly anything depending on design, but where combustion appliances are present, must not exceed fractional inches of water (hundredths of Pascals). With added pressure loss, one has to look at the respective fan curves to see what the actual air flow will be. As it happens, for the only data I have seen from VaH, their squirrel cage fans have a drop in flow rate with pressure loss that is greater than typical Broan (or most other) blower fans. This means that with additional loss, the Broan hood/blower will flow more air than the VaH. This may or may not be different enough to matter. But you still need around 90 CFM per square foot of hood aperture to be sure that the effluent that gets into the aperture leaves via the duct and not by spilling out into the kitchen.

It's exciting to read all these great reviews and tips! My Miele 36" induction cooktop gets installed tomorrow and I'm so excited to start playing with it. I didn't look at the Bosch but was tempted by Wolf because I liked the slightly textured surface. In the end I chose Miele ovens (I was much pickier about oven features so this was a harder decision for me) so matched the cooktop because I couldn't decide for any other reason. I still haven't bought my ventilation because I'm stumped on whether the Miele Connectivity (or whatever it's called) is worth it. Have you thought about that? I also don't have wall space to put ovens anywhere other than under the cooktop and at first I regretted this so I'm glad to read some good reasons to do so here. Being under the ventilation is a great plus! My oven doors will open the conventional way, not to the side. I made sure to get the contour line swivel handles because I think these will be nicer to use despite the lower height. I've been loving using my induction hot plate in our temporary kitchen and can't wait to get to work on the big new one. Will post a review once I've had a chance to play around with it a bit.

Thank you cj47 - I will try Ceramabrite ASAP.

If it doesn't work, I am planning to call Miele, if only to be reassured that these etchings won't become cracks down the road.

I will repost with what I learn. We can't be the only two people who have spilled salt water on our cooktops!

By chance is this your first ceramic cook top? If so, you probably are not applying enough elbow grease (not downward pressure, you just keep rubbing until it's gone).

I have a different brand, have had it over a year and never have any spots didn't clean off, but some with more work than others. I've had ceramic cooktops for 20 years, and with regular electric, one learns how to really scrub those babies to get them spotless. Compared to them, those with induciton like to comment on how they seem to clean themselves, but it's really not quite that easy, just easy compared to dealing with baked on gunk from regular electric ceramic cooktops.

larsi - I love mine, too! Except for having to train myself not to leave even the corner of a dishtowel on the control panel or - whoops! - total shut down.

My cooktop is in a wooden island, which means the only place I can toss a hot pan straight from the oven is onto the cooktop surface, and I need every inch of space I can get. I'm getting better, though. I only hear those warning beeps occasionally. Now I wish I could train the DH and kids!

Does everyone start with the minus end and power down? It took me a day or two to figure that out - maybe I should have read the manual! Felt like a genius. Saved, oh, another second or two...

Thank you macybaby - this is all very encouraging.

Yes, I think you're right - this IS our first ceramic cooktop and we do stand back and admire the mirror-like shine that we didn't even have to scrub hard to get.

So, okay, I'll go scrub. Thank you!

Eugenie, did you know that when you start with the minus end, you can set your cooktop to heat up to a certain level? It's in the manual, and it's called "auto heat". IIRC the default setting from the factory is to hit the minus sign to activate it. You can also set your cooktop to come on at a certain level when the hob is turned on.
