I'm wearing a 'new to me' color that I really like. It's called Polyester Pink Creme, and is made by N.Y.C. It's super girly!

I'm wearing OPI Dutch Tulips, too! :-) It is probably my favorite (although I break out the Tropical Punch in the heat of summer).

Crinums, hymenocallis, amarcrinum, lycoris, habranthus and zephyranthes - all members of the Amaryllis tribe that are perfectly suited to growing in your zone. They're not always available from basic bulb sources, but are easy to find via ebay and a few other sources, including Plant Delights and Yuccado Nurseries, both of which have very informative websites. Lots of info on these plants online if you just google them. They are sturdy, dependable, and flourish in the heat. You might also investigate hedychiums, ginger relatives with big, colorful spikes of flowers blooming right now, as well as some of the South African bulbs such as the Eucomis, or pineapple lilies. I already mentioned this in another response, but "Garden Bulbs for the South" by Scott Ogden is a great reference for gardeners in warmer zones looking for year-round bloom.

Hi Straw & everyone. I'm soaking bluebonnet seed now to plant over the next few days. Already planted larkspur, coreopsis, poppies, winecup, oxe eye daisy, tahoka daisy & horsemint. Also a wildflower mix. The seed from Wildseed is really good--very good germination, very clean. The winecups started sprouting in 3 days! We scored a pickup load of horse manure from a close source for free! It's from a couple of Percherons & a Paso. The guy was rightfully proud of his poop--his hosses are alfalfa fed so no weed seed. Got it all spread except for a few buckets reserved to lightly cover the new seeds. I like how manure has a spongy water-retentive quality--great for seedlings when it's used as a fine covering. Gradually moving band babies into 2 gallons & into more sun for the fall & winter. The ones in the ground since last spring are wonderful--have some beautiful Sunsprite, Baronne Prevost, Mrs. B.R. Cant, Maman Cochet blooms. I can't get the chlorosis out of Iceberg & a few others--all older plants in the ground. Gave them a shot of Ironite that was left over, & some sulfur earlier. I have some gypsum & have added the horse manure around them--will keep working at it. Haven't done a specific soil test of the area but the general characteristic of soils (& I'm being generous, calling them 'soils') here is very alkaline. Lots of caliche with thin to no covering dirt. Alkaline hard aquifer water. Finally, I got Talisman grafted on Ragged Robin! Love Talisman's flowers but it's a middlin' plant for me. Fooled around trying to bud some & was shocked to find a bud pushing new growth. Now I'll try to root the Ragged Robin cane with the Talisman bud before it's too cool. Oh, & I need to plant a "dryland ground cover mix" I ordered from Peaceful Valley last year. It's got nitrogen fixing Palestinian clover & some other seed. I want to sow it around the roses & under each of my Dad's fruit trees & along a strip I'm trying to develop for a garden (have some 'taters & carrots started there to bust up the ground). There is a stand of clover under a big tooth maple tree here & it grows well each winter. I hope to get the seed spread the next few days & then hope for some rain.

Oh yes, it is red clay. Rock hard, concrete-like red clay to be exact. When I first started the garden 3 years ago, I tilled down about 12 inches into the clay (took several days)and added some pine bark fines (soil conditioner) and a lot of compost to try and fluff up the soil some. But when you consider in planting deep, there was only a couple of inches of "soft soil" under the plants. Believe me when I way it sounds easier than it was. But it was worth it. Now the worms have taken over and helped to aerate the soil and it is not too bad now. One good thing about clay though is that it holds water and nutrients very well. You have to keep a good layer of mulch to keep the top layer from crusting though. On the reverse, compaction can be a big problem, which is why my planting beds are mounded so that I don't walk in them. Maybe one year I can talk the wife into letting me make some good raised beds. jj

You folks in the Polar Vortex have my sympathies. Most Italians have no idea of what actual cold is anyway, but your current temperatures are fierce even by U.S. standards. Here we enjoyed the full day of snow we got yesterday, and are hoping for the coming night and day of rain the forecast has predicted. I have high hopes that the fall- and winter-long drought may finally break and we return to a more normal wet chilly winter. Up until now it has been alarmingly dry. Temperatures have been chilly, and last night we had a freeze in the mid-low twenties, but nothing anyone in the central or northern U.S. would call serious cold, for which I'm thankful. Current temperatures are mostly in the thirties, but two days ago I was working outdoors in the sun and it was comfortably cool, I think in the fifties. All is going well. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for rain.

I'm wearing OPI You Rock-Apulco Red on by toes and fingers. It is my colour for the summer. BTW I found MAC Lipstick which matches really well - POWERHOUSE.

My first pedicure ever and the girl snipped downward on the sides of my toes.I asked how long she'd been doing this and she said 4 years so I thought she knew what she was doing. NOW,pain and throbbing of an ingrown toenail.What would you do?

I'm also wearing OPI Rockapulco red, I love it thanks for the info on the lipstick. This is the year I'll be pulling out the bright reds and orangy reds. I find OPI to be the best and to seal the color I have my manicurist use a top coat of Nail Tec, it's a nail hardener and it helps to keep polish on longer.

Well I am not sure what I would do. I used to cut mine straight across as I was always told to do. But they curled in the corners and really hurt. Now the girl who does my pedicure every 8 weeks or so and has been for about five years, cuts the corners out and I have no problems. If you think she caused this, I would go back to the shop and talk to them. Show her your nails. Then I would go to you doctor. Maybe you could get some antibiotic medication.

OPI "Polar Bare." I also wear Salley Hansen Beyond Perfect "Soothing Spice." Both are soft muted colors.

Bronze, it's my favorite nail color. I forget the brand, I'll have to look.

I've always cut my nails rounded (cut corners) since I was old enough to do it. If I don't cut my toenail corners, they become embedded (grow downward into the skin) and that annoys me a lot.

Real Red. A bit brighter than I usually do. My daughter wanted me to have red toes. The pedicurist did a crappy job, though, and I can hardly wait to take it off! I should go in and complain to the owner but doubt I'll bother. I'll just choose a different girl next time. He has many, this one was new.
