Absinthe

Has anyone tried real absinthe? Is it worth the trouble of trying to get ahold of a bottle? What brand is the best?

Absinthe has been illegal for many years. It causes brain damage. Try Pernod or something legal. There are several good subsitutes. Read the link below for more info. -- Marie

It doesn't cause brain damage any more than drinking large quantities of any other strong liquor does. And it may be illegal in the US but not in many European countries. Actually one can legally purchase a bottle from these countries for personal consumption which is why I am asking for recommendations.

I'm not sure if wormwood has allelopathy issues. It's possible but I don't know either way. Try googling and see if you get some info on that. Use the botanical name in your searches. It will cut out some of the noise you'll have to sift through. I do know that some of the other echinacea are slower to get started than E. purpurea. From my own experience E. paradoxa, E. tennesseensis, and E. angustifolia are all slower to get going after transplanting and just slower growers in general than E. purpurea. I've had the E. tennesseensis about 5 years and I bought it as a plant. It wasn't until last year that it really took off with a lot of blooms. As far as wormwood, if it is as hardy as mugwort (A. vulgaris), dig it up and move it. You won't kill it. ;) FataMorgana

I have always thought that whites were a waste of space too until I grew White Queen last year. I was wildly impressed with the flavor, size of the tomatoes and prolific nature of the 2 plants I planted. I wish I took pictures because they were just fabulous tomatoes - really, in every way. I am looking forward to seeing what I get this year with them. So don't write off all whites... I've not grown Absinthe, although Trudi said they were good and I trust her opinion, but I have grown Cherokee Green, and they were fabulous. It's a keeper in my garden.

I've eaten horse, during the PBB scandal when all the cattle were poisoned and dropping over from PBBs in the cattle feed. LindaC, I bought Pocky at my local Meijer's and sent it to dishesdone, they had a chocolate and a strawberry version. Ashley says she's gotten it at WalMart right next to the college, it's a cookie shaped long and thin, not as big around as a pencil and dipped in chocolate or strawberry fudge. I have eaten crocodile AND alligator, and black pudding which Grandma used to call blood sausage. Nettle tea tastes icky and "green" but is supposed to be a diuretic and make your hair shiny, I can't figure out what the heck those two things have to do with each other, but I've tasted it because it's also supposed to be helpful for anemia. I didn't see that it helped. I had chicken tiki masala at a restaurant in Ann Arbor with Elery. It was basically a chicken dish with a curry kind of sauce over rice. Eh. I'm not a huge fan of curry. Paneer? Elery likes cheese. A lot. So we tried this, it kind of reminded me of the homemade yogurt cheese I make by putting yogurt in a strainer and letting it drain for several hours. Criollo chocolate is just a variety of cocoa bean. It's expensive and I found it to be very mild, I wasn't all that impressed with THAT either. I think I bought it at Fresh Market, and everything there is expensive so maybe that's just why it cost more. Tom Yum is just soup. I have a few heirlooms not on your list. Hawaiian Sweet Red Current, Ponderosa Pink, Hometead, Roma, Rutgers, Jubilee Golden & Marglobe. Of which I could trade 30 seeds of each for your Blackcherry, Red Brandywine, Gold Medal, and Amana Orange. I would like about the same in seeds, or I could trade 50+ seeds of each, if this is to your liking. I have some yellow pear also, but can't say these are heirloom, but are of a good taste nonetheless. Kris Northern VA.....I don't have a page yet...sorry, maybe in a week or so, just started again after years of not looking in seed exchange. Pic Jubilee Golden, Marglobe...Hope they go thru?

I don't think you want to be drinking any quantities of Absinthe. Thujone is a cumulative poison. One drink won't hurt your nor will two. But if it is drank regular then you will develop fits and such. I think the author from New Orleans is a bit underinformed.

Yes, I've had it, many years ago.

Didn't much care for it. The taste was, to me, not at all pleasant.

I think it's still illegal in France, isn't it?

Absinthe has the same effects as marijuana... But, it is a completely different high. Try making your own absinthe and see it firsthand.

Was in Japan from 64-66 and Absinthe was available and I presume legal. The bottle was "Morozoff 68" and Morozoff was a brand name for many odd liquors/liquers over there. The stuff tasted like concentrated Ouzo and was definitely bad news; I know more than a couple of guys who had to be de-toxed because of it.

I have bought it online, and would again, but it's so expensive, with the exchange rate and all. The thujone is regulated, so there are no toxic problems. What gets ya is that it's 140 proof. The link below is the stuff we bought.
