Some Questions: Shower Recessed Light, whole 'Kit' ?

Hello,

I am usually on the Decorating Forum but I have some specific questions regarding Wet Location lighting so I am hoping someone here can guide me in the right direction.

We are doing a very budget renovation of our teeny, tiny Master Bathroom that was an after-thought of the previous homeowners.

When we purchased the house over 25 years ago, and wanting to do some little renovations we soon found out that everything done in this home by the P.O.'s was very make-shift.

Example: Broom handle nailed to a header over a window to make up the space difference.

And that was just the beginning of the surprises we've found over the years.

The very last room still yet to have any upgrades will be this M. Bath in our bedroom and from what we can tell it was originally a 5' x 8' closet.

From door frame to back wall the bathroom is/was 5' deep.

End to end, including the 3' x 4.5' shower stall in one end, is 8'.

We have already DIY expanded the bathroom by 23 inches from door frame to back wall.

We've purchased the Toto Toilet, the fixtures, the vanity/sink, the tile and last weekend hubby put in a new, larger window.

We are overly-ready to dig in.

One, well, two little problems----both I can inquire about here on this forum (I think?) but I'll start with the wet location lighting.

With the extra space, we are going to turn our cubby-hold shower stall into something where we can actually move our arms to wash our bodies. LOL

I'm having some physical problems and hubby wants to add a tiled seat in the corner of the new shower area (the shaving legs thing is becoming more difficult) and a canned light in the ceiling directly above the tiled seat.

Now, if you've been patient enough to stick with me this long, here is our problem.

We have looked high and low for a "Kit"-- The recessed light 'can' to go into the attic crawl space and the accompanying trim, glass, seal, the works.

Why are we only finding 'Recessed Lighting for Wet Location Trim'

Operative word: Trim.

As in, the recessed shower light only comes with a trim?

What about the rest of it?

As my husband would say "Where are the guts?" LOL

Are there no complete kits anymore?

I remember when we re-did our little kitchen he bought 2 cans, trim and all (they came with the bulbs, even!) and installed them in the ceiling of old construction, just over my stove/range.

What happened to the all-in-one recessed light in a box?

Or, am I totally out of the ballpark here?

Can anyone direct me to what we will be needing to give us a light in the ceiling of the shower (preferably with a dark bronze/orb trim, not that I'm picky or anything like that. *grin*)

Thank you so very much for any advice, help, tips you can offer.

Most of the time, the recessed cans are sold separately from the trim.

Where that typically differs is with vapor-tight lights that are sold. Sometimes vapor-proofing is required where explosive gases (no, not toilet/husband related) as might be found in a shop or a laboratory might be ignited by an arc or spark.

If you go to Home Depot or Lowes, they sell cans. Various types. You'll want an air-tight can, one that's rated for insulation contact. You can buy the can size that you want and then get a trim ring to fit it, but typically you'll find a trim ring of a certain size and then buy the correctly sized can to fit the trim ring.

Shower trim kits sold at HD usually have a glass lens to contain the bulb, as well as a "sticky" rubber gasket that gets pinched between the trim ring and the can when the spring-loaded ring is snapped into place. Those are good enough for a shower, but they're typically not good enough for a steam room.

Vapor-tight for residential steam showers? Those lights have a gasket between the trim ring and the housing, and screws that hold them together to truly make it tight tight tight. They're usually quite a bit more expensive.

Realize that some cans are "remodel" and some are "new work". Remodel is if you're going to cut a round hole in the drywall and insert the can into the hole. New work is if you have the ceiling gutted and you can see the joists. You install the can, then hang the drywall, then cut the hole out so the can can pop through.

So, how to shop?

Go to a store and find a shower trim kit that you like. It'll be a certain size, 4", 5", or maybe 6".

Now find a can to fit it. Choose a new work or remodel can based upon the stage of your project. Make sure it's air tight and insulation contact rated.

Inside the can is a sticker that shows the maximum wattage for various types of bulbs that can be used in that can. Don;t exceed the wattage. If you do, the can could overheat. IC-rated cans have a thermal cutoff that will cut off power if the can temp gets too high.

Most cans are a standard depth. They make shorter cans for low-clearance situations too.

At HD, the can may run you $10. The "wet" trim kit may be $20-40.

Vapor-tight lights intended for steam rooms? They can be $75-$300.

Confused? I am!

This is a 6-year old thread! But for any readers in the present with a similar concern, the OP really raised two separate questions (perhaps without realizing it): 1) Using recessing lighting fixtures throughout the entire house (regardless of type of lamp used); 2) The type of lamp to be used throughout the house (regardless of the fixture in which it's used). First, recessed "downlights", even with flood lamps rather than spot lamps, is primarily intended for task lighting, not overall ambient lighting, and certainly not for "feature" lighting where the fixture and the glow of the lamp are the "feature" to attract the eye and create a pleasant emotion. Task lighting means lighting placed for a certain task: illuminating a counter top or island; illuminating the area adjacent to a door; illuminating art and wall hung/mounted objects (when the recessed lamp can be rotated and adjusted within certain angles). The only overall ambient lighting possible with a recessed fixture is indirect or "bounce" light, which is greatly reduced in usable lumens. In other words, recessed light fixtures are ideal when you want the light source to not be visible, but you want "something" specific to be illuminated. The best results for overall ambient and special feature lighting are from other types of fixtures--not recessed "task lighting" fixtures. In most situations, strong lighting design is a combination of the three types of fixtures: task lighting fixtures, ambient lighting fixtures and a very few, carefully chosen feature lighting fixtures. There are very few situations in a residence (or any other building) where only a single type of lighting fixture will be satisfactory for every type of lighting need. Second, as to the type of lamp, there are many line and low-voltage lamps (and associated lighting fixtures) to chose from. Each has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Like fixtures, there is no single lamp which is universally "best" for every lighting need. What all of this means is that for best lighting, one needs to study, become informed and choose wisely to get fixtures and lamps which best fit the various lighting needs throughout a house.

May times when someone wants to use ceiling fans, the recessed lighting is placed around the perimeter of the room. It can get tricky with the ceiling fans. I've seen where a fan was installed too close to the recessed cans and the flickering drove me nuts. If you want a quicker answer than waiting for the lighting book that you ordered, you may want to go to a lighting showroom and speak with someone there. They should be able to give you several suggestions. In the dining room, are you going to put a light kit on the fan to illuminate the table? If so, you won't need to have recessed cans close to it. The cans can be placed around the perimeter and you will be surprised at the amount of light that reflects back into the room. If the kitchen fan is going to be over the eat-in area, the same question applies. Will you have a light kit? With vaulted ceilings my main concern is where is the ceiling fan outlet going to be located. If it is not centered in the room, you are going to have to know the pitch so that you get the right fan and the right length of rod so that the blades don't hit anything.

It's commonplace for builders to charge a fortune for upgrades - they know when someone's spending $400,000 on a new house, it's easy to talk soon-to-be-homeowners into paying $900 extra for something that costs them only $300 and pocketing the rest, since they can just tack it onto the 30-year mortgage. If the builder won't give you a break on the Cree/Ecosmart lamps (make sure they know they're only $40 or $50 each, and don't require trim bezels), just go with the standard-fare Halo 6" (or 4") cans and incandescent lamps they give you, and buy the Cree lamps and install them yourself. Quite easy usually, after removing the floodlamp bulb and the trim kit they give you.

Thanks normclc Â from a really vague question youÂve read my mind and responded with extremely concise answers. The big-box stores are really pushing those "inferior quality 50par20-120volt lamp kits". A neighbor had these installed and I wasnÂt impressed. YouÂve explained to me why I wasnÂt impressed. IÂve been studying the lamp data on the junolightinggroup.com. Taking your comments and re-looking at the tables, watt for watt, the par30 is just brighter, little wider beam spread, and has a longer rated life. So the 4" line voltage cans using par20 are a poor choice compared to the 5" cans using par30. I only have 8Â ceilings so really big lamps (in a big 6" can) arenÂt required. Could you explain why you specÂd the low voltage mr for task lighting? IÂm putting recessed lights in a small 12Â x 12Â kitchen over the counter edge as task lighting. ThereÂs a pendant globe (100W) over the kitchen table for general lighting. The counters are 5Â from the ceiling. Using the guideline that 50-100 foot candles are required for the task of food preparation. The lower bound on foot candles for kids that can see, and the upper bound for old people that canÂt see. IÂm middle aged and canÂt see well Â went from "see fine" to "canÂt see squat" in low light in about 4 years. I was considering 5" 75par30 on dimmers. Downside, I think, is heat output (will be fine in Great White North in winter, no so good in summer) and cheaper (initial costs and dimmers), versus low-voltage which is somehow better light and cheaper over a long time. Am I missing something here? Aside, IÂve discovered that my joists are 7". (I would have thought they would be 8" trimmed down to 7 Â½, but no). The 5" Halo cans IÂm considering are 7" high and would be flush with the subfloor above. Given that youÂre supposed to be Â½" from joists, I assume that flush with the subfloor would be a no-no? The low-profile 5" cans donÂt come with the specular trims (which other posters think wonderful to cut glare), so maybe I get pushed to the MRs regardless.

OMG, I can't thank you enough for all your valuable information!
I hope we can do you proud when the little bathroom is finished and I can post some pictures of actual lighting in the shower (Actual light INside the shower... I won't have to wait so long between leg shaves due to the bad lighting in the bathroom! *g* )
